Kotaku: The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

These companies do not view Nintendo as legitimate business partner. They are actively destroying Nintendo and Nintendo as a company needs to do something about.

I think at this point it should be Nintendo's mission to pretty much retaliate. You can't let your company smear your companies reputation so openly.
Calm down, step outside for a while. Nobody is actively destroying Nintendo, not even Nintendo.

I don't understand the console warrior mentality.

I own a Vita. It's doing terribly I can point out its flaws, laugh at it, etc.

Some people take this stuff too seriously. I'm sure Wii U will be fine in the end anyway.

No need for the insults being cast by those so upset at the Wii U's current position in here.

No UE4 =/= failure.

I think it's way to early to declare it dead, seeing as they turned around the 3ds, but unless Sony or Ms makes a massive mistake, I don't see it being anything else then a gamecube in terms of sales.

Having epic literally laugh at our console is not a good thing, given how many games will use UE4.

I think nintendo literally bet the farm that the tablet novelty would propel them to wii like sales, and were not prepared for the public to give it a giant 'meh'.

Ouch. I always seem to buy the consoles that struggle.. I hope they keep it afloat at all costs because it could very well be their last non-handheld.

Where are you even coming up with this leap in logic? lol
Majority of 3rd parties use UE to make their games, EA is using Frostbite mostly. If those 2 engines don't support Wii U, it'll be too much of a task for said 3rd parties to release Wii U games and they will be much more likely to not bother releasing games for it.

It doesn't mean Nintendo won't be releasing games for it, but is sure as hell doesn't bode well for 3rd party support.

At the end the joke will be on the industry, cause if the Wii U don't replicate the Wii success (and we all know it won't), and the PS4/XBOX have a hard time to achieve PS360 numbers, hard times will come for everybody in the game...

Yeah we get it. Everyone is doomed.

I know this may seem pretty crazy and out there but how about they make a system that is not a generation behind in specs and third party friendly.

The decline in casual software sales in the back half of Wii's lifespan should have alerted Nintendo to the fact that they need these established third party developers.

Maybe if Nintendo stopped designing hardware nobody wants to make games for, this wouldn't be such an issue.

Nintendo only has 2 real choices: 1.) Get back into an arms race with Sony/MS and correct the problems that caused them to fail the last time they did this. And no, it wasn't power related. 2.) Go 3rd party.

Not necessarily. They could do what they did with the Wii and the DS and predict and realize a gaming vision different from that of their peers that catches on in the mainstream and explodes. Then they can be consistently profitable regardless of who supports them.

Otherwise, yeah, they should go third party.

Or once their games flop they'll be gone as well. I'm wondering who is actually going to buy Watch Dogs and AC4 on Wiiu
I'll be buying Watch Dogs on Wii U. Time will tell if there is a big enough market for core games on Wii U (I think there will be, just a smaller one that PS/XB of course)

Look at what Rein said.

"But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That's really what our energies are focused on."

Nintendo had their chance to join Epic's vision. They didn't. Their labour can be better spent elsewhere.
What I meant is that it can run on Wii U. Epic might not bring it but I guarantee that if it can run on a mobile phone, Wii U could run it.

Fuck. Wow, straight up laughter.

I...have nothing.

First console to be nearly zero third party support?

Man oh man. Nintendo had better be burning the midnight oil on HD game development with all the new studios they've created...right? They DID prepare for this....RIGHT?!?

Well, they do have over $10 billion in cash reserves, so yes, I imagine they're more than prepared for this. According to Pachter, they have enough cash to last them decades even on the course they're on now.

Well, he did call a room full of (probably very important) third party developers manchildren.

Manchildren is a term that fits that behaviour perfectly though. It's not exactly acting like professionals.
I don't see a room of app developers laugh at Blackberries struggle for example, but maybe I'm wrong.

Exactly. I have a Vita, surprising lots of great games I love but I can laugh at the sales failure. I own a WiiU and I realize it's dead already for mostly anything but 1st party. No big deal, would have bought anyway and can laugh at it.

