it means we will probably get more of this

Can't wait for Nintendo investors meeting, should be soon and *popcorn.gif* worthy
What's this game called? I've seen this before and I have no clue what the hell is going on.

3DS performs ok. But it could perform better if someone who knows what he is doing would actually run Nintendo.

aside from dropping the price of the hardware and software ($130 and $30-$35 respectively), i don't know what much else he could do. the final big franchises are hitting in america this year, and that's pretty much it as far as system-sellers outside japan.

Isn´t Iwata the guy who has the last word?

In a hierarchical sense, sure. However, failures in marketing outside of Japan rest solely upon the leaders of that region. The 3DS is doing very well in Japan, and decently elsewhere. They only cut their forecasts because Nintendo have taken to be ridiculous in their forecasts, always assuming it'll beat out the DS/Wii despite the fact they were anomalies.

Besides, come October, this won't be an issue. The first 3D Pokémon RPGs are out. So many people I know are interested in that game because it's what they've wanted since Red & Blue

Last time this company was in this amount of trouble a man named Sakaguchi saved them by creating Final Fantasy.

Bring him back and give him free hands on the next title.
Take the best creative people from both square and enix. Put them on this title.

Risk everything on this final move...and save the company.
What Sakaguchi giveth, Sakaguchi can taketh away...

FF ATB. It's a gasha game, you flail at the screen to earn credits and sloooooowly unlock new graphics to flail at (or just microtransact them)--it burned a lot of people who wanted an actual game and not Final Fantasy Slots.

More ios stuff incoming?
It makes me wonder if Eidos in general is kind of cursed now. They had to be saved by being bought by another company in the UK, and again they're failing to really perform well enough to justify keeping around it seems. It may well be that despite SE's staples generally not being big sellers outside of FF/KH/occasionally DQ outside of Japan they may nevertheless still be the more viable kind of games to create, even now. Or that's just being dumbly optimistic, but stuff like Ni No Kuni DID seem to do fairly well.
Man, I've got a really good feeling about the imminent future of the company.
They just need to cancel Lightning Returns to prove that they can do it.
Unless that game's got very, VERY troubled development that seems too idiotic of a move. It's bound to turn a modest profit and is likely mostly complete, may as well just get it out. I actually do expect it'll be a good game, even if the story itself is like witnessing a trainwreck AFTER it derailed and is rolling off a cliff into the sea.

Why hasn't Iwata gotten rid of them?

This is only good news if this new guy stops fucking around with ios/social crap and focuses the company's resources on the big guns. And for the love of god stop giving Toriyama big projects. For all we know he could just be Wada supercharged version.

Out of every single video game company, Square Enix was probably the biggest failure this gen. Imagine what the fuck they would be up to without Eidos. Baffling how they are struggling.

Actually no, the last time this company was in this much trouble was when a man name Sakaguchi decided to go all out and create a CGI movie which flopped every called Final Fantasy Spirit Within.

Hell the merger and Wada becoming CEO can be directly attributed to SW. Sakaguchi won't really save anyone at this point, I mean he can't even seem to be able to save Mistwalker.

Hopefully some positive changes come with this. I.e. No more Lightning and no more iPad/social gaming, which I think they said they'd be stopping anyway.

One of those things we just have to wait and see.

May be Lighting strikes twice! Get it Lighting.... I am sorry.

Well my theory is that the Eidos acquisition allowed the Japanese division to rest on their laurels longer than then should have.

They needed to fall hard on their ass, learn a lesson, and pull themselves back up.

I'm hoping that's just what this news means today.

Except he was the reason they nearly went bankrupt once too.

Besides he's in a decline. Can't remember the last game he did that had the critical acclaim of FF7.

They are only part of Square that makes money. They are going to be fine....

Here's a thought... "Eidos" IE Square Enix Europe is being ran decently and is supposedly doing well... Why not let the head of Square Enix Europe have a crack as CEO of Square Enix and see what he can do to revitalize the Final Fantasy brand and make the Dragon Quest brand more popular internationally?

Of course, knowing our luck, Square Enix is going to go double down on mobile and social, and that's sad.

I agree on your first point, hardware should be cheaper and software should be 30€/$ tops.
Nintendo needs to realize that a handheld is first and foremost a childrens toy on the western markets and it has to be priced accordingly.

But they also need a much broader software lineup. They are releasing their typical Nintendo franchises here and there and that´s not enough. 2012 for example was a complete software disaster, they had like 5 more or less high profile titles (Resident Evil/NSMB2/Paper Mario/Kingdom Hearts). That´s a complete joke compared to what big consoles get.

I don't think Sakaguchi coming back will help. There's still a lot of talent at Square Enix so restructuring is their best bet. Making the company more efficient at what they do with an intelligent CEO at the helm is what they need.

Well it was a bit simplistic I know. However they need to create a product that actually sells and secures income. Currently they are spread over a million products with nothing really beeing finished, instead of focusing on less titles and actually making them "better" and finish them in a good time and quality.
Higher amount of talent focusing on the same title will increase the quality and naturally also the reception from the players.

That sounds fair to me.

Yes, obviously, a lot of the talent behind FF needs to be Japanese creators... But they need someone who's not going to play favorites with existing staff and just get the right goddamn people for the job.

They're actually doing that with A Realm Reborn now. And it shows.

If he got how to run the company 3DS wouldn't have been a mess out of the gate and continue to struggle to sell in the west and only have turned around in Japan. And WiiU wouldn't be the sales disaster it is.

People are so lost when it comes to Iwata and the great things he brought to Nintendo. Iwata became CEO in May 2002

1. Was CEO for Nintendos highest selling home console of all time (Wii).
2. Was CEO for the highest selling hardware in video game history (DS) which recently beat the ps2.
3. The 3DS is currently outselling every other piece of hardware on a bi-weekly basis internationally.

The bias people have against a Nintendo CEO is amazing.

On-topic: Amazing news today, time for Square to make a come back.

This is a good start but they need to do more. They also need to fire all the producers who are more interested in lavishly rendering hairstyles than properly designing games.

As the saying goes... "But what has Iwata done for us lately?"

Nuts to the past, the fact he can't sell a console in a time when the entire world is squeezing pennies is just unforgivable :p

Dude these are very proud Japanese folks. They seem to be disappointed in PS4 being developed outside Japan. For some thing like this to happen they have to have a change in philosophy.

Not that there is any thing wrong with being proud of your culture :P

When your company starts bleeding money like this, somebody has to fall on the sword. In this case, it just happened to be Wada as the CEO and hopefully SE is taken into a better direction now under new leadership/management.

1. Doesn't mean shit if you can't follow up on it (Wii U)
2. Doesn't mean shit if you can't follow up on it (3DS)
3. Care to provide numbers, as I'm finding it hard to believe.

What you're saying is that, for example, Krazy Ken shouldn't have been let go because PS2 was a success despite the PS3 disaster. That's not how things work at all.

Good riddance - maybe now we can start getting the same type of games that we originally fell in love with before Wada tried to westernise everything in pursuit of the dollar.
