Earthbound Coming to Wii U Virtual Console in NA / Europe

Will Nintendo release the first NES game too?

They did release some Japanese only games on the Wii VC, such as SM2.

Even though the NES game has more text, than those other previously released Japanese games, Nintendo already has a translated version of it sitting in a vault somewhere.

I remember when people thought Miiverse was just a gimmick that would be good for nothing that a good old fashioned forum can't do.

Now look what it's brought us. PAL users are finally getting 60hz games. Earthbound is finally getting released on Virtual Console. Fucking Earthbound.

I fully expect the F-Zero Community to get a rush of buzz and for Nintendo to do a new game.

What if Mother 3 comes out to the Wii U as an import once the GBA VC is up and running and the Wii U outsells the PS4 and Durango because of it?!?!?!

lol. just kidding that would never happen

Good thing for those who wanted to play it without having to spend hundreds of dollars on it.
Well, you still have to since nobody owns a WiiU.

Sure wish the Wii, WiiU and 3DS stores were linked like Sony's =[

Now I hope all of the people that have been fighting for this over the years actually pony up. It's easy to say "I'd spend $200 on this!", but spend nothing when it comes out.

In assuming it'll be $8.

$8 dollars.

C'mon people.

See above.

If this sells well I could see them dragging it out the vault

Yep. The three specific legal issues, which are miniscule in the grand scheme.

Hippy Theme (based somewhat on a Chuck Berry song)
Skyrunner Theme (which is not based on anything but apparently sounds too much like a song by The Who)
The name "Dali's Clock." Which can be changed to "____ Clock" pretty easily.

I wonder if these will be edited at all, or if they were decided as not being true legal issues.

People always mention these three examples, but the music that plays in Moonside is, in its entirety, a sample of Ric Ocasek's Keep on Laughing: http://www.whosampled.com/sample/vi...a-Moonside Swing_Ric Ocasek-Keep on Laughin'/

To that one dude saying this means nothing, no one actually cares that Earthbound can now be bought legally. People care because Nintendo is now 100% acknowledging Earthbound exists.

This opens up a world of possibilities, like that a possible Mother 4 would now actually come here. And that Smash 4 may focus more on Earthbound/Mother elements now that the series isn't only officially relevant to one country.

I remember seeing stacks and stacks of eartbound at stores when nobody was buying it even at 75% discounts. I think they eventually tossed them in the dumpster.

By end of year. What could they be waiting for. Will there be a Miiverse explosion if little things are changed. I'd like to see them go all out with a "come and get us, we're NOA" and change the Sky Runner into the Sky Walker and other things.

Also the whole music sample thing. How come Rick Astley or whoever hasn't taken down Yosori Mitsuda over Robo's Theme yet? I guess its more amusing that people who play Chrono Trigger these days are like "I'm being...rickrolled?" when they get to that bit.

Given what Kirby's Adventure might show us...getting 60Hz games as long as there is not a translation into a European language. The fact Kirby was also sloopily optimised (making kirby move at 6/5 speed relative to his enemies) is just convieniant but the German translation (which is probably Moyse work so full of dirty innunendos and pop culture references) is probably what did it.

Well, maybe Miiverse will make them regret that choice again...

Good news for SNES collectors as well. Those ridiculous second hand prices will take a tumble down to more reasonable levels now.

I hope so. I was at a local game shop just yesterday that had a copy of Earthbound that was priced at $199, cart only. I want to get the game for my collection but I just can't justify spending that much on it.

Please forgive my dumb question since I've never played anything from this series, am I supposed to have played the first game in order to fully appreciate the second one?

Is there the first one available to buy the first game for NDS/3DS/Wii/Wii U?

Very exciting for me. EB is easily my favorite game of all time, and it has been since I first played it in 1995 after renting it and seeing it in the Donkey Kong Land issue of Nintendo Power.

I've only ever owned it once, and sold it when I nuked my retro collection years back.

Not really. The first one didn't age as well either.

Sorry but to the mass market having the game in your language is more.important than 60hz,

So why can't they put a firm date on this, like say "today", if it's already been translated?

Watch them re-do all the music due to "copyright issues" as one final FU to fans.

Or worse yet, watch it go up completely unaltered. Then you'd wonder why the radio silence for the past 7 years.

No 3DS eshop by any chance? Just Wii u? Just want to make sure.
It's likely Wii U first. 3DS hasn't even gotten SNES games yet, right? So maybe once/if SNES appears on 3DS, Earthbound will appear somewhere down the line.

I wonder what Nintendo will do in regards to the Wii VC. Will they discontinue new releases and move completely to Wii U? Will they simultaneously release EB and other games for Wii and Wii U VC?

I do think that Wii U VC releases on the eShop should coincide with the Wii Shop Channel. Then again, most games releasing on the Wii U VC will have already been on the Wii Shop. Games like Earthbound are an exception where they are seeing first light on the Wii U instead, rather than being put on the Wii beforehand.

The only reason I'm concerned about the Wii Shop Channel is because that's where A LOT of players are. Not everyone has upgraded to Wii U, obviously. A game like EB would sell much better if it was also made available the Wii-owning audience.

I see. I wouldn't know because I don't own a 3DS *yet* but when I purchase one, it was something I would've liked on the system.

Regardless, this is awesome news.

Not a chance in hell.

If it sells well enough who knows? We can have a Sin & Punishment scenario here.

I feel like buying it just to support the fanbase, RPGs aren't my thing but this game is just so odd, is this the one where you fight hippies? And rats attack you with curse words? Heh the whole thing is so bizarre I'm really intrigued.

I have heard SOOO much about this game
Now I can finally find out if the love for this game is warranted.

Finally I'll be able to know what's the deal with this game praised by everyone!
I decided on no digital purchases on Nintendo stores until they'll set up an account system, but this will be an exception!

My point has more to do with Shigesato Itoi than sales of the Virtual Console version.

But yes, please play it. I don't know the impact it will have on new players today, but I appreciated it in the mid-90s for being a Dragon Quest style RPG that completely turned the genre on its head and not only eschewed conventional tropes, but parodied them. It's a magical game and I'm glad that it exists.

I am a better person for having played it.

I'm excited to read the backlash of people judging a 1994 RPG based on today's standards.

Of course, it's far, far better than most everything released since then.

The only problem would be with people expecting it to be like "modern RPGs" - that is, full of movies and flashy animation, voices, action, and all that sort of nonsense that just makes games today worse.

OH MY GOD

Earthbound appeals to a fairly hardcore niche, its far better for Nintendo to keep it Wii u exclusive and gives an extra incentive for people to upgrade

To be fair, Earthbound has since gotten significant exposure via Super Smash Bros, so while it's reasonable to assume it won't do gangbusters, it's still likely to do better than it did in its initial release.

With Its now almost mythical status I could easily see it selling more now than it did then

Long term, perhaps. It's not unreasonable to expect a few hundred thousand sales between NA and EU a few years out, but I don't think it's going to be the mega system seller people are hyping it up to be. The hundreds of hardcore fans will be elated and it might sell a few consoles here and there, but not enough to make a meaningful impact.

So why can't they put a firm date on this, like say "today", if it's already been translated?

NOA has refused to allow release of the game due to copyright issues and EAD has resisted making the necessary changes to the game for years. The compromise justified the announcement, but I'm sure there is work to be done, decisions to be made and lots of back and forth with lawyers and developers before the game is ready for purchase on the eShop.

Don't know if you're even still active / unbanned, but if so consider this my request. :)

Ha, what a thing to remember. Well hey, I'll ask for one too! Though you can't actually gift things on the Wu shop, which makes the whole thing moot.
