Top-level COD competitions look like what we expect

Well you obviously cant read because I never said that nor did I even remotely imply that at all. The target audience for this is what you are looking at in a video.

You kind of implied it. When you said look at this PC group playing, and now look at how civilized they are.

These guys are all a bunch of dude bro gamers so i'm not really surprised.

But yeah this make us look bad, and if some anti video games dude watch this you can be sure he will use it against us and seriously not much we can do I mean look a them they all look like a bunch of angry teenagers ready to kill someone .

Man i really hope this is sarcasm.

There's a standard to hold, absolutely.

This is a video game tournament with sponsors and money on the line. A little more self control would be nice.

Again, why should this behavior be vilified when we mute the same type of player online?

The spectacle of this serious sport we call video games (lol) doesn't mean we should be put through having to tolerate that kind of behavior.

It's not ok and if athletes have a moral obligation to their audience then why shouldn't these serious athletes playing games?
Behavior like this is one of the factors why Professional Gaming is not respected.

I've seen a lot of esport finals and competition (primary SC2, LoL, Dota2). Never have I seen such bad behavior. It still is not the way to behave and to promote your sport/team.

Exactly. "Well this is how sports, and esports, are." No, it absolutely is not. I saw someone mentioning Wayne Rooney -- he doesn't mock and throw stuff at players after he wins a match. I used to play in Counter-Strike LAN tournaments, in my opinion the grossest gaming community, and I never saw anyone act like this. If you had disparaged another player like that you would have been banned from the tournament.

You are completely wrong I dont see how that comment says that "playing a console turns him into an idiot" at all.

Thats exactly right people still get ejected for this behavior.

Cringe worthy as it is, the rampant trash talk/swearing is endemic on any competitive sport. The violent buffoonery is just accessory to the game they're playing.

I don't think you can compare a sport where people are actually making contact with each other and trying to physically better each other to people sitting in chairs shooting fake bullets at each other.

This is more like a bunch of people cussing each other out at a chess or poker tournament.

Chess and Poker have managed to cultivate more dignified environments where trash talk is not acceptable so I'm not sure the comparison is apt. Sure esports may not be as physically demanding as any real sport, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're less strenuous or mean any less to these players because of it. And really that's what it comes down to, when you consider the emotional investment that goes into playing something competitively, you're bound to hear trash talk or have instances of bad sportsmanship( if it's allowed ) when emotions ride high; it's human nature .

As was mentioned a few posts back, this is something that you notice in these types of games. I, alongside others, have watched plenty of competitive online which doesn't quite get this bad.

Sure, in the history of mankind someone on every game has had an infantile fit. In these types of games (shooters) you tend to see it bring out a long of immaturity that is worrying to see how that shapes or affects these people.

It's more on the psychology side of things but it's very worrying. I brought up phones for a reason earlier. You know how many times I've gone out and seen 2-4 friends hanging out with their heads buried in their phones hardly talking? I lost count.

It may not seem like an issue now but I would argue that if this trend continues with aggressive behavior in games and phones for teens then I worry about the state of things come 10-30 years from now.

Awful. Felt like punching a few of them. Swearing is one thing, but some of them just took it too far. There's no class, sportsmanship or etiquette there what-so-ever.

Let's just slow down before this devolves into a carnival of stupid.

If you mean to tell me that you have NEVER EVER raged at any game you've played (offline or online) before, then i'm calling BS.

With that in mind, most of you have probably raged while gaming....in the comfort of your own home, probably in party chat. Where only your friends can hear you.

There's almost no excusing what is shown in the video, especially on a public, near global stage, from supposedly "pro" players. i'm sure we all agree on that. Many of you probably watch Starcraft and LoL and see how those players conduct themselves in competitive environments.

However, some of the elitism and hypocrisy being shown in this thread already is baffling. Unless of course you are a saint and/ or have the patience of one.

At the end of the match they shook hands.

Get a bunch of guys together in a room where they know they're being filmed and they're at a high level of competition and you get things like this. It's not THAT surprising, even if it is a little jarring and maybe disappointing.

