Earthbound Coming to Wii U Virtual Console in NA / Europe

Didn't this game have a lot of copyright issues? Have they been solved?

That’s the question – it’s quite possible certain parts of the music/visuals have been changed.

Which in turn, will keep the SNES copies high. Not crazy high as they are now, but still not that low, due to it being the ‘pure/original’ version. Potentially.

No 3DS? Oh well. I plan to get a WiiU eventually, and this will justify the purchase when that time comes.

Portability would be nice, though.

Good but all 3 coming to VC on wiiu would have been better. Especially since it would mean an actual way to get 3 without having to import than use fan translation on it.

There was some speculation that there were many, but recently an internal source revealed it was really just three. http://earthboundcentral.com/2012/07/earthbounds-specific-legal-issues/

It's going to be interesting to play this VC release and see if there's any actual changes or if Nintendo just decided to put out the original.
Strange, I recall reading a website that showed many things that could have brought legal trouble if the game was re-released without any modifications. I can't access the site you posted from work, so I'll check it when I get home.

Anyway, this is great news. I don't own a Wii U, but if I did I'd get this game just to see why everybody seems to love it so much.

Soooo you advocate piracy, then?

Nope. Im saying there's far more manageable and cheaper ways to obtain it. Hell, a used copy and a SNES would cost less than forking over whatever amount of money for a WiiU just to play one 16 bit RPG. I mean if you can afford it and need it that bad, then rock on and splurge. I myself could never justify spending close to 300 bucks for a game that is over 20 years old, no matter how "classic" it is.

About time! I still have my original cart, but I might fire it up again when this comes out to take part in all the LTTP threads that will pop up.

I mean, that's awesome, but where are the new games? (for Wii U)

Believe you me - I would take some new games for my Wii U, but between Monster Hunter, NSMBU with my wife, and now Earthbound, the system is justified. New stuff is welcome, though!

That being said, I'm still in awe that this is finally happening.

Lol, no. Original Earthbound costs a leg, maybe even more.
NOA is acknowledging Mother, it's a landmark moment.

Okay, not really, but it's nice to see.

Yeah. Buy it them, maybe they'll release Mother 3 officially here and maybe we can get Mother 4 one day...
we won't :(

Well, Wii U purchase validated now. I cried throughout the second half of the announcement. I hope it's not altered.

The power of the Miiverse. Actually beat this game through the Japanese Famicom 30th anniversary VC campaign last week. Really cool game. Good to see that more people will be able to check it out.

Except I do now (well, when I get a Wii U).

You don't get the cartridge which has the inflated value, you get a license to play an emulated version on the Wii U. I know we aren't supposed to condone emulation on GAF but come on, this game has been readily available in its original form since the first set of geocities web pages popped up in '98.

Earthbound was one of my favourite SNES games when it came out, but the reaction in this thread is kind of pathetic. It's sad that Nintendo can just barf out nostalgia and people will lick it up like a pack of salivating hyenas.

Yeah but the prices are massively inflated. You know how many copies of that game were made? Millions. It sold like shit and there was a shitload of leftovers. Collectors and sellers sell it at astronomical prices because they know you all will suck it up and drain your wallets for it because you think it's so incredibly rare when it really isn't.
