Kotaku: The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

Sounds personal. Not the usual business professional excuses we've heard.
All though, the "the room erupted with laughter" sounds like a little bit of Kotaku doctor.

Yeah it was surprisingly blunt and unprofessional. I'm not saying Nintendo doesn't deserve that kind of dismissive attitude but still.

At this point, I need to comprehend why they went with the energy saving route. It doesn't make any sense at all. With different components they could have released a more powerful console, at the same price of Wii U at launch. Seriously, why? It's so idiotic I can't even try to comprehend why. or better, I feel there's an actual reason: Japanese customes. But the problem is that they should have developed not caring about those but making the best console possible power wise for 299.99/349.99. It's not the gamepad the biggest problem, it's the console itself built with many custom parts just to eat less energy. Why.

I haven't seen any real evidence Japanese customers care about this. We're talking adding a couple light bulbs worth of electricity. Are they really picking and choosing systems based on that? "Hmm... well, I would get PS4, because it's getting Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy 14, but it will cost me .38 cents an hour more on my electric bill than the Wii U. Better get the Wii U!"

Anyone really think that Epic would give a shit even if the Wii U had Ps4 specs?
Actually, yes. They went out of their way to support it with UE3.

Epic has never released a single game for a Nintendo platform, including the N64 and GCN, which were more powerful than the competition at the time. So no. This sudden "SPECS ARE EVERYTHING" mentality is truly hilarious. That being said, it's Nintendo's fault for releasing such a weak console in 2012.
They were going to, actually; they tried to port Unreal (the first one) to the N64, but ultimately had to cancel it. Haven't tried since, though.

This system is so fucked.

And no this isn't gamecube level. This is dreamcast level, except that it won't die and will have some first party support throughout its lifecycle.

But damn. This is terrible. Iwata needs to get out.
Dreamcast actually had third-party support.

Who'd want FFXIV? Wasn't that game a total trainwreck?

And Vita has nothing but the indie games at this point. Fair game if you like the indie games, but that doesn't make it okay. Just like me and the first party games on Wii U

VITA has a great hardware -superior to its rival- and that can keep it on the market for many years... besides, will have full compatibility with PS4.

WiiU has an old hardware -inferior to its rivals- and that, luckily, will keep it on the market for two or three more years.

VITA will have more than 100 games this year, including big games like Soul Sacrifice, Dragon's Crown, YS: Memories of Celceta, Valhalla Knights 3, Killzone, Tearaway, both Final Fantasy X and A LOT of great indie games like Hotline Miami, Lone Survivor or Terraria. And, when PS4 come out, you'll can play most of the PS4 games on the Vita via remote play...

WiiU... what? a Monster Hunter... a Pikmin... and what else this year? And next one, with PS4 and Durango on the market?

Don't talk nonsense...

"Hahaha no." Rein said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter.

Yikes, I read that in my mind followed by the canned laughter of a live studio audience and a rimshot.

But its really business as usual. Denied support, indifference by Nintendo fans, and the die hard clinging to first party games indifferent to the snub. Its nothing new. Is it?

Hasn't similar happened the past 3 generations?

Regardless of what you think of Nintendo and Wii U, this quote (if true) is wildly unprofessional and speaks volumes about why the games industry has a reputation of being run by arrogant children.

MW is on Criterion's own custom engine that they've been using since Burnout Paradise. The alternate NFS titles are said to be running on Frostbite, including The Run.

This is true, but something about the engine makes me think some elements of their engine is based off the Frostbite.

Plus Burnout Paradise uses RenderWare which is created by Criterion in house. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted use new engine.

Epic and Nintendo are both very strong competitors, I'd say that those two companies are competing more-so with each other than Nintendo Vs. Sony/Microsoft. Nintendo already chose sides, they picked Unity. They sat next to them at GDC. They sided with the business model that makes companies like Epic Games (and their flat % licensing fee, rather than a dollar amount like Unity) irrelevant.