The true travesty is of course that there are no women on either team.

I wonder why.

Yes but what happens in Pro league sports when stuff like this would go down? Suspensions? Fines?

Yes. And you don't think if this was more widespread that some of those players (if) would lose their sponsors or something?

A competition is only as good as the venue and the people putting it together. If this was accepted, then the blame lies on the producers. These are kids, I'm 37 and still toss a controller now and then with some words I'm not proud of.

I've seen a lot of esport finals and competition (primary SC2, LoL, Dota2). Never have I seen such bad behavior. It still is not the way to behave and to promote your sport/team.

No, it's not. Which is why I blame it on bad grooming. But this shit happens in all of those, I've seen videos of kids yelling and screaming in WoW and SC tournaments.

I think its more funny than sad, so I agree. Not sure why people are acting so shocked and losing faith in humanity etc.

Exactly, I mean ... these still are kids. And they still need guidance by their sponsors and the producers. If the producers came over and said "hey, watch the language, this is live" I'm sure it would have stopped right there.

Except if you go online and play people talk like this regularly. Lets not sit here and pretend like its a select few people that have this level of maturity. I don't even plug in my headphones anymore unless I'm getting in a private chat because of how rampant this behavior gets.

I'm not pretending anything. I also think that a majority of online (PC, PS3, 360) are all shit, certain games attract certain crowds, but it's not indicative of the entire scene. But with this situation you can't say "all COD players are cussing bro's" because this behavior is completely in control of the producers.

Shit on TV doesn't happen unless they want it to happen.

While I can't discount the behavior of the players, this is something that comes down to personal accountability, I can't help but thinking there was a producer in the ear of these kids so they could make some "good TV".

Any (most) games that are competitive brings this out of people, this is not exclusive nor more prominent in shooters.

No not really, but would you mind to explain to me how can this not be used as an argument against gamers being dangerous and all that media are talking about lately ?

I'm not sure if that was his claim so I won't touch on that point.

This behavior can alter young kids or teens that are just starting to shape themselves for the rest of their life. You don't think being aggressive in games may seep into other aspects of their life? Of course it can. It's not going to be 100% of people who play this type of game but the chances of this happening are higher in this kind of game environment.

To see this in a sponsored tournament is embarrassing and only glorifies that behavior as it's just tolerated.

I've seen rap battles that don't get quite that rambunctious.

Meh, I'm not a fan of it but it's unfortunately part of the LAN game. When I was a competitive Halo player this was just part of it. It's a good way to pump yourself and your team up and get in the head of your opponent. It's a good tactic and it really does work. It's purely an in-game thing, nobody takes it personally, they are probably all friends.

It is however pretty fucking ridiculous.

I'm not arguing that. I am saying that in these types of genres, shooters, it brings out this kind of behavior more. I'm not just trying to fabricate it, I've experienced it online and mute everyone for that very reason.

You are completely wrong I dont see how that comment says that "playing a console turns him into an idiot" at all.

I'm not wrong. I'm just saying that your statement implied PC Elitist. At least that is the impression that the majority of responders got from your statement. However, when you were questioned you explained what you meant by your statement. And I completely agree with your follow up explanation, "that the venue dictates the behavior" (paraphrased).

Yes they are less strenuous. Saying that they aren't makes me think that you've never actually played a sport. Having someone push you to the ground every other minute or constantly putting their hands in your face and causing you physical harm is
undoubtedly more stressful then sitting in a chair and someone shooting virtual bullets at you.

And again, I'm sure professional chess players are extremely invested in big money
tournaments, but that doesn't mean when
the lose they flip the table over and act like a dick.

And as other people have said, when professional athletes lose their shit this bad
they're held accountable, either through suspension or a fine. There's a difference between a little shit talking and getting so
angry that you literally can't form words correctly. These people are just acting like assholes.

Retards playing retarded games act like retards.

News at eleven.

Duh.

...

Well, I didn't know what I was supposed to expect. Makes sense that a sport where you do not really expend your energy, it will find a different venting mechanism. Because the tensions run as high as ever.

