How bad is this "Mexican" Joke (Racist?)

Imagine you're a Mexican-American, and basically all your childhood life in American schools with other races, every time anything remotely Spanish or Mexican is brought up, some people look at you. Or people make stupid jokes where they talk in pidgin-Mexican where they add an -O or say 'el' in front of every word. Or tell other, worse Mexican jokes. And figure "because you're a Mexican, you must have heard them them all. " I mean after a few years of that, and then not having to deal with it. And then someone makes a spanish name joke to break the ice? He just got the shoulder.

And to you guys who think it's not 'racist', just because you're not offended doesn't mean him being offended and thinking it's racist would be wrong.

Don't ban me please. This is a yo-mama joke I heard as a young man:

"Yo mama is like a brick. Flat, dirty, and gets laid by Mexicans."

What do you call Mexican basketball?

Juan on Juan

What do you call a bunch of Mexican stoners?

Baked Beans

How many mexicans does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Juan

As a Mexican...I don't find that one offensive. Shit...I don't even consider this one offensive:

What do you call a bunch of Mexican's holding hands in a lawn?

You've been warned:
Spicket fence

Well, him being offended is his own reaction, so it can't be "wrong". But him thinking it's racist would most definitely be wrong. Plenty of nameplay jokes have been posted in this thread that demonstrate the ludicrous nature of calling the OP joke racist.

Also, I didn't see anyone arguing:
"I didn't get offended" > "therefore not racist"

That's a rather antagonistic characterisation of the "that's not racist" (ie. everyone but you) crowd's thought process.

Further, the Mexican-American guy in your example's history of highschool teasing/bullying does not change the inherent harmless quality of the OP joke.

I'm not mexican, my name is Juan
pablo
I don't get the joke u.u

Except this one, this one is awesome.

That is hilarious. It could be offensive, if you get offended by stuff like that.

The joke the OP is referencing isn't racist in any way. It's also not funny, so you should probably stop telling it.

From what I've learned, basically everything and anything is racist to a lot of people. Its one of the most abused accusations thrown around because the meaning of the word has been grossly expanded to basically mean anything related to race, bad or not.

As a hispanic I find that joke to be NOT offensive at all but the joke isn't necesarily funny either and probably was offensive for that reason alone.

No way, that joke is hilarious.

For those that don't know: What do you call a guy with a rubber toe?
Roberto

That's the kind of joke I would have invented myself back in like 3rd grade and thought I was a genius for thinking it up. Also, reminds me of South Park, "Do you like fish sticks?"

It probably created an awkward situation when you gasped and right away looked at your Mexican friend for his reaction. I'd be offended that you thought I was offended over some lame ass joke.

This reminds me of that infamous Fark headline after three people drowned:

Two bodies recovered, Juan Moore still missing

(the guy's name was really Juan Moore)

He was probably just mortified by how terrible the joke was. You'd have to completely Americanize the pronunciation for it to work, too. I'd like to hear how the name Roberto implies a nationality in any way, though.

maybe he was mad at the shitty joke. how does that even come up?

The topic of conversations were ridiculous names celebrities give to their kids, and we were going through all the celebs we could think of ..."Apple" "Blanket" Jermajesty" Then we got to "Rocket", which is the name of ... a Mexican director's son Robert Rodriguez: So I simply said how stupid of a name is "Rocket" for a kid, why wouldn't he stick to his roots and name his son something Latin like "Roberto"??

Then I was like "Wait!!.."Robert" "Roberto" that's HIS name, so that wont work.. which at this point triggered my cousin to tell the joke...

the fact that there was a Mexican in the group was total coincidence, and the Joke wasn;t told because of him.

.

That joke isn't even about Mexicans or anything Mexican. It's about the Spanish version of a name. Your friend is too sensitive.

focus less on the 'mexican' and more on the 'other'.

I mean, I'm looking at a pretty clear picture here.

OP, did you even ask your friend? Or are you just feeding the pizza on this one?

That's like an elementary school joke. It's harmless.

Now, those Skippyjon Jones children's books? That shit is horrendous.
