EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

He is now 28, and tells us that he has turned down seven-figure offers from large corporations and gaming networks to buy his site

Maaaaan, fuck that, Evilore, I would have taken that money
KuGsj.gif

Yeah... so tell me, how long did you consider selling it? I'd have pondered a long time...

Cliff.

This isn't happening.
I think he's confusing the subset of GAF that is actually like "FUCK YEAH HE GOT FIRED" with.. y'know, the rest of us. The collective bit is quite a stretch.

Otherwise Cliffy has a few good points otherwise and at least isn't trying to say that Adam Orth should have no accountability on the ordeal like everyone else who's opened their mouth about the situation, so for that I still respect him.

I'm kinda disgusted at people taking pleasure in someone getting fired though. I mean yeah, he got what he was asking for, but that doesn't mean I'm about to hope everything related to dude crashes and burns alongside his career.

Who is 'reveling' in the fact he lost his job? I mean, can CliffyB list names?

There is a difference between saying 'he deserved to lose his job' and actively celebrating the fact; nobody wants anyone fired, but people are safe and can still be perfectly good people if they say the guy deserves to be fired. And in the position he is, he has absolutely nobody to blame but himself. People need to take personal responsibility for their fuck ups. It may be hard at first, but it's right.

Yeah, basically no one in that thread waws celebrating, it was just a lot of people saying that he deserved what happened to him. Completely different things.

I'm sure someone somewhere in the grandness of the internet was 'grave-dancing,' though the question becomes why even address that? People have expressed enough discourse and reasoning as to understand how this Orth situation went down. Is it just that it's easier to address the 'mass hysteria' as they see it and then generalize everything about everybody?

I'm not surprised, though, that people like Bleszinski and a few other people have seemingly enormous enough egos that accountability and self-awareness is alien.

What did GAF do to earn such ire from all sides of the media?

Not gobble up their bullshit.

Please point out these people you're disgusted with.

Why does Gaf get singled out? We're not even that strict. If Gfaqs had the same registration/ban system they'd be far, far, far worse. At least here I'm treated like an adult. On gamefaqs you can get modded for posting spoilers of a past event of a certain series in the final episode of said topic. Try to contest it and they'll just say "oh but people might stumble upon it". You, the user is always wrong when contesting, always.

hivemind? Have you seen other forums? /v/ is a hivemind but far, far more hostile. r/gaming is a hivemind too.

Devs post here? Not many. Reddit has developers and other famous people posting there all the time. What makes neogaf so special?

We've always been a community of gamers with a diverse set of opinions. Why is this so difficult for these people to understand? Why are we labeled as a hivemind?

You'd be surprised.

All this recent hoo ha that's been going on seems to just boil down to the fact that certain people just don't like perceived plebeians like us to have a say that matters. They're used to advertising at us, giving us the "right" messages about their volumes of work and how they conduct themselves. It's just like all the "never read the comments" quotes from the tech journalism press a few months back.

GAF is a place with intelligent well moderated sensible comments. We're passionate & literate. GAF cuts through a great deal of the bullshit. With the EDGE story and quotes GAF is getting recently the people who play the games have an intelligent sensible voice that CAN'T be quoted away as "oh, never listen to the comments"

It's terrifying to them & certain elements of the industry and the press simply do not know how to react. We live in interesting times my friends. Interesting times.

waitwaitwaitwait wait wait wait

if evilore won't budge from 7 figure offers... how much does he make just from the ads and backseat handshakes and what not?

Please point out these people you're disgusted with.
Pretty much all the people praying for him to get fired (as the only solution to this fiasco) in the rumour threads and then rejoicing in the Adam Orth thread as it being some sort of personal resolution.

I'm insulted at the snub of OT! OT is just as breaking with news stories as the gaming side is with gaming related news!

OT represent!

CliffyB has really jumped the shark. He should not be accepted as a consultant in any way shape or form and his blog is incredibly egotistical.

