Top-level COD competitions look like what we expect

I find people's false sense of superiority to people who play CoD far more offensive than people playing CoD and shouting. The smugness in this thread is pathetic.

I've played hundreds of hours of CoD. There is nothing in that video or in this thread that is remotely inaccurate about the CoD community.

Only one worse that I can think of is the dota community.

It's not exactly rocket science - competitive games where you are largely or entirely anonymous bring out the worst in people, and a lot of that can carry over into the real world when the event takes place in its own little bubble (competitive tournaments, the FGC).

i wish i could say it was surprising that this was an Xbox 360 esports competition.. but it's really not. community is largely toxic

Crazy, but for a million dollars, what are ya gonna do?
Not surprised, we've all experienced this kind of banter online before, it's inevitable when people get passionate, even if it is over the top.

I don't see what the big deal is.
To me, I'd love to see e-sports become a viable thing, it's already gaining momentum, and more eyes are starting to look that direction, I think it'd be great for the gaming industry. But to be taken seriously, it needs serious sponsorship, and mainstream interest. Professionalism on the players and organizers is a necessity. behavior like this only spoils all the work other games/events are putting in to make people take them seriously.

This probably wouldn't have happened if they locked each team into their own booth (without microphones to the outside world), though I'd be nice if it wasn't needed. Perhaps some baseline policies for the tournament laid out prior to it starting, and moderators keeping things in check.

Expectations met.

Yep. I wonder what amount of the total population that plays CoD acts that way. I always like to imagine it's everyone, although it's probably only closer to 90% right? :)

Oh, and the debate about mouse vs controller is stupid. Mice are much more accurate and user controlled, not assisted.

I don't want to start a debate over which is BETTER and takes REAL SKILL, but the fact that using an analog stick involves tremendous amounts of aim assist should tell you something.

What is this "tremendous amounts of aim assist" you are talking about? Because I can't remember having something like a good aim assist in MP shooters on consoles. Some games have a very subtle implementation of this, but at best it's only annoying and I guess most people turn it off.

Crazy. Only made it about a minute and half before I had to turn it off. It's a prime reason why I mute games like this no matter what. This is them in public to. I can only imagine what it's like when they're behind close doors. I still find the idea of a CoD based competitive gameplay strange do the random nature of the game but whatever.

Virtually every console FPS has aim assist/auto aim to some degree, COD included and only a few allow you to turn it off. It isn't even a bad thing, necessarily. When it's implemented well it makes console shooters enjoyable. What it effects is the skill ceiling, though, which is important when considering high level play.

I saw more roid-rage in that video than I ever saw inside a gym.

That's even worse than I expected. No comparison to what I have seen of professional CS, Quake, Starcraft or DOTA.

No worse than the FGC or MOBA communities. Competitive gamer communities across the board are pretty bad. Even the CS community was kinda shitty.

FGC community is no where near that bad. People in the FGC get hype but they aren't cussing at one another at the top of their lungs. Have you even gone to a FGC event or watched a stream?

Yeah, the competitive Moba community is nothing like that either. I think there's a need to distinguish the competitive and general community.

Brb let me find that clip of Noel "only good at shitty games" Brown punching Smooth. FGC is a bunch of dumbass hoodrats for the most part. There's great guys in the scene but mostly its a cesspool. One word: Triforce.

Any competitive game/sport is full of trash talk and vulgar language, I don't even see how this is news-worthy. Seems like a lot of people railing on Call of Duty because it already garners a lot of hate.

I think people are hating on CoD because it lacks skill to play. Compared to numerous other shooters, CoD is a joke at a competitive level. Also being on a console doesn't help. Analog controls simply do not garner the same level of precision and timing that a m/kb do.

Starcraft isn't like this at all. Sure there's a ton of bad manner and rage on the ladder but for the most part the actual professional players are all well mannered and respectful towards each other

so you're talking about east coast then right? Because when was the last time something happened on the West Coast that wasn't stage or Darkprince (who quickly got booted out of the scene until recently after he came back from the army)

edit

Even with the Noel Brown incident, you do know the context right? That Noel's mom just passed away and when he went to play he took his stuff and the picture of his mom out. Smoothviper was talking trash and threw his stuff on the ground. I'm not saying its warranted but its understandable why Noel punched him.

While it's true that human beings + competition have always caused people to act this way, what a lot of people don't like about COD is the idea that it's done the most to attract a fratboy personality to mainstream gaming. Outside maybe Madden and FIFA.

I don't know if this is fair, since if gaming continued to become more mainstream it was inevitable that the same people who would have previously mocked nerds for playing video games would become gamers themselves. If it wasn't COD that appealed to the most people it would be another game.

The reasoning at the end of the OP's video is false. I may curse loudly at my television when playing games, but I don't get on a mic to curse at anyone when playing online. There's a difference between cursing to oneself and cursing at someone who you don't know.

The audience of a sporting event being verbally abusive isn't the same either, these are the players. It's unsportsmanlike behavior, and though players in physical sports may INFREQUENTLY get into fights with the opposing team, they're generally smart enough to not curse at each other endlessly.

I'll take any other game's tournament scene over this. It's sad.
