Mark Wahlberg is a bad ass

While I don't criticize someone for not feeling ready or capable to perform in a film like Brokeback Mountain, his comments about why he didn't do the movie have always irritated me.

The mere notion of this asshole being in that movie is unsettling.

I'm glad he wasn't in that movie. Mostly because he sucks at acting (that and he's an ass). His best role was in Boogie Nights, and that's because porn actor can't act shit.

He might not express his thoughts as recklessly as he did when he was young, but that doesn't mean they're not there. He might just be hiding in political correctness. At least that the feel I get from that comment on BBM.

Exactly. What's under the hood hasn't changed, and that was reflected in his somewhat childish comments about BbM. But he uses political correctness to present himself as having "matured".

I can't even fathom a prick like that bringing a quantum of sensitivity and care to the film in the way Ledger or Gyllenhaal did.

As a multimillionaire he hasn't even sought out the guy he partially blinded because he doesn't feel guilty anymore. He ruined someone's life, has the potential to make amends, and chooses not to because he's at peace with it. So glad, I was worried the guilt was eating at him. ;)

apparently I was never 16 because I was never an asshole who beat up a guy and left it blind at that age

I must have skipped from 15 to 17

The mere notion of this asshole being in that movie is unsettling. And who advised him to not take the role? His Catholic priest.

It all makes sense. The racist criminal asshole turned to religion and became a better person for it. ;)

Gay sex? No, no, no. Go kill people.

The point of the "Were you never 16?" comment, while badly/wrongly worded was probably that it isn't right to hold grudges against people for their mistakes that far in the past, especially when you were still young. Sure, at 16 you're almost mature and grown up, but only almost. Guess what, young people do stupid things for whatever reason, hanging with the wrong crowd, peer pressure and whatnot. Look, I'm not by any stretch defending his actions as I'm sure some will say I am, just saying I don't think it's right to judge him today by something he did over 25 years ago.

He PERMANENTLY BLINDED a man in an unprovoked racist attack. Don't give me that 'he was 16' mess.

Hey man if you weren't out beating up old men at 16 it just means you were probably at home playing World of Warcraft, SQUARE.

You can judge someone if it seems like they haven't really grown out of that mentality or never actually made amends.

I had no knowledge of his troubled past before this thread. I'm shocked. Regardless, I still like him. He's in some of my favorite movies.

Oh wow.

He beat a man until he was blind in one eye. That, in my opinion, is unforgivable.
If he was racist at a young age and wasn't a violent piece of shit that beat people up, but eventually changed his views then fair enough. But that's not the case.

Edit: That sentence is unnecessarily long but I can't be fucked trying to word it any better.

Well, yes, but not everything is forgivable (especially if he doesn't make amends when he clearly can).

I'd say small things can be forgotten, blinding someone is not a small thing.

Besides, he sounds like he's still very immature.

I'd agree with you if he were my friend or a member of my family.

But he isn't. My only interaction is to watch him sell me stuff.

And it so happens he's better at selling me stuff in which he doesn't appear - Boardwalk Empire for example.

At 16 you're still largely a product of your environment. Not excusing such awful actions, but you can't say Wahlberg is still a bad person because of them.

What does still make Wahlberg a bad person is that he hasn't done anything to help or compensate the man he blinded, or his family. Fuck him.

what movies would those be? because I am drawling a blank on any movie that he was in that could be in anybody's favorite list.

I suppose your first point is true, that is pretty shitty.

He always plays the same role. No way could he have done bbm. At 16 most know what is right and wrong. The guy is trash. Stop watching his movies
