Bloomberg: Nintendo to announce 18.7 Billion Yen loss for the fiscal year

So for anyone still even slightly confused about this:

These are Nintendo's projections potentially determining Iwata's "retirement" if his commitment doesn't fall through:

1. One hundred billion JPY ($1.068 billion) in operating income (not net income)

2. This one hundred billion JPY will be reflected in the financial report at the end of FY 2014 (for the period from April 1st, 2013 - March 31st, 2014), reported to shareholders ~late April 2014.

3. Changes in the foreign (Dollar, Euro) exchange rate may modify this commitment.

Nintendo has forecasted the following for tomorrow's FY release:

670,000 million JPY ($6.746 billion) profit in net sales

20,000 million JPY ($201.36 million) loss in operating income

20,000 million JPY ($201.36 million) profit in ordinary income

14,000 million JPY ($140.952 million) profit in net income

So Bloomberg is reporting that Nintendo will MEET their thrice-revised FY projections.

Meeting projections = crucial. While it implies a severe lack of momentum, I don't predict that the FY release will impact Nintendo as much as you guys think.

Now, it's up to Iwata to sell shareholders / investors on the future of Nintendo, through Q&As, product roadmaps, and presentations.

He has until March 31st, 2014 to make a 100 billion JPY in operating profit.

Bloomberg, among other analysts currently watching Nintendo, is predicting that Nintendo will fail at this, and only make 70 billion JPY in operating profit.

So they're meeting their goals? Why is everyone in this thread acting like iwata is already dead?

Some people have very little faith in Iwata to be able to meet his FY 2014 commitment thanks to Wii U's non-existent momentum and 3DS's struggling Western sales. 100 Billion Yen in Operating Income presumes a healthy Nintendo.....and we're not seeing a healthy Nintendo at the moment.

But for now, Iwata is safe. Nintendo will very likely meet their FY 2013 projections and everything will be all right for one more year. It's the future that's the issue.

Also, please note that Nintendo's current predictions for tomorrow's release have been modified SEVERAL TIMES, and have been altered dramatically (see the intense transition between operating profit -> operating loss).

Posting a loss is never good, regardless of whether or not the company expected.

It's ALL about the future. That's what matters to investors at the moment.

Yeah married man and dad Satoru Iwata should kill himself because the Wii U is selling poorly. Makes sense.

A lot of people are joking but it's a fucking sick joke.

The joke is the ridiculousness of killing yourself over failing to meet expectations that seems to be quite commonly associated with Japan. Poor taste, sure, but I see avatars that are worse imo.

I'm not marking stuff out of 10. Just stating my view on it.
I always see that stuff as quite horrible and reflects much more on the person making the comment than those they are commenting on.

I don't make a thing of it. As I ignored it earlier. Just wanted someone asking to know what someone was referring to. Though imo, no - no one is saying he should commit suicide or die. Just making what I'd see as comments in bad taste.

Absolutely apt

People sure do take thing seriously when they're enamored with a company and its CEO... :s

Protip: If I make a comment like, "Here's the sword, Iwata."

I don't literally want Iwata to kill himself.

pokemon sells 14m units
mario & luigi sells 4m units
animal crossing sells 5m units
zelda sells 4m units
yoshi sells 3m units
mario golf sells 2m units

at $34.99 a game, that gets them to $1.1b in revenue. say they take 50% of every game sold, that's $550m

on the wii u side:

mario wii u sells 4m
mario kart sells 5m
zelda wwhd sells 2m
pikmin sells 1m

at $60 a game, that's about about $720m in revenue. if they take a similar amount. $360m for the year from those console games. they're still $90m short of the goal, but that can be made up with other stuff.

the problem is, this is an extremely optimistic view. fuck, there aren't even 3m wii us sold to customers, and to do it, they're going to need to spend some money marketing. i really don't see how they do it.

Tomodachi Collection will sell 3-4m. Not to mention, they take a cut of the revenue from every game sold on the systems. Monster Hunter 4 is good for a 3-4m and there will always be surprise hits on their handheld systems -- Smash Bros 3DS could be out this Christmas in Japan and that'd sell at least 2m copies there.

Lovely. Humor is subjective.

Yes and I happen to dislike it. Why is that hard to understand?
These are my views/feelings. Its in a box beside an avatar and username that are mine.

What do you expect me to do? Take a poll and get back to you? I was just stating that I view them in bad taste and the image was vulgar. Thats my subjective view.

Its not a difficult concept.

I'm not sure what people think they'll be getting in Iwata leaving.

Regardless of who his hypothetical successor is, Nintendo's development philosophy isn't changing, at least not as drastically as some seem to think it should.

Eh...maybe? It's certainly not guaranteed, and I'm not sure how Animal Crossing still selling will affect it quite yet.

The fact that you missed the obvious and long used sarcasm of the meme and jest is what's apparently difficult. I'm sorry a cartoon spooked you.

