For those have trouble imagining a dead man's switch, imagine a grenade with the pin pulled. As long as you keep pressure on the lever, the grenade doesn't go off. Once pressure is released, the lever flies off and the grenade is armed and ready to explode.

It's a switch that completes a circuit when the action is free instead of depressed. It's not rocket science.
