New 3DS update out

It black screened while updating, said "an error has occurred," told me to restart the system, and now that I did trying to pull up the settings screen or the eshop gives me "an error has occurred. please save your data in any software currently in use, then restart the system." restarting, removing the SD card, etc. seems to result in the same thing.
Ugh same thing happened to me... sigh.

So what exactly are the changes? I would like a list please and thank you.

EDIT: Just seen this:

Thanks StreetsAhead.

Can someone explain what the 2nd point means?

If wii is to be used as an example, patch possible hacking exploits before they happen.

Edit. I swear you said 3rd when I read that lol.

I just bought an XL on sunday and so far Super Mario 3D Land crashes randomly as well as luigi's mansion. I hope this fixes the crashes...but I'm not counting on it. Should I call Nintendo for a replacement?

Woot, just got a 3DS XL today.

Funny how we are already on version 5, when the system isn't even two years old in the US until Wednesday.

I hope the shop goes up in 10 minutes, it was supposed to be up an hour ago. I want to see if there are any changes

Yup, corrupted firmware is usually fatal.

It was that to do "Download Later", you'd have to close the eShop app and then put the system to sleep. You just don't have to do the former anymore, it seems. At least that's what I think it's talking about.

I've never had it crash during gameplay. Can you describe what happened? The only time the system crashed on me is when I've loaded the internet browser while in an application, but that only happened periodically and the issue seems to have been fixed in an update.

I had a similar thing, no black screen, just a small message saying that it could not update due to an error. Everythings seems fine.

I've confirmed it is indeed the case:

(This is from my Style Savvy update download)

Yea, just realized this. Well it isn't clear if you have to press Download Later, but it is clear you don't have to close the eShop now.

Awesome.

I'm not doing anything in particular. Just doing the levels in 3D Land and it'll freeze for about 5 seconds then boot me out to the Home Screen. An error message with no error code pops up and says: "An unexpected error has occured. Your system will now restart. Any progress may be lost". Happens in Luigi's Mansion ONLY when I beat a mission.

Sounds like a problem with the system. I'd give them a call.

What? did you fix it? now I'm scared to update my GF 3DS, mine had no problem at all.

Good. It was never clear that you had to exit the eShop for download later to work. When I first got my 3DS (a few weeks ago) I loaded up on demos and put the thing to sleep for the night. The next day it had done nothing. Only Google told me what I did wrong. Thanks for fixing that minor inconvenience.

System error when I tried to update.

This just happened to me too. 3DS XL purchased about two months ago.
Are you guys all on XLs? I'm kinda worried about updating with this many people having issues already. :(

I'm not touching it until this error stuff is worked out.

Maybe post more info about your 3DS's? Are they an XL? When did you purchase it? And some other stuff that could be related.

I had a small error the first time I tried to download, but everything worked fine after that. Launch NA XL.

I got an error the first time I tried to update, but after that it went smoothly. I'm on an XL if anyone is curious.

I wasn't on full battery power; closed Fire Emblem from suspend and plugged the 3DS into an AC adapter when the system update told me to.

EDIT: Stock SD card, system purchased from Best Buy.

No, mine is a OG 3DS and it was not a black screen error, just an Error using the OS to warn me (a little window pop up saying it could not update due to an error and asking me to restart). Now if you get a Black Screen like the other gaffers....

eShop seems faster. Boot time seems the same, but games lists load much faster, many actually load right away, so it seems they are preloading the main sections in the background.

The browser feels faster too.

Ugh firmware updates right after I buy some games. In this case, LM and MH3U.

Call me paranoid but I never take my chances on these. Unless it's a major update I can wait a month or so.

Is there anyway to find a common element in why your 3DSes are getting a black screen of death?

XL? Standard? Firmware you were upgrading from? Games/apps you had downloaded on the system? If it was running another game/app at the time of download?

I have a Zelda 3DS, and now I'm really scared if I have to send it away just as Monster Hunter and Luigi's Mansion come out.

Update probably unlocked the 8GB RAM.

Not following you. :/ Wouldn't Miiverse be a standalone native app, and be more like the eShop in that regard?

Even on the Wii U, Miiverse is basically a series of normal web pages the browser is pointed at, which is why they can update it without updating the app itself.

Do you guys have the default SD card or just a random one you bought (for extra space)?

Update went fine for me, using the default card. Took about 4 minutes, not plugged in or anything. Original 3DS.
