I loled

$50 is not a problem in my eyes. I've paid more for less. I'm still shocked it's coming so soon. I wonder what kind of goodies will come with launch copies.

Jack Frost plushie, pls Atlus

Also: re Lucifer, we got a school girl-ish Lucifer in SJ. Wonder what shape he/she will take in this game.

Did I miss something why on earth is this game $50?

Business and probable sales conclusions ATLUS arrived at looking at their performance of similar titles in the same regions.

I would like it cheaper too, but i'll take it at $50 over no localization at all. I'll definitely be getting my money's worth out of this, especially compared to the majority of shit $60 games that come out nowadays.

There's just far too much content that $40 wouldn't cut it.

The more realistic reason is that Atlus knows that SMTIV won't sell large amounts, and that the people that would buy SMTIV would be willing to pay that amount.

When did Atlus announce the pre-order bonus for Etrian Odyssey IV and Soul Hackers?

Also, put me in the camp of expecting something nicer than a soundtrack CD (I actually don't even own a device with an optical drive any more) and an artbook that's more like a pamphlet than anything else.

Eh, well they lost a day 1 sale here. Will buy once it's appropriately priced though.

Because they can set the MSRP to whatever they wish. Because they know not as many people are going to buy this as a game targeting the Call of Duty horde. Because it's only the fourth main/numbered game in a series that began in 1992; it's kind of a big deal. Most people are really underestimating or downplaying just how huge of a get this was for the 3DS.

Then there's the possibly-bigger-than-usual cartridge ROM size. Over 400 demons, it's fully voice-acted, probably lots of movie cutscenes and locations to visit, etc. (On a similar note, and for similar reasons, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Pokemon X/Y ended up being $50 as well.)

We're also getting the game in the summer rather than in late 2013/early 2014 - that might have something to do with it. It's definitely a much quicker turnaround than anyone expected.

Thinking of all the 7-10 hour games that we've all paid $50-$60 for at some point or another, it doesn't strike me as a particularly bad deal. You'll get your money's worth with this one.

I've never bought a 7-10 hour game, just a waste. I'll rent them. I don't mind paying more for huge games though. I mean I payed $410 for MH3U lol. I almost always just do a $/hr analysis on each game, regardless of how good it is there is a certain threshold I won't go under.

With this logic should Nintendo start charging $200 per main Pokemon based on content? Pokemon is $40 right now FYI. I'll pay $40 for SMTIV, not a penny more(sans tax of course).

Dont understand this really. People may more for better golf clubs, shoes, food, underwear, etc. Unless if its software then it's only $x9.99 where x is 3/4/5 depending on handheld/pc/console. There is no logic there.

So, you're saying you won't be buying the game. Honestly, I only see the price of hardcopies going up, not down.

SMT games always go down.

Then again Pokemon won't be fully voiced and cutscenes are minimal.

That's just pulling out a crazy extreme when most are only saying when they put in enough effort a MODEST raise is justified. It's not like all video games cost the same to make either or will sell the same, I don't doubt prices should've been far more fluid than they have been lately.

Though I'm guessing at this point most people are stuck with whatever mindsets they have.

It's not modest in my opinion and neither is any of the justification for it, I'm honestly quite surprised with how supportive of the price increase here when games like Revelations and Uncharted got blasted for their "modest" price increase pretty hard on these forums. (more so revelations)

Revelations and Uncharted are 12-15 hours games at most (Revelations probably more thanks to raid mode), while SMTIV could be 40-50 for one playthrough.

Probably because a RE game won't even have half the content of a game like SMT IV.

If the game wasn't fully voiced, $50 would be ridiculous. But it is. Now, Soul Hackers is fully voiced too, but there's probably a lot more voice in SMT IV.

The game has 100 Challenge Quests/sidequests too, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a good amount of VA included in the sidequests in addition to the main story (50+ hours?).

What have I started through my quoting mistake?

Actually I DID defend those, but I suspect part of it (which DOES apply to me) is that they're simply not games they WANT at $50. Uncharted's fun to go through but not really a $40+ title to me even on consoles, and Resident Evil Revelations was almost certainly not going to be the second coming of RE4 so I wouldn't want to pay full price for it, and as I didn't espect RE4 to blow me away I waited until it was $20 and winning GotY awards before going "maybe I should check this out." But this, it's Shin Megami Tensei IV, and with higher production values. Even without SMT:N being one of my favorite PS2 games it's almost certainly going to be a meaty, reasonably long RPG, and those I'm always more willing to pay more for.

But I admit it's all relative, and I guess it may never seem "worth it" to you, but I do think it's important consider how much you'd actually likely enjoy a game and if that will be enough for the price. It's why I went ahead with getting MGR sooner than later despite normally being that kind of bargin bin game, Platinum impressed with Bayonetta and Vanquish and the demo was fantastic.

EDIT: And I do have to admit I'm still waiting on SMTIV to show up in my Amazon Gold box before pre-ordering, but with taxes that should bring it to just above $50 rather than being $54 or whatever.

It's 50 because it's an expensive game that will sell like crap, you have the right of waiting till it's 40(it might never happen knowing Atlus)

Day 1 for me, but I perfectly understand why a lot would be mad at the price. i haven't gotten games because they are still 60

Honestly, this series' lineage & chronology confuses the hell out of me (besides the persona spinoffs). I'd love to explore it more, but I just don't know where to begin. I've even searched on wikipedia for some sort of idea, but to no avail.

How many hours? 100+? I'd pay 50 for that.
I'm thinking PROBABLY not that, we have no idea yet but I'd guess 30 at a minimum, 80+ at an extreme.

This may be of some help. I wouldn't set it too much if you're doing this to figure out where to jump rather than just to explore the series history though.

I'll never pay more for a game just because it's longer, I don't want devs to just put tons of filler in their games to give them "value"

I'm paying 50 because it's fucking SMT4, I've waited for this since Nocturne

Nocturne and SJ were both like 50 hours for me (for the story). Nocturne I spent 80 total hours on, SJ closer to 60 I believe? And this game has 100 sidequests. Not sure if I'll hit 100 hours but probably like 80+.

Yeah, while RPGs are usually AT LEAST twice as long as the average action/FPS and as such are a better dollar-to-hour value it's mainly because it's the type of gameplay that FEELS more substantial and more fun, we had the inverse with FFXIII where despite being 40-50 hours it feels as relatively empty as a game like CoD or Uncharted (single player) because of how linear it is and how the one time it opens up it's mainly to do a bunch of monster hunts rather than more interesting sidequests or new dungeons like in other FFs. Ergo, MGR's just fun as hell so it's worth going for sooner than later.

Strange Journey was long as fuck, I think it took me 70 hours because I did tons of stuff and fusing.

Nocturne took me 100

Persona 3 Portable took me like 90 and I 100% it...

Freaking long games(and my time in Etrian Odyssey's is insane, easily 100+)

Holy fuck, do you use the word fuck in every post? That's fine by me! ;P

I've never played a mainline SMT game before, so I'll probably start with this one. Hopefully I don't get lost.
