Here's hoping it's good! Though I fear Kosinski may be the next Zack Snyder... (ie, a director who's extremely gifted in the visual department but severely lacking in the writing department) which would bode ill for Oblivion since Kosinski wrote it. Oh well, fingers crossed!

I loved it, but maybe because it's been used in every other TV show and commercial, I can recognise the tracks from a mile away now, which I don't think will be the case with this.
As somebody who only watched the very first trailer and then went on blackout, I will say that the first trailer spoiled way too fucking much. So god help you if you watched the other trailers.
Anyway, there is some absolutely beautiful imagery on display in the film. Kosinski has an absolutely fantastic eye and all the practical sets and props/vehicles work a treat. There is a huge Portal vibe going on through this film in terms of the aesthetic he's gone with. Spheres and polished white surfaces illuminated by some such color.
Cruise was in total John Anderton mode in this film. He was good and brought all the energy you expect him to, but it's ultimately Tom Cruise. It was the first time I found myself wishing it wasn't Cruise, despite him turning in a great performance. Because I've seen it before. The other supporting players did their jobs well enough.
The narrative is rife with stock sci-fi cliches - which I wouldn't mind if there had been more time paid to developing Cruise's character, because what we ultimately get is a lot of intimate time spent with a character that feels ripped straight from a comic book.
And while the action scenes are very well shot and framed and cut, none of them are particularly exciting in narrative terms. And boy oh boy do they get repetitive. Most of the action sequences feel like the ones that preceded them.
The score was great in some parts and completely overbearing in others. I'm a big fan of M83 as well. The opening tracks do indeed sound like they're inspired by TDK for some odd reason. M83 never knew when to pull back and give us something subtle.
Overall I'd say it's worth checking out for the visuals and sound design alone. It's a very pretty picture, but it's not going to leave a lasting impression beyond your normal run-of-the-mill blockbuster.
Now that I've watched trailer 2 & 3 and have seen how much they spoiled, I'm going to go ahead and avoid the new Man of Steel trailer when it hits, along with every other anticipated release.

I was considering it, but decided I needed to see a little more. Now I'm more than happy to wait. There have been so many fucking trailers in the last year that have flat out blown entire movies.
I'm looking at you, Prometheus trailers.
I will now and forever stick to my rule of only watching the first theatrical trailer.
I have developed a skill of glazing over during trailers at the cinema. I manage to get the impression of the film, but avoid processing any details which could be important to the story.
That being said, from what I saw of Oblivion trailers, it is annoying that
you know Morgan Freeman is going to be turning up sooner or later, and the longer they leave it, the more you start to learn that there must be a twist more or less like what actually happens.
I haven't seen it yet but all of this spoiler/trailer discussion has me curious about how much of the movie has been spoiled for me.
Without spoiling, roughly how far into the film does Morgan Freeman appear? Same question regarding
Olga Kurylenko's crash
and
"We are no longer a good team (paraphrasing)"
. Those three elements have been pretty fundamental to every bit of promotion but I don't have a sense of how much that actually spoils (I assume a lot).
I got the soundtrack, might give it a listen later. I'm not sure whether to be excited for the movie, though. Tron Legacy did a lot right but wasn't quite engaging enough.
Boxoffice.com predicts a $45M opening against $120M overall. I think that's impossibly optimistic. My guess is $30M-$40M opening weekend. I think $40M would be a big victory.
Opening weekends:
Jack Reacher: $15M (though had a relatively stronger first 10 days due to Christmas)
Looper: $20M
Total Recall (2012): $25M
Prometheus: $51M
Rise of the Planet of the Apes: $54M
Not great. Some neat ideas, but very poorly executed with terrible character development throughout and some very predictable plot points. There are some twists that caught me by surprise and the ending is pretty interesting in what it alludes to, but yeah...not great.
Some great cinematography though. Really great, soundtrack is decent too.
Saw it yesterday - so spoilers below. It's an average film, with a plot that does not make much sense, a script full of scifi tropes and some wooden acting from the supporting cast... but overall it works and I enjoyed it. For reference I loved Tron Legacy (I recognise it's problems however) and an even bigger m83 fan (who for the most part feel kind of wasted)
If you want to see the best thing this movie has to offer then click here. dont worry, it's spolier free. I feel they kind of wasted m83, the piece i linked above is used in some silly floating underwater pool at night scene - while very cool, it does not live up to the grand and epic scope this song demands.. I imagined awesome vistas and cool cinematography during this segment and it really let me down.. anyway.
The movie makes no sense, SPOILERS
Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, kind of feel like he's in this movie just to be revelent. He dosent do a bad job and plays the part fairly well, expect when
his wife is talking to him, the dialogue so was stilted and weird, it was like two people talking about a relationship but actually have never been in one ever - it was odd.
The movie does have some great shots and it's such a shame things like plot get in the way
So instead of discussing all the problems with movie at length, I'm going to list some of the major issues for me:
- Morgan Freeman was wasted
- Why were the aliens harvesting the planet ?
- Why did they need a repair man to fix fallen drones ?, clearly they had about 100 million spares in the ship
- WHY did the humans dress up like aliens and act like dogs/animals during the library shootout ? wouldn't helping Jack be one of their primary concerns
- Clones! vadernoooooo.gif. Actually this movie handled it OK.. thankfully they didn't do the whole I'm the real Jack stuff and it moved on fairly quick.
- You want to spend the rest of your days living in this tent that has like, zero walls and no protection? kay Im going back to sky loft
- How do these two people who live together in isolation even like one another ? hell one dosent even leave the sky loft like ever ! I suppose cabin fever and pizza boxes would ruin the super clean look of the apartment.
- How do they keep the apartment so shiny ?
- HOW did the plane .. thing not have an connection to the mother ship like the drones ?
The trailers gave the whole movie away too, so yeah. I hope Tron 3 can live up to expectations... with a score from.. the chemical brothers ?

