Skullgirls DLC Character vote | The Campaign united us, The Voting will destroy us

I love Marie but if you think she's making it to the next round you guys are nuts.

I rarely see anyone vote for her/support her, but apparently she's got the full force of Japan behind her, which if true should push her into at least the top 8 (and probably top 4 if Feng/Venus/Aeon all drop this round and the moe vote is focussed).

There's probably noone in the current top 16 who appeals less to me, though, even among the little girls.

Eight slots can allow for one or two surprises. It is the top 4 that will cause Japan grief.
Damn, I got owned. Praise the sun.
Praisethesun_zps86252e68.jpg

Visually she isn't badass. She might well be when she's in motion, but it's ironic badassery, not "I wear a tank" or "steampunk scientist".
True
Umbrella is a hunch. It's weird. Out of all the characters on that list, she's the one I would like least to win. She's already guaranteed a spot if LZ get to make a publisher-funded expansion or sequel. I tend to be gloomy, so she gets to round three over Annie, who I would prefer.
I was super hyped about her at first because I thought she'd be a water based character, but now I don't care all that much at all.
I took the image from the front page, threw a box around it and did some text boxes... :P
I figured you'd have a version that doesn't have all that writing over it.
Predictions for top 8:

Annie
Beowulf
Black Dahlia
Feng
Isaac
Marie
Minette
P. FAUST
Almost the exact same as mine.
Hm, I still think there's very big overestimation of how much the more vocal hype for Beowulf and Isaac translates into actual votes (along with just how much Japan is actually rallying behind Marie specifically, or that there's enough support for her elsewhere for them to be the deciding factor). Right now, I see Annie as having a better chance for top four than any other female in the running at this point. No idea who the other three would be, but Beowulf, Isaac, AND Panzerfaust making it that far just seems farfetched (at most, it would be one of those three, and that's if any males at all can make it to the end).

Top 8 for Beowulf and Isaac though, yeah, good chance. But really, expecting only one female to make it to the final four just doesn't seem realistic, even with infighting accounted for.
Yeah, there won't be a 3-1 split here. Isaac just got a bump from the people who watched Mike hype him. People have been speculating about Beowulf before the game even came out.
Annie, has a meteorite sword, can channel the power of the stars. This enough already has many possibilities, but then you think..

Oh, wait. She has a parasite! Not just a sword, but has a parasite as well. Which definitely adds into her moveset possibilities just as greatly.

Plus she isn't your ordinary 'moe' character. She's been around for yeaars. Learning things over the course of time. With inspiration of Guts/Sol, her fighting style could be ruthless with hint of all the magicalness in a deadly form.
Yeah, I'd bet on her before anyone else if I were a denizen of the Canopy Kingdom.
And that's exactly what Annie's been doing. Until Panzerfaust or Beowulf can say the same, I know where I'm pushing my chips.
Likewise

No this kind of bad ass

Time powers.

And fixed it again.

Ha!

But seriously: if all Isaac gets is a watered down version of The World: Stop Time, it's not worth it. You could mine JoJo's and come up with a lot more inventive stuff, like a super that erases the events that came before. Level 3 super: cut the preceding 5-10 seconds of gameplay from the time stream. The meter and time remain spent (and you're in the current game state, not in mid-combo), but the damage is just gone. Animation would just be a roll back of what happened, with the moves ripped off screen.

Aeon is in charge of time manipulation and erasure/creation.
Isaac just travels through the existing line.

Look man, if Doc Brown can use his knowledge of the future to save himself from a ruthless terrorist attack, and HE'S not a god, then I'll be damned if Isaac can't have a move to remove damage!

Rather than remove damage, I would give a move that fits the playstyle Mike has given him. For example, he could have a super that summons future obstacles to autoblock your attacks for a few seconds.

It's important to differ the two characters because I want Aeon to win. :P

AHA!

The autoblock super has some potential. A period where every attack can be "perfect parried" a la Metal Gear Rising to do more damage and Isaac's own attacks are faster, do chip damage (because he knows how you're going to defend). But the problem is that it allows someone to kill clock if they want to get a time over. Maybe follow it up with a period where you're slower.

I'm pretty sure we will make Umbrella say "Uguu~" but it will be ironic.
Haha damn, that would be quite impressive.
Beowulf is by far the worst potential male character; I really don't understand his following. Non-distinct design with zero visual charisma, no potential for crazy Bahjid sakuga, no interesting ties to the story or already existing cast and the most annoying dudebro bait personality of them all. If I wanted a stock wrestler character I would just play Street Fighter. Plus, I've always found grapplers sleep-inducingly boring.
Not reignite arguments but I agree that I don't understand Beowulf's following at all. But if it works out for players and he's fun then... more power to them I guess.
Reposting this fantastic propaganda art for the new page.

So good.

Well. Beowulf is actually a pretty funnily written character..

