Earthbound Coming to Wii U Virtual Console in NA / Europe

The only way I would have been more shocked is if they had announced Mother 4, developed by Monolith Soft.

Can't wait to legally own and play this game for the first time. Next up: Mother 3, just hire the fan translators and make that translation official.

Seriously, Nintendo should reach out to Tomato and the Fangamer crew for Mother 3DS... Well, a guy can dream. This is more than fantastic enough news though. I'll always love my SNES cartridge, but this is so great.

I guess Nintendo really was reading all those Club Nintendo surveys I would leave with comments about adding Earthbound to the VC for NA/EU. Very excited about this one! I am hoping no significant changes are made though. Can't wait!

I liked how they explicitly mentioned the people complaining in the Japanese Mother community.
So if you want Mother 1 and 3, you know where to "show your support". ;)

Haha I'm laughing so hard right now. I mean congrats to people who are excited by this, but I'm laughing over how sad it is.

It's really not that sad - this is a HUGE announcement. Being excited for this release is no different from people being excited for another port/remake/etc on any other platform.

We need a version of this with Iwata's face plastered on instead of the cowboy...

I remember hearing rumers about this a few months ago, and I'm so glad it's true. Now I don't have to spend $300 for a copy of the game.

Well, I guess technically I do since I need a wii u now, but I was planning on getting one anyways.

I wonder what changes will be coming to the title in the way of music. Since music clearly borrowing from the Beatles was the reason it was being held back from western release, I imagine they made some changes.

LOL I was waiting for this.

250+ dollars for a 20 year old RPG that can be nabbed in minutes via emulation

L O fucking L bro(s)

...

So basically anything released on Virtual Console.. or PSX games on PSN.. should be ignored because you can pirate it?

Aw, man, I just bought this on eBay ._.

I bought a copy a while back for $100, but I'm still psyched. VC's great and all, but it's got nothing on physically putting the cartridge in your SNES.

Now, if they go and put EVO on VC, then I'll be a little pissed. Damn thing was $220.

Yeah and I remember thinking to myself "oh cool, I guess" for those. I didn't lose my shit like it was a sequel made in the style of the old games or anything.
People have been clamoring for this game for years now, ever since it became really expensive in cart form and there were no alternatives for purchase. The over seas fan base has been building and building and there have been many movements to get Nintendo to acknowledge it.

Never mind the fact that Europe actually NEVER got to play the game.

This is like if NA got Terranigma after all these years, but even sweeter.

It's not a mindblowing new Wii U game but for Mother/Earthbound fans it's an exciting announcement. I wonder if the game will receive a Wii Shop Channel release as well. In any case, Wii U owners will be able to play on the Gamepad and participate in the Miiverse community so that's pretty damn cool as well.

Was Mother 3 ever actually translated by Nintendo? You'd think with the NES one being done they'd release it at some point, but I didn't know about part three?

It's a great announcement because 1) It's a great game, and 2) It's a possible stepping stone.

The only thing that puts a severe dampen on it for me is the system choice. I may have actually finally bought something on my 3DS digitally for the first time, but so far this game is all Nintendo has shown me for the Wii U this year. This is not nearly enough for me to buy yet another new Nintendo system that has a lack of third party support and gets first party games whenever Nintendo feels like bothering. :\

And no, Mother 3 has never been done officially in english. Don't think Mother 1 was either, so this was the only real candidate to "test the waters", if this is what this is.

Mother 3 never had an official translation. Only a (really amazing) fan translation. So if it ever does see a release, it'll require a lot of effort on Nintendo's part.

oh goodness, I thin k im about to cry

i want all of you assholes to buy this goddamn game so theyd be willing to release 1 & 3 to the west

It's pretty cool how much Nintendo has been listening to what people have been saying on Miiverse. Swapping the VC releases from 50->60hz versions, dropping the crazy late hour restrictions on mature games and now bringing Earthbound to VC in the west.

As the game never got an original release in the EU it'll be good to see what the fuss is all about.

You guys love to try and be masters at putting words in other peoples' mouths. I'm saying there are less pricier ways to play the game as opposed to dumping 300 bucks on an entire game system for its first "killer app" that is over 20 years old.

Theres a Mom n Pop store that has it being sold with no dust cover for 75 bucks down here. Couple that with a used SNES or one of those three in one systems and BAM, you've saved yourself some dollhairs.

So? Good for you for not losing your shit but many people did back then, imagine someone going into those threads and post "lol 10 year old game getting distribution is news, how sad"...

Your trolling is transparent. Do you even know what Earthbound is about?

As someone who has played Earthbound, I would lower my expectations to those jumping in for the first time.
I agree. Hype kills MOST games, so it would certainly do Earthbound a disservice.

That said, the game is still phenomenal and charming. For those who have never experienced it before, it's one of the more unique RPG experiences out there in terms of story, aesthetic, and writing. There are even some refreshing aspects to combat that you can't really get elsewhere.

Basically, EB is not just another WRPG or JRPG; it's refreshing in its presentation. It's not as dynamic as, say, the Mario and Luigi RPGs in terms of gameplay but it's got charm up the wazoo.

Mother 3 wasn't. There is a full translation out there that fans did though that could be bought I think. Is it weird they never released the original NES game on the VC with it being the one that was translated and then shelved. I don't think there are any issues with it. All work has been done on it.

Really? You mean it can be played at native res (2x nearest neighbor would also work, I guess) instead of being nastily stretched out and filtered?

Can anyone confirm this?

i dont think so

im just saying, i tried getting into VC on the wiiU by purchasing FZero. There are no screen options at all, none

But when you look at it on the screen, it has the large black bars on the sides (which is OK and what i want because i believe in maintaining OAR and its a 4:3 source) however there are also small black bars on the top and bottom where the image is not filling the screen vertically

no excuses for that IMO

on my PS3/Vita i have all sorts of screen options

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that your experience in finding even a boxless copy of Earthbound is an exception, not the rule.

What's ridiculous is that this release could potentially sell the system. It's pretty cool, but damn, really?
I don't think it will sell systems by itself. But, it'll make any Nintendo/Earthbound fan more likely to purchase the system eventually. It's merely one more reason to own a Wii U, but I completely agree that buying the system just for this game is silly.

The thread shitting in here is fucking ridiculous.

This is great news.

you act like there doing us a favor and we cant complain about legitimate faults? Oh hey thanks for buying this $350 system so instead of a solid native library be grateful we are packaging these old ass roms and charging you, its EARTHBOUND after all

i would agree the news is great if the emulators had some customizations besides remapping buttons

"What's ridiculous is that other people value things differently than I do".

I haven't seen many people saying they're buying a system for this, just general excitement about the release, and you're making the irrelevant point that a copy of the cart might cost you less than a Wii U if you can find one without a dust cover at a local shop.
