Earthbound Coming to Wii U Virtual Console in NA / Europe

Put your tin foil hats on.

Is there any chance this is a sign Nintendo is making a new Mother/Earthbound? Or maybe sales of this could dictate such a decision? Thoughts?
Well, they may just be looking at the fact people DO want it, they're clearing/cleared the issues, and are now getting it out. Doesn't hurt to try though, if they're not probing the market they WILL be considering what to do if it does exceptionally well. Then again Sin & PUnishment 2 may've deterred them from basing that off of VC again (though it'd probably be easier with an RPG than a rail shooter, which can do very compelling at $10.)

Too bad something like this couldn't be kickstarted. It would be one of the biggest projects on there within hours. So many people seem obsessed with this series, it's fascinatingly cool.

it sucks, but i think shockingalberto said it - the mother 3 fan translation might've killed the prospect of them doing it officially.

and what illegal shit? all i saw were a few sad trolls 19 YEAR OLD GAME HURRRR

Hmm. I'll probably end up being dead wrong but I think with Earthbound being given the green light that its sequel has the best chance its ever had to also get a green light. Even with the fan translation out. My line of thinking is that if enough people who buy Earthbound are aware of the other games existence that they'll take their yelling to Miiverse and perhaps Nintendo will finally give in for those titles too.

Why is it going to take until the end of the year to release this game? It's a glorified ROM for the VC. You would think Nintendo could make it available at anytime, so why wait?

It's possible that they are making a couple of changes to it, or getting it approved on legal grounds in some way.

Or, they're sitting on the game and just waiting for a "good time to release it."

Will this also be on the wii virtual console or is the wii u virtual console different?
The two are different. I'm wondering the same thing though; if it'll be released on both.

Such an overrated title. I can't stand the art style.

But either way it's good for the fans that wanted it.

If I remember correctly, weren't there some copyright/IP/some kind of issues with some of the music being similar to some real life bands or something? And that's why it wasn't rereleased here yet? Maybe they're tweaking some of that stuff.

Fake Edit: here's a link to some info. http://earthboundcentral.com/2012/07/earthbounds-specific-legal-issues/

You would think it should because it's just an snes game but they're probably also hoping it pushes people to the wiiu. :/

I doubt it will be released on the Wii.

I wish it were. Wii has an authentic 240p output, Wii U is HD only.

But let's not pretend Nintendo is doing more than throwing a bone at longtime fans.

Seriously. Earthbound is a good game. I enjoy the subtle psychedelic fight screens, the music (coil snake is my favorite) and its unique charm.

That said, let's gain some perspective people. Megaton used to mean something. This is great news, but it's far from a revolution.

I don't like to pirate anything, but seeing as there was no other viable alternative for years, who was actually waiting for a legal re-release? I mean, it takes all of 5 minutes to get Earthbound up and running on your computer. You can even play it in your web browser, with cloud saves. All I'm saying is that, in the time it took Nintendo to cave-in to fans and digitally release a ROM, you could've played the whole game.

Also, Nintendo isn't exactly a wonderful company that absolutely needs your support. They became stinking rich off a mediocre product that was marketed to consumers as a revolution in interactive entertainment. I'm not shedding any tears for the miniscule amount of money they lose due to piracy of ancient games.

Wouldn't this technically be linking to roms since the site's just a player to load a rom? >_>

And no. Some of us want to support the original developers because we love the game.

Don't confuse a loud small group with an actual large group.

Even if that small group had a lot of money, it's very unlikely it would ever reach very in kickstarter, let alone be one of the biggest ever.

Lots of Kickstarters seem to be driven by enthusiast niches, though.

You think the mainstream was crying out for adventure games or space sims?

Thank you based Nintendo.
Sad seeing it typed out, but this, Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2 are the only reasons I'm going to buy the system at this point.

I still have yet to play through this game so this will be a great opportunity. Still trying to find a decent copy of the SNES version for $200 or under.

Awesome news.

Really glad nintendo is listening to the fanbase. Gives me hope for future titles and more Miiverse discussions.

I'm thoroughly excited to buy this, play through it *again* and participate in the Miiverse community. Easily my tied #1 game of all time. Thank you Nintendo!

