Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft Announced || F2P, Card Game, Murloc Action Included

I guess it depends on how dependent this is on shelling out money but I'm just skeptical of the whole F2P genre, as most of them are little more than excuses for companies to get players to "monetize" their gaming experiences as much as possible.

I want to say this was rumored a couple years ago but I can't for the life me find that.

I really wonder if this will be PC only or for mobile & tablets. Seems like this would be perfect for an iPad.

they already confirmed an iPad release.

anyhow i really do want to try this out... i'm a sucker for CCG and this one seems fun... also they are applying the right business model to it:

- card packs $1
- you can also win card packs playing online against other players
- one of the modes that grants you card packs is a booster duel, so no unfair advantage
- you can convert cards you do not want into cards you want.

WotC should take notes.

I wonder how complex this will get though. The screenshots don't really give much in the way of anything complex.

Kind of but I remember reading an elaboration a while ago about how they were looking at getting away from the physical card game and taking that to something digital because they'd have more control that way.

There's a lot about the WOWTCG card game (which I have played for years) that doesn't translate well into the kind of experience they are looking to deliver here. It's clear that they used the existing card game as a base for the ruleset and design (class-based decks, some of the keywords are the same, etc.) but being digital means they aren't slaved to questionable decisions that the card game makers might make in the future/have already made.

This looks really good. Even though I don't actively play WoW anymore (where's my F2P option?), I still enjoy the universe. I'm also an avid boardgamer and card gamer. So yeah, I'm on board for sure.

There will always be plenty of Blizzard haters and this just gives them more fuel... they're just wasting their breath and beating their chest though as usual.

Sony Online had the same idea with their Legends of Norrath digital card game. It generated some interest and I'm sure some revenue for SOE. But it went largely ignored and the players didn't care for it.

I'm guessing there'll be even less interest shown in this by the bnet community.

The best part about this is that Blizzard is using the WarCraft universe for something else besides World of WarCraft. I've played every expansion, some more than others and while it's great to be playing "alongside" some of the great characters of the WarCraft universe, I still want to see the universe explored in other ways as well.

Does anyone else think its weird that this isnt a phone game? Desktop only with iPad to come later is a bad choice for a f2p card game

Free (read no gambling with real money) Poker is a favorite past time of many people. Trying to make an accessible strategy card game will have a sizeable audience especially if you can play it at work.

This and the computer assisted build your deck tool convinces me this will gain traction and won't be a failure.

I assume there's nothing of this complexity?

Maybe not even half of that. I don't know if they'll even reach DOTP levels of complexity (which isn't that much). Forge mode might save it since it prevents the constructed deck metagame from going batshit crazy.

That's complicated? Pffft.

oh come one, that's not complicated either!

Whenever a player plays a spell that counters a spell that has been played or a player plays a spell that comes into play with counters, that player may counter the next spell played or put an additional counter on a permanent that has already been played, but not countered.

Complexity of TCGs shouldn't be judged by card text. MTG has cards with literally a sentence of text that are incredible powerhouses. These games all about card interactions and turn/phase dynamics. WOWTCG's attack phase, for example, is dramatically different than MTG's, and as a result the entire game/metagame focuses on different strengths.

No matter what TCG you play, the games always distill into card economy and looking to trade one of your cards for more than one of their cards. How you get there is just flavor.

Wait, is this based on the TCG or not?

Clearly inspired by it.

Well, I for one won't say no to a well-made card game. There aren't a lot of them nowadays.

Whatever happened to Notch's Scrolls by the way? I've never heard anything of it again after the Betheshda lawsuit.

I think this would be way cooler if I could play it inside of WoW, like challenge people to card games instead of normal PVP.

Then WoW could be both Pokemon AND Yugioh.

Combining Rakdos with this guy is a fun example, especially against any low health decks.

But yes, you can get good depth without long text.

Unless Rakdos makes you sac it, then it's a nonbo.

Also Ambiguity isn't a real card, it's from their joke set.

I was almost excited but then it was an Unhinged card! Damn you!

Also Shahrazad isn't that complicated, nor are many of the older cards if you read their updated rules texts which they started standardized a while back.

I wonder how much grinding we'll have to do in Hearthstone...

As it's free-to-play I'll probably check it out. Not that I dig card games, at all...

i love this dude... it's perfect to destroy pretty much the whole Odric deck or goblin deck in Duels 2013

I loved Grindstone card, my brother practically built a deck that defeated enemy player just putting his whole deck to graveyard.

There was also some other card we used, but i dont remember them now, it was so many years ago.