So yea, they probably won't get Unreal Engine 4. It doesn't make sense from a business standpoint to give your main competitor your greatest asset.

I'm already repeating myself although this gen has only gotten started, but Western third parties and Nintendo is not a love story with a happy ending.

But I thought the Wii-U was a next-gen console
It is, but it's not as powerful as its peers for the next six+ years.

I'm both surprised and not surprised by this. Someone told me Epic was porting it to the Wii-U and they seemed pretty confident in this. However I can't imagine how the engine would run on the system or why Epic would bother when UE3 already runs on the Wii-U.

Epic said someone could port UE3 to the Wii as well and we all know how that went.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for any company to port the engine to the Wii-U when we don't see more compatible engines being ported over to the system.

Yes, just like how blockbusters crashed the movie industry.

Hollywood has been creatively bankrupt for a while though. High quality TV shows have been surpassing their best for over a decade. This was unthinkable in the '80s.

The videogame market is also at risk. A high barrier of entry is never a good thing, in any market. It stifles innovation.

I'm not sure if Nintendo games alone will be enough this time around. Note that this is Nintendo's first foray to HD game development. This is their transition gen so expect their first party output to be lower than usual.

I just want to know what's going on at Nintendo HQ. Lets be honest, this info about no UE4, no Frostbite and all the other 3rd party games that are not coming to Wii U like MGS, BF4 etc; is not a surprise to Nintendo. They probably knew they were not going to get all that support a long time ago. So why the hell are they sitting on their ass on not getting in front of this shit?

They've been quite over everything. When you think about it though, what could they possibly say to all this terrible info surrounding their new console that hasn't even been on the market for six months and any sort of support has already vanished.

I never thought it would happen but now I will not be surprised if COD is not on Wii U this fall. That is the definite final nail in the coffin in regards to 3rd party support.

Oh shit. Third parties laughing at WiiU.

But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles.

Looks like both EA and Epic regard WiiU as not next gen.

I am actually amazed at how ignorant Nintendo has become.

There is some Epic crow in that thread, I bet.

There is not enough crow in the world to feed some of the poster in the WiiU speculation threads.
Just a taste:

There's really no way that RE6 will miss the Wii U.

Your right...lets research this a bit more..

OHH, so it's Epic's business decision not to port the engine, not that the wiiU can't handle it.

You realize you're quoting the very old Mark Rein quote, right? Hahahaha no is the new answer.

I wasn't expecting it.

Still, seeing Rein reacting like this (and the whole audience) makes me sad about this industry in general.

Nintendo should never have abandoned cartridge-based systems. They could just add chips to their games now for extra sound channels.

I'm already repeating myself although this gen has only gotten started, but Western third parties and Nintendo is not a love story with a happy ending.

Western support is better than japanese support

Of course it's a business decision, what else would it be? And if Epic isn't officially supporting UE4 on the WiiU, there's not much chance others will go and port it themselves.

To be honest, Nintendo seems to be opening up to indie developers as an alternative, which I approve. If traditional third parties don't seem so receptive go for the indies bring more variety that way.

at what point do you guys stop being surprised?

Nobody should be.

I'm fascinated to see how E3 will go for Nintendo now. Will we ever hear a company executive talk about this?

The all-caps VITA makes this post all the better.

At this point I just look at the Wii U as sort of a "boutique" console for people who truly appreciate great and innovative games. Yeah maybe they don't get the huge software dumps of the other consoles, but what's there is exceptionally fun.

It is, but it's not as powerful as its peers for the next six+ years.
At this point I'll be surprised if Nintendo sits this out for that long. I don't expect them to scrap the console too soon, of course, but I would expect to see the next Nintendo home console out on the market before people are even thinking about the PS5 being in the immediate future. It'd be pretty stupid to do anything else.

Basically, y'know how long the GBA lasted? Like, what, three years, before the DS came out?

That thread was if WiiU could run it or not, which it can, not that epic doesn't want to port the engine.
This seems sort of redundant though. I think the idea is that by the time UE4 was "ported", it would be another version of UE3.
