Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

I still prefer Raidou 1's story to 2's, but it's not worth slogging through it to experience first-hand as it's basically the only thing even potentially better than in 2. Nothing a wiki recap or LP can't solve!

It's a fantastic game, and only Raidou 1 has
Messians
!

That said, they're both great games, but Raidou 1's the marginally better experience.

And Devil Mode is the stuff of nightmares.

SMT4 sounds really nice with its scale anytime difficulty. Do you think that'll play out well for someone in for the story over everything else?

It should. Given their history with P4Golden and Soul Hackers 3DS, it definitely feels like they're open to giving the players the option for a more casual experience.

You know? This game is now available for preorder on Amazon. They say July 16th too.

Well, I pretty much went through and added most every SMT game that was available on Amazon to my wishlist. I foresee lots of late nights coming my way, but frankly...the games are good.

Kind of kicking myself for not getting into them before.

At school right now, what's Omi's opinion on all this?

Well I'm more into the Persona games than mainline SMT in general, so you know, my opinion should be held in about as low regard as possible. But...

I think that the way the sprites are 2D is probably an aesthetic choice made early on when the game was possibly an SMT remake. Let's just put it this way: if they wanted 3D models, there are plenty of assets from last-gen that could've been recycled. I think it's fair to draw the conclusion that sprites were a creative rather than budgetary choice. Seems to make sense that it could've been a remake, to me. We were discussing that they could've expanded it beyond the original for creative reasons (and, as such, it's no longer right to call it a remake), or marketing/business guys decided that SMTIV would sell better than a remake, and that decision enabled a more expanded framework. I don't know.

I don't like to speculate much when there are people far more knowledgeable on SMT than me. I'm definitely a Persona guy still looking to branch out into other SMT stuff. Slowly.

I had to ragequit at that point in the game. I think I deleted my save file. D:

I soldiered through, but I was so ready to be done after that point that I was pissed to see there were still a couple more dungeons to go - both of which were cakewalks compared to Eridanus. I really want to get the other two endings, but that one dungeon is like a huge roadblock to me.

One mainline game that is in 50hz and plays like ass. I really need to import the US version.

And it's full of bugs. One where it will constantly freeze in the Labyrinth of Amala and one where it freezes right after the final boss so you can't start new game+.

What is it with SMT games and bugs?

I know right, even Raidou is filled with them!

The ability to just place notes on the map would have made it far less frustrating. There is still trial and error with warping everywhere but I'm not going to write down notes on paper while playing the game on the bus.

Interesting to see that the battles are 2D Sprites on 3D environments, and there's some pretty nice, screen huge art for all the enemies.

Also that pre-battle music is totally the same song from the original SMT, just slowed down.

The battle music is awesome.

Also, did they fix the ass sound quality for most battle themes in the PAL version of Nocturne? For some reason they sound like they were recorded through a bucket which is really unfortunate :/ I have no idea how they passed through quality checks.

So have you gotten a 3DS yet? Can't wait for JRPG summer: this, and Tales of Xilia.

I think the bucket-ness was on purpose, every track sounds kind of "raw". From what I've heard on Youtube videos the music is exactly the same when compared to my PAL copy.

Yep, all the music sounds like SMT1/2 homages so far, like I thought it would.

Whats up with the rating on this vid?

There's also the Fiend Battle theme from SMT3 in one of the trailers :)

just watched a normal battle vid, loving the battle theme and the battles look extremely fast and smooth, this is going to be my goty.

But there isn't a single mention of persona in the comments section, if you guys aren't being sarcastic, I would hope you guys were being.

maybe some of those dislikes came from Persona GAF lols. Not like you have to comment on a YT video to dislike >_<

I shouldn't have to put a sarcasm note this time.