Back from IMAX with mixed impressions about the narrative and emotional connections between characters. Exposition and forced dialogue ruined the beginning of the movie. It did not feel right. The middle was a drag as well.
I am not sure if Tom Cruise was the right choice for the main character. Fassbender would be more appropriate for a role like this (or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Andrea Riseborough was decent, but her character wasn't exactly likeable. Kurylenko and Freeman were great. They saved the movie for me.
I loved the set design and cinematography. Action sequences were riveting and well paced. The ideas in this film are not exactly original, but they work pretty well together. Plot holes are apparent only by the time you get back home and think about it a little.

I agree with most of that, a film that is seemingly easy to pick apart yet is overall quite enjoyable.
One additional problem I had, in addition to yours,
is to do with the timings of the film. I know it is Sci-fi etc... I'm not expecting it to be a true representation of human future, but it seems to relate back to a lot of common 'modern day' references, the music, the landmarks, the flashbacks seemed like standard modern day, and the whole Superbowl thing which went over my head as a Brit... Anyway, with all that, why was the Titan mission in 2017, with Delta sleep etc...? Why not just push all the dates back 50 years? I guess that it could be used as a device to make the twist seem more interesting - you are wondering why we have these awesome plane things and flying pyramids in 50 years time, then it turns out they are alien, we didn't actually have them.
One more thing to add, did anybody see it in a relatively busy screening? There was a fair few in mine, and I thought there was an air of impatience and annoyance at the film from others, quite a few people (very annoyingly) quickly flashing their phones for the time, more people than usual going to the toilet, shuffling etc...? Though I quite enjoyed the film, I got a feeling that others weren't really in to it. That might just be because it was busier than most films I see though, and people are just annoying.
So many spoiler tags -- so enticing to click on them. Been looking forward to this ever since Kosinski announced he was shopping the script around right after TRON Legacy released. I still consider that one of my favorite sci-fi movies of the last five years. No idea why, but it just hit that note for me at the right time. Hoping for good things. The polarizing opinions are a little troublesome, but it seems to be a similar reaction to TRON.

yep, i saw it opening day at 6pm showing (orange wednesdays woo) and people starting shuffling in the last third. then when the credits hit they pretty much shot to the exit
it's quite a slow film, i see it all the time for other similarly paced movies

The action scenes in TRON were really terrible as well (oh god, the club scene). I was hoping that he would have improved this aspect. Definitely going to check it out as soon as I can based on the rest of the positives I've seen mentioned.
Just saw the movie in Imax. Man, what a beautiful movie. Sound and cinematography are one of a kind. I still think that Tron:Legacy looks more awesome, but just because it was neon and stuff. Music is amazing in both. Not much action, but it looks great.
Overall, great flick. Story is simple, yet entertaining and Tom Cruise is cool. Loved the "inside of plane" shots. Give Kosinski Oscar for such stuff.
I just got back from seeing it. I really, really enjoyed it. Absolutely beautiful looking film. And I don't necessarily agree with some of the plot flaws pointed out by others in this thread.

It was okay. I pretty guessed most of the plot after the first trailer so it wasn't as surprising as I was hoping.
I liked the way the
alien AI used a species that is perfectly adapted to its own environment to invade and nullify the native inhabitants. It seems like a very efficient way of doing things.

Aliens harvest planet for minerals (water or whatever) probably doing this to many other planets. They need humans to do the maintenance as a easy work force. Better than robots ? Not sure. hey it's a movie. Why maintaining drones and not sent the one from the diamond station ? Because the purpose of harvesting is to be independent : if the slaves work force can fix your drones, you don't have to spare them. So you can be more profitable before calling more assets from motherbase or mother planets.

-Played straight, lack of humour
-Visually nice
- Likes it a lot more than Tron Legacy
- First hour not bad...as a 3 character drama. When it works best is between Risborough and Melissa Leo
- Starts to lose its way
Saw it yesterday in IMAX and loved the movie.
I loved the white design/look of the movie and the solitary, lonely feel of the first hour of the film. The soundtrack was great, Kurylenko is still one pretty lady, Riseborough not bad either, Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise.