I would wager that's confidential, my friend. GAF is privately owned and doesn't need to disclose this stuff. Besides asking about people's money isn't kosher. It's his business.

I've been shot at and blown up, got a Purple Heart in Iraq, and this shit would still make me nervous.

I would do it, though. I would so do it. Looks like the most fun.

Thank you for your service sir, and you totally should do it. After that WINGSUIT MOTHER FUCKER!

I'm not surprised, though, that people like Bleszinski and a few other people have seemingly enormous enough egos that accountability and self-awareness is alien.

From the way CliffyB is talking about Adam, it seems they knew each other and hung out on occasion... and from that perspective, it's easy to see why he might be 'blinded' by his relative closeness to this individual and might think of him only in terms of 'that cool cat who likes to joke around a lot.'

Adam probably is a nice guy and I have no doubt CliffyB genuinely feels he's a good person. But again, this is not the same as being the right guy for a particular job. It is clear Adam destroyed at least a portion of his value in his position when he did what he did.

With Adam I just can't help but think about all the stupid things I've said or jokes I've made with people around that when taken out of context ("harmless jokes a student makes when with friends/joking around with people/stuff obviously not meant seriously") could've been blown completely out of proportion I can't help but feel sorry for him (even though e.g. the context or our position is completely different). Like what if someone took my jokes/comments and put them in a completely different context? I honestly don't want to imagine that, shit like that can ruin your entire career/life.

As for you losing your modship, I hadn't been around for long so I didn't have an opinion. I thought it was appropriate back then, but that's really not a particularly qualified opinion.

I can understand that. I can't tell you the number of times my comments have been pulled out of context or misinterpreted. But I also understand that this is the risk I take for being in positions of extreme visibility, and that with that knowledge comes the personal responsibility and being a little more careful about what you say in public. You get paid more money, it's worth measuring your words a bit.

I think he's confusing the subset of GAF that is actually like "FUCK YEAH HE GOT FIRED" with.. y'know, the rest of us. The collective bit is quite a stretch.

This is my issue. The people that did revel in this won't listen to anyone: they are clearly fools, idiots and scumbags. A law unto themselves.

So, Cliff, why are you wasting words on them? They already hate you because they're already so full of hate, and any rational you employ can't have any effect on the irrational. The more conscientious of us here deserve better than to be lumped together with the riff-raff, and you deserve better than to waste time doing said lumping.

If you see anyone who is guilty of doing the things you accuse us as a collective of doing, then give them the exact amount of attention their primary school antics deserve: zero.

Why do you even care what CliffyB thinks? Who cares?

I'd be more annoyed with his ramblings if I actually gave a shit.

I can't be the only one that didn't know Evilore's real name?
Me too. Just found this with Wayback Machine:

NeoGAF.com goes live!

Since the prospect of an independent GAF became a reality in 2004, we've undergone a slow, steady restructuring. We were formerly tied to the Gaming-Age news site, and had little need for a landing page of our own, but over time this need became apparent.

Now, with the birth of NeoGAF LLC and its associated properties, we've become aggressive in our desires to clean up our lingering problems in presentation and site loading speed, while also completing the community dynamic with associated relevant content. We'll be adding additional hardware in May to handle our ever-increasing traffic, we've designed a new logo to go along with our new look, and as you can see we've added a proper front page to the site.

Whereas the community grew apart from our former front page over the years, eventually becoming irrelevant to most GAFers, the NeoGAF front page will offer quality content by GAFers and for GAFers, including industry and media insights by some of our famous (and infamous) members. We're a totally independent entity with no hidden agendas and no PR contacts to fondle, so we hope you'll enjoy what the front page has to offer in that regard.

Besides these articles, we're also going to be running special contests and tournaments for the NeoGAF community. The community holds a large base of competitive gamers, and we aim to get you involved beginning in the very near future.

All of us at the NeoGAF team hope you enjoy these new features.

History right there!