I mean, if it does megafuckton numbers, they couldn't possibly ignore it.

Amazing news, day one for me. I've always wanted to play it but the eBay prices are insane. Now, we just need Mother 1/3 translated and we will be in good hands. Make it happen!

All I have are these (and a Mr. Saturn cell phone charm, a Courage Badge keychain, and two Mother 3 Handbooks):

Oh wait, I also had an NES Earth Bound (re?)production cart made:

Where does that place me?

EDIT: I also made this:

Ooh, nice. You're at least third from what I've seen! The NES Earthbound reproduction cart is a nice little flourish too.

Some of us were starting to get worried you weren't around a few pages back, and also there was a reminder about your promise to give free copies. :P

Hahaa, I will absolutely give away copies of Earthbound. The Wii U doesn't do gifting, does it? 'Cause we'll have to come up with a solution to that if it doesn't. I haven't tried gifting on Wii U yet.

Edit: wow, looking back you guys already were calling dibs. I was trying to find the post where I said how many copies I would give out lol. See you saved me the trouble. I'm going to up that quantity to 5 copies, though, instead of 4, with a contest after that for another 5 copies down the road when we figure out a solution to sending gifts on Wii U shop if it doesn't have that ability yet.

Edit 2: So again, guys, mark this post for me (I have a terrible memory) and then PM me when we get a Wii U eshop solution for gifting.

Edit 3: These are the five people who will automatically get a copy ->

Drakken
Tathanen
mantidor
Shaanyboi
terrisus

And I'll have a contest topic also when we figure out the gifting shit

I do believe a good number of people on GAF played this game through an emulator but basically post around the bush, never directly mentioning ROM or emulator, afraid of getting banned.

So Earthbound is in my top 10 fav games of all time, but I never played Mother 3. How good is Mother 3 compared to how amazing Earthbound was?

Mother 3 is a lot more depressing, grotesque and dark. I couldn't say it's as good as, or worse, better than Earthbound or whatever. You just need to play it.

So does this basically mean that all of the hubbub and stress over the copyright issues on the part of the fans was complete BS? And it turns out that Nintendo never brought it over here because they just didn't want to?

It's better. It's overall easier than Earthbound, but it is at least more interesting mechanically (characters' unique skills are more important, buffs and debuffs are back to being useful like they were in the first game, and the combo system is pretty fun). If you were really attached to the urban setting or global travel aspects of Earthbound, or the more open world (Mother 3 restricts what areas you can and cannot go to more than the first two games), you might like it less.

Hopefully now that we know the announcement was for earthbound the mother 3 translation team will put out version 1.2.

Mother 3 is a pretty ambitious game with its primary setting, though. In fact, I've never seen a game quite handle the themes Mother 3 did in quite an effective fashion as I have with what they do to the primary city throughout the game.

Yes and it's their job to do this for us measly customers. Now, on with the Metroid sequel!

Hey, can you play VC games on the pad at different resolutions and/or zooms?

ahhhHHHhhh
I guess they didn't want to sell it for 0.30$.
I wonder what they'll call Mother 3 when it comes here. Earthbound 2?

I'm excited to play this. Also glad Nintendo is coming around. The hype surrounding Mother 3 is incredible, I hope they end up doing a sub and releasing it.

I have been waiting actually.

Also this is a shitty post on so many levels. Really shameful.

I've been waiting as well. I havn't pirated or emulated a game in years, not since my early teens. I doubt we're the only ones. With so many high quality releases on the console front, I havn't felt the urge or need to.

I've always wanted to play Earthbound. The general online attitude towards it has been so inspiring. The comics, fandoms etc. are all in line with some of the best. I live in the UK, and so have never had any legal way (outside of importing) to play this game.

I'm very excited.

I also sort of preferred how Earthbound felt more dark in terms of how abstract and psychological it could get. Mother 3's a far more coherent and dramatic story, but the final game doesn't have anything that touches the final Giygas encounter.

Unless (technically spoilers for M3 I guess?)
you count that scrapped part where Lucas has a mental breakdown over Claus you can find on youtube

I still love both, but they have distinctly different feels to one another. Mother1/E0 is the only game in the trilogy that's blatantly worse.
