Is this the Earthbound game that people keep begging for or an earlier one? I thought they couldn't release this in the west.

It is a good game, but I tend to agree. The game didn't sell very well in North America, I don't understand where the hype comes from.
It will probably sell 5-10k units on eShop and go long tail after that. This is a case where several hundred persistent and highly vocal fans banded together to make something happen and I'm happy for them. Good on Nintendo for listening and finally agreeing to make the changes necessary to see a reissue outside of Japan.

We can then all band together when we want shit from Nntendo! lol Maybe we can even get someone fired from Nintendo. Like say E3 underwhelms because Nintendo don't do much for the Wii U...we can get someone's head lopped off for such a disgraceful showing...that they'd have to do a 2 hour long Nintendo Direct to make amends.

Don't be silly, that's far too logical.
It's Mother 2, people begged for Mother 3 too, but that would be significantly harder to release because there isn't an official translation.

what I'm saying is people aren't paying hundreds for Earthbound carts just to play them. It's a collector item. The game coming out on the VC won't change that.
I'm still waiting patiently for a Demon's Crest (never played this as a child) downloadable game release because the cartridge is friggin $70.

An old ass game that is ridiculously expensive and has never been released in Europe? Damn right.
It's one of the best games ever made that a substantial portion of gamers have never been able to experience.
There is reason for excitement. I couldn't care less, personally, but even Nintendo acknowledging that fans in the west want more EarthBound is a significant event.
Chrono Trigger's price dropped after it was re-released, and still hasn't made it back up to its old price. It's happened in the past.
No one's saying EB will be worthless now, but a $200 average is absolutely ridiculous. Prices have bumped up considerably this past year. If this brings it down to sub-$100 like it was around a year ago, that''d be just fine by me.
We'll see.

In my club nintendo surveys, I have pleaded for Xenoblade for US and Earthbound for VC (even though I have it on SNES). I'm 2/2
I will make a plea in the F-Zero VC for a WiiU version.