Yeah that was more of how big will the market be sort of question.

Give me a break. They arent businessman and dont ow Nintendo a thing, well except Rein but his company is super profitable and that wasnt from nintendo.

It's important to note that all of the industry people laughing don't represent the 10 people that attended the Miiverse Conference at GDC nor any of Nintendo's janitorial staff, who I hear get wonderful benefits.

Nintendo should really go third party and find partnerships with content providers while keeping ownership of their brands.

As soon as Iwata is replaced, that move is inevitable. Nintendo's existence as a hardware manufacturer is coming to an end. There is simply no need for it anymore.

Hush that sensible and rational line of thought!

Well it couldn't have been games.

right, you guys have no clue how stupid this all sounds to someone like me when I see this hobby turn into fanboy pissing contest and then see developers encourage macho brinkmanship in something that really only boils down to what? GAMES

it is so much easer to enjoy games when I ignore the core's definition of what I've been playing the past 5 months

I don't really see this as death of Nintendo as much as I see myself at 40 growing tired of what is going on right now in this thread among gamers who are happy to see other gamers get and play less games

I suggested in another thread Nintendo should partner up with Microsoft.

Microsoft's lack of first party but ability to push out hardware could see benefits to both parties.

In what way could they retaliate? If you mean to attempt to develop higher quality titles than the companies that are spurning Nintendo, that would be the result of opinion and only benefit Nintendo console owners.

Nintendo likely won't actively campaign against these companies. That would only lead to further ridicule and abandonment.

Nintendo can continue the course or change its strategy. Nintendo has the money to buy studios. Maybe it should. I just don't think retaliation is the best way to remedy this situation.

yeah that was the problem. the wii u should have been a refinement of the wii. they would have run into issues with development regardless, but they also wouldn't have put out a device they themselves were confused about. the same is true of the 3ds.

Calm down, step outside for a while. Nobody is actively destroying Nintendo, not even Nintendo.

Sure they are. It seems pretty clear from day 1 of Wii. These companies do not view Nintendo as a legitimate hardware company and would much rather see them gone then make games for them.

It's in Nintendo best interest to do something about it, I could care less personally since I will be getting the PS4.

The only thing people are going to remember from Nintendo's GDC 2013 is a mix of this and Mark Rein going "LOL Nintendo".
Holy shit that pic.

Reminds me of

I disagree. Their third choice involves acting more like a 3rd party publisher though, in that they need to actually start releasing all of the potential software that they're sitting on. They've been happy to drop Wii Fit, Wii Sports type titles without doing hardly any work on the content that their core crowd is clamoring for. I don't think people were every truly happy with a proper Mario or Zelda every few years and nothing else. They convinced themselves that it was OK when they owned a Wii, but the truth is that they don't want to be tricked back into that situation.

Lol, I think the new RIP in peace meme is going to be the beast takeaway from this thread.
New? :p

Man that's gotta sting. It's sad that we've come to a point where developers openly laugh at the Wii U. That doesn't seem professional. But at the same time, it's sad what situation Nintendo cornered themselves in.

It's a shame, at least people who enjoy Nintendo games are covered, and know the good ones are coming. I've been a primarily Nintendo gamer most of my life, and this gen i used a PC for my gaming, and Nintendo handhelds. Even if i haven't played most of their games lately, my affinity lies with them.

Sadly, I'm left wondering if they can carry the load by themselves anymore, and the answer is most likely 'no', as evidenced by the late years of the Wii.

I too think there should be some changes at Nintendo, so long as they don't lose what makes them unique.

It's sad that we went from this to what's happening here.

no, coolwhip, you are the manchild. you are the one clinging onto a company that no longer satisfies your gaming needs because of nostalgia

Oh god come on. They have billions to spend and arent going anywhere. This thread is getting out of hand at this point

This was...this was before everyone started entering the room, right?

Apparently only 10 people showed up
