VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

Pretty sure Basic doesn't.

http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/features/whats-in-the-box/

Yes it does, it's required to use the Wii Remote, which is the main controller for anyone not using the tablet. I'm fairly certain the tablet has the Wii Remote parts in it too, but I'm not at home right now so I can't check. But the tablet does have pointer functionality so...

Depends on your country mate. Some basics do not.

Whoa, are you serious? What countries skimp out of the -required- sensor bar? I didn't even know you could buy them separately. (Besides shitty 3rd party ones)

That is true, I am still baffled that skyrim was only like 3.7 gigs on disc. But Look at games like uncharted 3 or MGS 4, those games are close to 50 gigs. I hope this is not going to be a standard.

Those in the know can correct me if I am wrong. But I was informed Uncharted used Sony's typical doubling of files to increase the snail like speed of the PS3 bluray reading.

Not sure about MGS4. Most likely a cutscene heavy game will push larger storage requirements. However the great thing about that is that more and more people seem to be going to ingame, game resource cut scenes with no movie files. Though MGS4 could have already done that.

One possibility is that it will work like Steam's offline mode. You can set offline mode and play offline, but you need to check with the server to get permission first.

OMG SONY PATENTED THIS SO OBVIOUSLY THEY PLAN TO IMPLEMENT IT

God.

You know, if PS4 randomly paused games and demanded I jump up, wave my arms around and yell "McDonalds" I'D PROBABLY BUY THE FUCK OUT OF THAT CONSOLE just for the hilarity.

This is not some marketing catch phrase, it's a documentation for devs. If it's mandatory to be online they would say so.

This part of the document is simply an overview (clue was in its title) written as MS promotion to devs. You can tell that just from its tone.

There is virtually bugger all in that overview thats technical that actually helps devs

A lot of PS3 games use redundant data to make up for the slow disk read speed of the Blu Ray Drive.

Sony have a patent on in-game ads: -

In fact, I read a rumour that the PS4 is going to feature them in games, so it must be true!

Correct. Then we can assume that technically the entire front page is just flack and Kinect is maybe not required...as its just an overview right? Because if something doesn't mention required and yet is, than surely something that makes a point to say REQUIRED doesn't mean it is.

How the fuck is kinect being included and required any different from having your Wii U sensor bar plugged in, or the PS4 and its included camera bar, which is required for tracking the new dual shock?

The Wii U sensor bar is in no way required to use the console. I'd also be willing to bet the same thing regarding the PS4. The Move functionality in the new Dual Shock is only going to be used in certain instances where a game is programmed to use it.

Man it's going to be glorious to come back to this thread and quote everyone who declares they're going to buy MS' next system when they unveil it.

That is true, I am still baffled that skyrim was only like 3.7 gigs on disc. But Look at games like uncharted 3 or MGS 4, those games are close to 50 gigs. I hope this is not going to be a standard.

Skyrim also has some ridiculously low resolution textures and repeats them even more than most games. Ridiculously aggressive compression also plays a factor.

Also adding in both MGS4 and UC3 use much higher quality audio and multiple tracks.

Mandatory, always online (aka, no offline mode) has been a persistent rumour for the Durango. The wording in this help file, while potentially ambiguous, seems to confirm it.

It's not "ambiguous", it's a completely different context. You can't take wording clearly describing an background connectivity approach (ala WiiConnect24 or what we've seen with the PS4) and extrapolate that to prove the existence of always online DRM.

This thread is making my head hurt.

You know, if PS4 randomly paused games and demanded I jump up, wave my arms around and yell "McDonalds" I'D PROBABLY BUY THE FUCK OUT OF THAT CONSOLE just for the hilarity.

I could see that happen, you just beat a giant boss and hard boss, then bam ad for McDonald and it require you to sing "Dada da daaa, I'm lovin it"

The always online part doesn't bother me, but if Kinect is *required* for anything I will be extremely annoyed.

This is basically how I feel. I don't mind Kinect when I feel like fighting it, but I don't want to use it for the UI and I better be able to play games even if it can't identify me. I don't care about having it plugged in though

So you need online in order to play your games offline. How does this make any sense whatsoever?

It seems whoever has been put in place to create this box is banking on initial success down to thinking a lot of current Gold subscribers will just buy it anyway because its Xbox with your achievements and all that stuff, then hoping to entice the casual crowd with the Kinect stuff.

I like Xbox but the more I read about this system the more I feel underwhelmed by it. An official announcement with games shown off can't come soon enough.

So they really were on the money? Damn talk about gambling a reputation.

They could yet be wrong. The only thing for sure is. MS likely wants to do most of the these things. What platform holder would not.

It's a business, all of the rumoured features makes sound business sense.

How is the opening line from the Edge article ambiguous?

EDGE said:
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function

Add that to the "will always maintain an internet connection" and "Always On, Always Connected" lines from the XDK, and it seems to confirm the Edge (and others) rumours about mandatory online for the console to work.

Yup. We don't know enough about either console's operation. There's nothing to rule out the very likely possibility that these could employ the same online/DRM/background connectivity properties, or heaven forbid the PS4 be more restrictive.

My guess is that they'll end up being very close with publishers wanting as much parity as possible.

Edge are probably the only media outlet I'd believe if they published a rumour.

Yea but I'm surprised because EDGE usually don't come out swinging with rumors. They are pretty nonchalant/quiet about it.

SOOOO I guess it would make sense for what they said to be true since EDGE is usually one of the more reserved sites.

That is insane. What the fuck, Nintendo? The sensor bar is necessary to use the pointing functionality in their main controller! How the fuck can they leave it out of the basic bundle!? I am blown away. Why does the Basic bundle even exist.

The main controller is the gamepad. They probably figured if you have wiimotes or wii games you will have a sensor bar... Or will pony up for premium.

But yeah, Nintendo and PAL? Yeah they do some funny things.

I hope the install thing is so I don't have to have a disc in. I just want to wake up in the morning and say
'Xbox On'
'Play Fallout 4'
'pause game'
'Play Witcher 3'

Please don't make me have a Kinect.

Lol perfect gif. Exactly what MS is going to do. Kinect sucks. I'd bet Kinect 2.0 and its games will be just as bad. Kinect as an option is fine. Not cramming it down everyone's throats and designing your system's UI around it.. Same for Sony if they went this route with PS4.

To be fair, it doesn't come with a Wii Remote, and the Gamepad does *not* and cannot use it. It probably should come with a bar+Wii Remote though.