He has been described numerous times as being alot like kamina from gurren laggenn..and then the fandom and mike z added bits of macho man in there..

In addition to that he is literally a wrestling version of the literary figure beowulf. He fought the undefeatable gigan grendal in order to win the championship belt.. Hrunting is beowulf's sword name but with him it's a chair named the hurting.. On another note when Beowulf left his castle to fight one last time he died in the book fighting a dragon. So possible spoilers.

His name is beowulf and he wears a wulf pelt hoodie so there is a wolf pun there. And this possibly also a referance to japanese wrestling tag team get wild who did the same thing with pelts but irl.

Mike saying he's not kanji actually gives alot away..Kanji plays like a traditional grappler character..with attacks and mix-ups used to control space and lead to command throws..with no actual wrassling moves involved..Most of his referances seem different from that play style or wholly original. Contrary to popular belief not all the characters in the descryption play like zangief.

and just saying there are many many many many wrestling moves to never be seen in a 2d fighting game..and so many that deserve it.

As for design he might come off a little bland..but. I mean a guy fighting eldritch horrors, cat ladys, nazis, and parasites, with a chair..and that of all things seems tame..
?

It's almost tempting to pull reverse sexism dark magic out over this..I mean let it go. Manly man tropes can be fun and cool and fit in this game. Gaston from Beauty and the Beast was a bastard but wasn't he entertaining at least?

Then there's also the fact that Beowulf's chair is named The Hurting (Beowulf's sword in the folk tale is named The Hrunting).

Hmm, Japan making up only 6.2% of the votes hurts my expected chances for Marie.

Thank god

I feel like I need some kind of funny celebratory .gif to express myself.

We're not done yet though.

Decided to take after Huw in presentation of my predictions.

Take it all with a grain of salt, of course, because I'm really not sure who could take that fourth spot in the top four. Marie could even claw her way there.

I'd also bet Ravid is looking at all the predictions going on in this thread and looking back at all the survey data and just laughing.

EDIT: Peacock upfront is warming the cockles in my heart.

Speaks volumes about the demographic of this community. Would be interested in seeing how the split went for other fighting games.

You're the worst, give me back my monies

Sorry, we spent yours first.

Yeah, I found that really interesting. And I also wonder how this stacks against other fighting game audiences.

Also, I think it's interesting that a plurality of our audience is interested in character gameplay concepts even though they seem to lean pretty casual overall.

I think part of the interest in the game is as sort of an open-book R&D lab for various out-there concepts that wouldn't make it into more mainstream games.

Would be interesting to know how the top character varies based on response to this question.

It'd be interesting, but God knows when these Japanese companies will be proactive the way LZG are. I'd love to see the statistics for other audiences. Capcom is currently only doing SF since it's the only thing they've really got for fighters right now.

Depends on what your idea of a casual even is. It startled me that a regular member of the Fighting Game Weekly threads(who plays a mean game of SF and even streams games) considered themselves a casual. If people like me and the folks in that thread are casuals then it's pretty easy to see how we might be strongly swayed by gameplay.

Also, you guys have always pitched the gameplay before anything else so you kinda shape your audience. Just like ASW gets people really invested in stories and Capcom's audience rarely talks lore unless it's about a SF movie.

There's a difference between being a casual player (I certainly qualify as such) and a casual stream-monster (which I certainly am not.) :)

These two questions bugged me so much because I don't play SG but I have been following it closely in the past year. I own a Wii so I've been waiting for it to come out on PC.

The second question should've came first and the first question should of been contextual, if you played the game you would get that question and if you didn't play the game a question like "what draws you to skullgirls" or "what would it take for you to play skullgirls" should've been sent to to those who picked "never" as their answer.

Double / ダブル : 4.1%
Hilarious that people dislike her so much but she gets played a lot even after getting readjusted in the hornet bomber patch.

Same, I don't own SGs so technically my answer just skews the data

If you don't go to tournaments to compete, you're casual lololololol

Seriously.

This is just me, but as someone who's barely stepped five feet out from the comforting bosom of training and arcade mode (thus am casual as all get out), Skullgirls is a game first and foremost, thus my first concern with it is how much fun I think I'll have playing with or against the characters that populate it. I'd consider potential for wild and crazy animation ala Peacock or Double a priority, but if it comes down to it, I'd prefer to try out something I've never imagined before even if it means compromising a bit in how much visual appeal/potential I find in a design.

That all said, if it comes down to Annie or Isaac, I think my brain will overheat.

Yeah, pretty interesting stats. Also putting the region statistics next to the top 20 contributing nations is interesting as well.

Bahaha Awesome. Someone with photoshop skills, Let's continue to ignite the fire by putting Annie or Umbrella on this one:

shoot.gif

Annie would work better because the kid is holding a doll, but I actually like Annie. Plus, she's more likely to survive so it wouldn't make sense to kill her.
