Yep. I enjoyed 9, but ugh..As a game? FFVIII is absolutely better than FFIX.
You can see a comparison of the HD remake vs PCSX2 in the op and make that call. Beyond that, we're getting extra content from the International versions.
FFIX's combat is slow, and seriously, the developers took inspiration from FFVIII's combat when they designed Zidane's steal command to be as repetitive, monotonous and bad as almost everything FFVIII's combat had to offer. The trance system is bad? yes, but at least it can be easily ignored: it doesn't hurts the game, it doesn't hurts the diversity in command choice, it doesn't breaks the challenge and it doesn't makes you waste any more time with extremely long animations. Outside of that, inputting commands with the characters was at the very least "RPG fun", in the same way FF4's combat system is.
.
So, guys. FFX and FFX-2.
- Better gameplay
- More interesting battle mechanics
- Excellent worldview/setting, unique and interesting
- Great soundtrack
- Eyes on Me
- Ragnarok
- Main character isn't a fucking monkey
Still waiting on LM info before I decide if I need two copies or just one. A part of me wants to think they will be there as it has a canon storyline and we've never got it, but I'm not holding out much hope.
Yeah, I'm just going to write it off for now. This was a thing that I didn't know existed until two weeks ago, so it feels silly to get invested in it when I was already crazy hyped for the games before that.
If they do manage to get the VAs in for it, though, awesome!
Is there any reason to go for the true HD remake as opposed to simply playing the originals through PCSX2? Because quite frankly, they look really damn good through the emulator.
I will concede that the games look wonderful in emulated 1080p, but the answer to your question is still a yes:
- International content (optional Expert sphere grid, some new abilites, Dark Aeons, Penance)
- Actual widescreen (yes, you can hack it in PCSX2 with a .pnach file, but the interface, menus, sphere grid, etc. are still all stretched from 4:3)
- Better textures on pretty much everything: quadruple-resolution for characters, and at least double-resolution for enemies, environments, etc
- Much-improved character models (Lulu in particular is a night-and-day difference)
- Improved sound, especially music (streaming from disc rather than through a sound chip)
- Updated CG cutscene textures, etc., and properly formatted for 16:9
- Portability (if you're getting the Vita version, which I am)
- Trophies, if you care about that sort of thing
- Buying the remasters will hopefully encourage Square to do more of these, and we can all get hyped for FF12 Zodiac Job System HD
Off the top of my head. Damn, I want these so badly...
Is it me or are the guys in 8 way stronger than the girls? Poor ladies.
Definitely one of my most anticipated games this year.
Let her HP low, Limit Break -> Degenerator. Win.ppl use Quithis?
I hope we'll see game play or more news this week im so pumped for wednesday/thursday
Eh, kinda yeah, but Quistis is the most boring Blue Mage that isn't Kimahri. Blue magic should be more than just damage-dealing, but apart from the standard bad breath/white wind/mighty guard mainstays, she's all about simplistic offense.
I thought they'd already mentioned they were recording more voices for the Japanese version.I'd like to see how they intend to keep them in without recording new voices, in the Japanese version...
(hopefully, the guy was just thinking of the first game when he said that)

You can't wish news and media into existence, man. GAF has some influence, but it doesn't run quite that deep.
6's are fine IMO, it's just that the (drastically overpowered) Magic command eclipses it. But they have the fundamental amount of variety and weirdness that makes them pretty similar to 5, 7, and 9.Strago is the worst Blue Mage, but that's more 6's problem than anything else. The thing about Blue Magic is that you're at the mercy of what the enemies have. Sometimes you have a great selection of stuff (like in 5 and 7), and sometimes you get either a shitty collection of moves (6) or a few standouts with not much else (8).
I haven't played enough of 10 (or any of 11), but the ranking pretty much goes 5 > 7 > 9 > 8 > 6.

8, 10, and 10-2 are pretty much just all damage-dealers.
well we need to use our powers to get newsbut I doubt it will be a video or anything significant.
Ehh, disagree. Strago is overshadowed because his equipment and stats suck, but his skillset, like just about every other one in FF6 that isn't Morph or Rage, is kinda pointless in the endgame mainly because Attack and Magic are better for nearly everyone.Yeah, Strago is pretty much overshadowed by FF6 itself. It still doesn't excuse his measly spell list, though. And for FF8, the game itself is essentially "deal damage." There's not much room for status spells to be cast since you can just Junction them onto your attack for better accuracy.

Gotcha. That's what I meant when I said "overshadowed by FF6 itself."
As a game? FFVIII is absolutely better than FFIX.
Thank you. IX's battle system is at least competent. The only way you can say VIII is better if you like completely breakable systems.FFVIII is a very fun game for the perfectionists that like to break it and maximize their characters. Outside of that, FFVIII's combat is so poorly implemented, that it ties with FFIX's for slow gameplay.
I've never played a RPG, like I did with FFVIII, that has a combat system that creates so many incentives for a player to waste time mindlessly spamming the same skill several times in a row (Draw system, GF system, Limit Break system), while punishing players for actually trying new skills or trying to create any sense of diversity (a magic command system with the purpose of NOT being used). What has saved FFVIII's combat was that the limit breaks were actually interesting, all being interactive and in several different ways, and that junction can be broken in such way such so attack and limit breaks is all you need to beat the game. FFVIII's combat is idiotic, because it only becomes fun when you get to know enough of the game to learn that you should trash almost everything it has to offer, and dumb it down to two commands, attack and limit break.
FFIX's combat is slow, and seriously, the developers took inspiration from FFVIII's combat when they designed Zidane's steal command to be as repetitive, monotonous and bad as almost everything FFVIII's combat had to offer. The trance system is bad? Very much so, but at least, it can be easily ignored: it doesn't hurts the game, it doesn't hurts the diversity in command choice, it doesn't breaks the challenge and it doesn't makes you waste any more time with extremely long animations. Outside of that, inputting commands with the characters was at the very least "RPG fun", in the same way FF4's combat system is. Which is a step forward to FFVIII's "please, spam draw 11 times with each character, then spam GFs for long-ass animations, unless you're a hardcore player, because if so, you can simply one-hit kill anything by pressing X twice" exciting combat system.
You could fix FFIX's combat by revamping the trance system and upping its speed. But to fix FFVIII's, you would have to redesign everything. The unusuable magic system, the monotonous drawing system, the overpowered-or-useless monotonous and time-wasting GF system, and the means to abuse limit breaks.
But honestly, outside of their flawed combat, both games are top tier at gameplay. There's so many little things to do in the world map and in the towns, and each even offers a big and fun, highly rewarding mini-game.
Squall/Rinoa/Quistis for me. Quistis is a total goddess.
Guys... this is a FFX and FFX-2 remake thread, not a thread for arguing which Final Fantasy game you think is better than the other.
Every Final Fantasy thread will become a comparisons or listing thread.
It is law.
