Kotaku: The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

Personally I think Ubi/Acti are the only ones playing this next gen move well.
Lot of publishers just seem to be taking a lot of stuff for granted market wise.

My 2 cents.

they're supporting ps3 and 360 right now, both at ~76million units, and that userbase is only going to go up.
meanwhile, they're getting ready for "next-gen", which has been pretty obvious for a while now that it means ps4/xb3/pc support. most publishers are also starting to put more games on more casual platforms, like ios and android.
if anything, they're staying clear of where they know they won't make money.

Dudes in there laughing at the Wii U when he said that. I lol'd.

Sad story but one I feel is necessary for Nintendo. They've been short changing their systems ever since the GameCube. They got lucky with the Wii and thought they could ride it out with the Wii U and skimp again. Kind of like how Sony needed the PS3 to happen before they regained focus with the PS4.

It's the engine used for most of EA's future games. Think about what "We don't have time to port it to Wii U" means in this context.

I'm perfectly aware of that ..that's why it might not be them. i mean a studio in EA "could" spend 3 to 9 months to adapt this engine stuff so that it work out on wii U and then give that data to the other studios for quick porting .. but it's unlikely it will be DICE doing that.

Isn't Need for Speed: Most Wanted running Frostbite? There, Frostbite on the Wii U.

As for this, Nintendo has been quiet ever since that Nintendo Direct that was a clear response to the poor sales. I wonder how they will respond to this horrific showing at the GDC.

What are you talking about?

Wii have sold 99 millions of units.
X360 have sold 75 millions of units.
PS3 have sold 74 millions of units.

75+74 = 149 millions

And PS3 is selling very good worldwide yet... x360 too I think...

shesh wasn't really aware that the Wii sales really slowed the past few years

Man, that was cold.
But I have to respect that it was at least straightforward. If Nintendo can't bring the right hardware to the field, we can't really be surprised no one wants to play ball with them.

Lot of buyer's remorse for the Wii U in my household, but if it pulls out some good Nintendo games and Atlus supports it like it still seems they just might, it will be worth it. Dragon Quest X, Bayonetta 2, TW101, all icing on this theoretical cake.

Hopefully Iwata gets the sack soon and someone with his shit together is leading the company for next-next gen.

So even though we already knew it, this confirms that there will be no ports of a decent standard after next gen arrives unless the devs are willing to redo it all in UE3 for Wii U.

Ironically, I'm fine with this. It will force Nintendo to bring out their A game with the 1st party titles to secure hardware sales. Which as a Wii U owner, makes me excited, as that's all I'm looking for in the product anyway. It just means I'll be having to wait a good while between releases.. and hope for the odd inventive/dedicated 3rd party release. I'll play whatever next gen goodness comes my way on the PS4 and PC. Win win. Nintendo have enough in the bank to weather this and put out good games at the same time. I hope they learn from it though.

Doesn't really affect Nintendo fans anyway. They live in their bubble of the dozen or so Nintendo games released for the system. Even if UE4 worked on the Wii U, the fans wouldn't buy UE4 games.

If developers did half-assed rushed ports like they have done in the past then you're right. The fact is, developers are lazy and find the work involved in doing a good job is not worth the payoff. It's easier if they rush a few shit ports out and then blame the system/fans.

Anyways, maybe it's time to have some more western blood flow through the company. Reggie and Iwata have done nothing but damage outside of their awesome PR.

So your saying Nintendo will stop thinking they are number 1 with Wii U and they will regain their focus with Wii U 2?

I don't think MW is running Frostbite

I always find this despiction of Nintendo fans so bizarrely funny. What exactly are "Nintendo fans" supposed to be?

"Nintendo fans" that are general gaming fans (the majority, I would assume) also own other platforms. Of course they wouldn't buy a game on the Wii U that's better somewhere else. Who would do that?

"Nintendo fans" who really only own Nintendo platforms on ther hand are people who logically are only interested in the style of games Nintendo releases. Otherwise they would own other platforms. Since they dont you can assume that there's quite simply not an interest in your average FPS or whatever. However, I very much doubt that this is a very big group. It's probably mostly kids and families.

At this point, I think it's a safe assumption that most Wii U users own another current gen console or PC. The people who have bought the console are gaming fans and not casuals.

I can't wait for PS4 and all the craziness of next gen...but honestly...I love me a good underdog story and I am more eagerly anticipating seeing Nintendo's first-party triumphs and innovations in spite of all these developers hating.

Let's see what you got, Nintendo!! :D

(However, a small part of me would like to see them fail a little with how badly they launched a perfectly capable, high-potential console)

Yes, just like how blockbusters crashed the movie industry.

The post you're responding to is certainly overwrought, but the audience for AAA games is far smaller than the audience for blockbuster films, and there's little reason to expect it to grow next gen. That's the problem.

Anyone really think that Epic would give a shit even if the Wii U had Ps4 specs?

Yes? If they could add another platform capable of running their new engine and attracting new licensees, of course they would. Selling engine licences is a big part of what Epic does. If the Wii U isn't capable - or the market isn't there to make porting it to the Wii U viable - how is that the fault of Epic?

Agreed. Some reactions are silly as hell.

Only the mobile version seriously?

I dunno. The only announced and release games on the platform use MT Framework Mobile. The rest of Capcom's games are moving to Phanta Rhei probs.

Their abortive outsourcing messes all use UE3.

Yeah all developers are so lazy, except Nintendo's they are amazing.

After all this was kinda expected looking at the specs, but holy moly at the way he answered. Seems the Wii U officially took over the Vitas role as the laughing stock or at least is giving the Vita good company.

On the other hand, Wii U does support:

MT Framework Mobile
Lool , mobile only ?
NSMB engine
Not impressive given what i've seen so far

NFS most wanted WII U use a criterion engine named "chameleon" ... source here
