How bad is this "Mexican" Joke (Racist?)

As a Mexican...I don't find that one offensive. Shit...I don't even consider this one offensive:

What do you call a bunch of Mexican's holding hands in a lawn?

You've been warned:
Spicket fence

What do you call a guy with a spade on his head?

Doug

If the Roberto and Juan jokes are racist, then so is the one I just used.

It's simple wordplay.

ok so retarded, and then arguably racist. But undisputedly retarted.
I'm using all the power of my brain and I still cannot conceive any argument that makes the joke racist.

^ That's the joke, I am not a Mexican so it's not fair or hard for me to say I am not offended, I still think it's a pretty tame joke, and you must be really uptight to be offended as a Mexican.

But since the Joke uses people form a specific nationality, it could be deemed as "racist"?!? but I still don't buy it though.

a) It's not specific, it could be an Italian, Portuguese or Spaniard too.
b) Would a joke using an English name be racist?

i'd have to be wasted out of my mind or under the age of 10 to find that funny. barely a "joke", much less being anywhere near racist.

What do you call a guy with no arms or legs in the pool?
Bob

What do you call a guy with no arms or legs on the wall?
Art

No, not racist. I mean, come on, Roberto is hardly a name that I'd relate to Mexico in the first place.

Don't know the joke but usually jokes that single out and make fun of one's ethnicity coming from a complete stranger aren't funny and make the person telling it look like an ignoramus.

Wrong! don't jump into those type of conclusions please, the topic of conversations were ridiculous names celebrities give to their kids, and we were going through all the celebs we could think of ..."Apple" "Blanket" Jermajesty" Then we got to "Rocket", which is the name of ... a Mexican director's son Robert Rodriguez: So I simply said how stupid of a name is "Rocket" for a kid, why wouldn't he stick to his roots and name his son something Latin like "Roberto"??

Then I was like "Wait!!.."Robert" "Roberto" that's HIS name, so that wont work.. which at this point triggered my cousin to tell the joke...

the fact that there was a Mexican in the group was total coincidence, and the Joke wasn;t told because of him.

That joke is great

such a dad joke.

As a mexican I'm deeply offended.

Let me play you the gif of my people

Lame joke but only someone desperately in search of drama would consider it racist.

No way, that joke is hilarious.

For those that don't know: What do you call a guy with a rubber toe?
Roberto

That is something a five year-old would find funny. Your mexican friend may be mentally unstable if he got offended by that.

This is how the joke is actually told.

"What do you call a Mexican with a rubber toe?"

Rowwwww (pronounce like a row boat) bear-toe.

You have to deliver the "Raaaawwwww-berrrrto" with a thick Latin American/Spanish accent.

I could see why it may not be pleasing to some.

But really I think it's a tame and light hearted joke.

And for Juans, it's not another Juan joke.

We were at the bar last night and my cousin made a joke towards my Mexican buddy, I don't think he was pleased, it created an awkward situation. I kind of felt bad for both parties... but now come to think of it, is it really bad? Are we too sensitive or is the joke legitimately in poor taste?

It's the "rubber-toe" joke for those who know. Is it racist, GAF?
I see the Juan Memes everywhere on the internet, I guess those are bad too, but this is along the lines of those "Juan" Jokes.

Lock if thread is too controversial or stupid.

You know, I usually find arguments that society is too politically correct to be ridiculous and unconvincing.

But my goodness.

So, a few things here: one, the joke is neither in bad taste nor offensive. It's completely harmless; that might be why it's also not very funny. Two, I think you might be misinterpreting your buddy's reaction (I hope so!). It seems unlikely he was offended by the joke--maybe you worrying over if he might be offended made things awkward? And three, if you think this thread might be too controversial for NeoGAF, you might be miscalibrated as far as what's controversial around here. :P

Well, the thing is, my friend, also my co worker IS from Mexico. He has been in Canada for only a year and half now, he is as Mexican as they come. I work with this guy, actually right next to him, I just don't want any awkwardness while at work, he is a decent guy and we get along very well... The reason I asked GAF about this is for some reassurance, seems like IT IS just as I thought, a very harmless joke...

You know how some cultures interpret Jokes a bit differently than others, I admit I was a bit too self-conscious about this.

The mexican, american and canadian presidents are in a sauna discussing trade and security issues. The smart watch of the american president beeps and he excuses himself "gentlemen, I have to answer this message". The smart phone of the canadian president rings and he excuses himself "gentlemen, I need to take this call". El presidente, feeling left behind, goes to the bathroom and after a few minutes returns with a bunch of toilet papet hanging out of his ass. "gentlemen, I just received a fax".

Take it easy with the tomatoes.

And we are a funny people.

Hell, I laugh at pretty much everything, jokes, racists jokes or not, whatever, Im a laughing dude but this joke is bad, I didn't even chuckled or anything no reaction whatsoever.

If the joke was saying only the word "sombrero" I might actually laugh.

:P

It is a joke that is a lot funnier heard than read, see my explanation in post #86, and what's this "underlay" joke?