The fact that you took it as an elitism statement is more of a you issue than his own. I'm not going to say more than that because this isn't about you so I suggest you don't look into my words more than that.

I also agree with his explanations and have echoed some of the same points.

No not really, but would you mind to explain to me how can this not be used as an argument against gamers being dangerous and all that media are talking about lately ?

That's simple. I've seen professional NBA players chase people in the crowd during a bench clearing. I've seen baseball players charge the mound and attack the pitcher. I've heard football players (and admitted) to grabbing and trying to break fingers and punch balls.

In fact, some football players have murdered people. I guess this makes Football, Basketball, and Baseball all dangerous and probably should have a ban on them.

I'm not arguing that. I am saying that in these types of genres, shooters, it brings out this kind of behavior more. I'm not just trying to fabricate it, I've experienced it online and mute everyone for that very reason.

The single most vile and disgusting competitive scene for a video game I've ever seen is WoW. Arena brought out the worst in people. I played CS and Unreal back in the day, Quake too, plus CoD and Halo and others, played online for a long time but WoW was easily the worst, far more than any shooter I frequented.

I hate to throw a broad generalization in, but I think 'society' in general is less respectful so this isn't necessarily the game itself that causes this, but the people that have access to it.

None of what I said implied that he would turn into an idiot for playing a console

"Coming from a Pro PC gamer this is what happens when you support home consoles in the competitive scene. And its totally what they deserve."

Yeah man playing on my console turns me into a fucking idiot. Please save me.

However, some of the elitism and hypocrisy being shown in this thread already is baffling. Unless of course you are a saint and/ or have the patience of one.

You could fit an entire galaxy inbetween saying ''damnit'' when an opponent scores in Fifa and this.

I had to stop halfway through when it got particularly heated. Absolutely excruciating stuff; I feel embarrassed for them. Especially the chavvy ginger grub.

You could fit an entire galaxy inbetween saying ''damnit'' when an opponent scores in Fifa and this.

I got jumped by the opposing team while playing basketball once because the trash talk got too out of hand... and I'm the nicest most reasonable person you'll ever meet.

I'll keep my mental image of the stony faces and intense, silent concentration of two Korean StarCraft pros going at it, thank you very much.

Any (most) games that are competitive brings this out of people, this is not exclusive nor more prominent in shooters.
In the esports scene, which is what this thread is about, that's just plain untrue. I've watched dozens of professional RTS tournaments (and even some PC FPS ones) and I've never seen any behaviour even remotely close to this.

Sure, obviously not every COD player acts like this. I never said they did. But its also not so rare that we should pretend like this is just some smart editing job done by Eurogamer. And if a league actually wants to be taken seriously then they need to make sure their competitors don't act like total asshole trolls.

No one is going to take professional gaming seriously if there are people that constantly act like the people that we go out of our way to mute online. I don't want to watch a bunch of unlikable douchbags try to act like they're tough. I want to watch quality competitive gameplay.

If I was sitting and watching a stream of
COD players and a match started with a team like this acting the way they are I'd just turn it off. I go out of my way to avoid these people online, so why the hell would I subject myself to a bunch of assholes getting so mad that they will yell unintelligible words at each other?

Top level NBA players, it's exactly what you expect:

I completely agree. The problem lies with the presentation, it could have easily been done tasteful and if you're kicked out of a comp for being a douche, I'm sure you won't be the next time. Although the NBA video I linked surely doesn't prove my point, haha!

What a bunch of sub human meatheads.

I watch a lot of pro Starcraft 2 and if you tried to do stuff even 1/4 as bad as this you would be banned from the tournament (and likely others) and ripped into by the community!

I have also watched some pro Shootmania, CS:GO, DOTA2 and LOL and have never seen anything like this.

It's not so much that the vitriol was a turnoff, but that was some SHITTY trash talk. It's all just rage and intimidation.

Take a look at how baseball players trash talk, at least use some clever ideas. Or watch how football players get in each others heads.

If you are going to talk shit, do it right.
