Ugh same thing happened to me... sigh.It black screened while updating, said "an error has occurred," told me to restart the system, and now that I did trying to pull up the settings screen or the eshop gives me "an error has occurred. please save your data in any software currently in use, then restart the system." restarting, removing the SD card, etc. seems to result in the same thing.
So what exactly are the changes? I would like a list please and thank you.
EDIT: Just seen this:
Thanks StreetsAhead.
Can someone explain what the 2nd point means?

If wii is to be used as an example, patch possible hacking exploits before they happen.

well that's uhh....worrisome.
I just bought an XL on sunday and so far Super Mario 3D Land crashes randomly as well as luigi's mansion. I hope this fixes the crashes...but I'm not counting on it. Should I call Nintendo for a replacement?
Finally. It was that to do "Download Later", you'd have to close the eShop software and then put the system to sleep. You just don't have to do the former anymore, it seems. At least that's what I think it's talking about.

I've never had it crash during gameplay. Can you describe what happened? The only time the system crashed on me is when I've loaded the internet browser while in an application, but that only happened periodically and the issue seems to have been fixed in an update.
I'm not doing anything in particular. Just doing the levels in 3D Land and it'll freeze for about 5 seconds then boot me out to the Home Screen. An error message with no error code pops up and says: "An unexpected error has occured. Your system will now restart. Any progress may be lost". Happens in Luigi's Mansion ONLY when I beat a mission.

What? did you fix it? now I'm scared to update my GF 3DS, mine had no problem at all.
Is it just me or is the browser waaaaay faster now?
well that's uhh....worrisome.
I just updated with no problems, I wonder why this is happening. This just happened to me too. 3DS XL purchased about two months ago.

Probably upgrading the browser to get it ready for Miiverse?
System error when I tried to update.

I had a similar thing, no black screen, just a small message saying that it could not update due to an error. Everythings seems fine.
Are you guys all on XLs? I'm kinda worried about updating with this many people having issues already. This just happened to me too. 3DS XL purchased about two months ago.
Maybe post more info about your 3DS's? Are they an XL? When did you purchase it? And some other stuff that could be related.

eShop seems faster. Boot time seems the same, but games lists load much faster, many actually load right away, so it seems they are preloading the main sections in the background.
The browser feels faster too.
Not following you. :/ Wouldn't Miiverse be a standalone native app, and be more like the eShop in that regard?
Do you guys have the default SD card or just a random one you bought (for extra space)?
