During these moments my Imperial bias becomes very clear as I can't help but root for the Imperial troops. The competition between Kempf and Muller is not gonna help their cause though.

Is Assassination Classroom bad? It seems to be getting nominated for awards left right and centre, and while I know that's not necessarily an indicator of quality it was up for the Manga Taisho this year which normally has a good mix of what's popular and what's good.
I love it but I guess it's been nominated because it's crazy popular.
It's Jump's biggest new series since Death Note so...

Assassination Classroom is really funny and witty while having at times good development of the students trying to rise from their low situations of being in Class E. The art is really creative at times too, looking nice. I dont personally think its the best of JUMP (Haikyuu or World Trigger or Soma is), but its fun to look foward too, and has one of my favorite new characters in awhile, Karma kun.
Oh well its is deserving of its millions of sales with just three volumes and is definitely deserving of its consistent top five place in jump.

That's because GaoGaiGar is a good show, unlike 00 and AGE, which are truly awful shows which I can only assume were not written with making a good show about giant robots in mind.

Now everyone, today's episode was about kicking butt and taking names. It opened with a very stoned looking Sai, and over the course of the episode was mostly about Domon beating the ever loving crap out of Zeus Gundam. Meanwhile, Dark Gundam is back, Master Asia is dying which means this is going to be one hell of a finale, WOOOOONG is laughing mad, and oh, SCHWARZ BRUDER IS KYOUJI AND DR. MIKAMURA WANTED TO STRANGLE HIM. Also hot Rain on Domon action.

So I'm going to try and watch several of these anime when they start to kind of get my feet wet into watching a season of anime as it first airs. Any advice on how not to get overwhelmed by all the various new shows?

If after three episodes you're not really feeling it I would recommend dropping it. Unless the conversation around it is good for a laugh (see Sword Art Online)

Do people here generally watch every new show that airs in a season or do they pick 3-4 highlight ones? I've heard a lot of hype Valverave, the two manga -> anime adaptations (attack on titan/giant and shit eaters) but that's it.

Don't become someone like me who picks up 10+ shows every season because of seiyuu. If it's really bad and you don't feel like continuing a show, just drop it.
I used to take a whole bunch, but since I'm more focusing on older backlog works now, I just take two or three that really interest me.
The 3-episode rule is probably your best friend, whatsoever.
Most of us prioritize based on hype, pedigree and personal interest. A lot of us will watch 6-8 or so first eps and prune from there.
I'm new at this, but I've been trying most things for an episode or two. That works for me.
You don't need to watch the first episode of every show, it's pretty easy to drop most shows before they even start.

If you discharge every show about a group of 4-5 little girls, the reverse harem by DEEN, the 3-4 Harem VN adaptations it's easy to watch every first or second episode of the most interesting shows.