I'm not shocked you reacted to this the way you did considering your fan level on this topic.

And yet you're angry as hell that he has ruined Nintendo, a video game company. Come on.
Dude he doesn't deserve any respect from anyone

What is this

I mean geez some of you really get your feelings hurt when people point out how bad of a leader he's been in the past few years

Its the notion that someone accused members of this forum of wishing Iwata killed himself. That is false.

Yes cuz then we get the REAL NintendoLand

Haha, at least the budgets would be nice and high for a while until he becomes solely a mascot for Disney Land.

Yeah sorry, I misread your post I think or confused it with another.

You seems to have info about Nintendo's inside works to jump to this conclusion.

Jesus Christ, what is with the hostility? Iwata seems like a sweet dude. Also, does anyone actually know what this means in the grand scheme of things? Like, is this a wildly unexpected result? I know Nintendo has billions stashed away, so I can see how this wouldn't even be that big of a deal, if investors have confidence that things will turn around in the coming year. And with the way the 3DS is selling, that doesn't seem unlikely at all.

than you know nothing about the stock market. They were expected to lose more money this fiscal year, they lost less than expected.

That's good

They went from projecting operating income -> operating loss, albeit it met their revised expectations. It's not good news for Nintendo, but it's also not as bad as some people are saying here.

I just want a CEO who actually understands the video game industry.

Iwata doesn't actually seem all that intelligent in this regard.

Also, I don't want a CEO burning through Nintendo's warchest like it's some joke.

So they're meeting their goals? Why is everyone in this thread acting like iwata is already dead?

People saw a big number and ran with it. Also, judging from posts like this:

Another year, another loss and this time a big one. Things don't look good for the future either.

Nintendo NEEDS a major company direction shake up. Iwata, Miyamoto, Shibata, Takeda and Reggie needs to leave.

I'm guessing some people don't quite grasp how yen converts to dollars.

The 3DS gaining steam is the only reason this number isn't far, far worse. Nintendo is hemorrhaging money on the Wii U and they need to sell consoles badly. How they are going to gain any sales momentum with two true next-gen consoles launching this winter I have no idea. Gonna be a dismal Christmas trying to sell against PS4 and Durango. I would hope Iwata is out for pure incompetence in regards to everything Wii U. They need to do a massive rebrand, relaunch it as the Super Wii and slash the price to $149 ASAP. Sure your gonna lose money on every console sold but your not selling any now. Some in people's houses is better than sitting on shelves. This might at least let you sell through your current production. Then fast track your next console. They should be launching a one teraflop home console December of 2015. They either need to get into the modern game sphere or then need become software only outside of handhelds.

The fact that you missed the obvious and long used sarcasm of the meme and jest is what's apparently difficult. I'm sorry a cartoon spooked you.

I got it. I've already stated that. I still saw it as a vulgar joke.
If you want to joke about suicide, make it funny krypt, otherwise its really not worth the comment and just comes off as vulgar.

Am still not sure what on earth you're missing here. In fact I ignored the post; seeing it as stupid. Only linked to it because someone asked.

Nor have I identified as being spooked by it. My only reaction to all this is to reflect badly on your ability to converse with other people, one stupid post won't crucify you but continuous ones and I can only judge you on those.

Its not a difficult concept. You said it yourself - humour is subjective and imo your attempts were unfunny.

It's just hard to think that one man, despite position has so much pull over what people perceive to be Nintendo's greatest failure, when in many cases seeds of these faults (relationship with third parties, lax attitude to hardware, non-conventional approaches) have been there long before Iwata took over.

I think whether Iwata goes or stays we'll see a very, very safe approach from Nintendo in the next few years.

Jesus Christ, what is with the hostility? Iwata seems like a sweet dude. Also, does anyone actually know what this means in the grand scheme of things? Like, is this a wildly unexpected result? You're begging the question.

Investors want growth.

We're seeing shrinkage.

Iwata had lightning strike twice for him and possibly a 3rd time with the 3DS's bright future but the Wii U is really bad at the moment, all the momentum that could have been salvaged from the Wii was long gone. He launched a console that was somehow undercooked and late to the party at the same time. Next time round they should give 3rd parties the console they need to make ports for rather than cutting costs to make room for a expensive gimmick.

You seems to have info about Nintendo's inside to jump to this conclusion.

What can they do though really, their games have established designs that suit a cheaper console targeting a different demographic to the dudebro's main preference, even though he probably used to play Nintendo. There's just not much different they can do I think, not that they really need to target differently for reasons other than a little bit more stability...They should do alright like this anyway imo - will take longer to flourish though.

Tablet-ifying the wii was the best thing they could have done imo but to see a better start they needed the games right off the bat. Wasted opportunity (and loss of fans due to ps4 and economy) but not unsalvageable, at least they have more than last year!

DING DING DING

EDIT: I cannot believe I was drawn into this nonsense. Anyone greatly offended can take it to PMs.

If you think we're arguing over you saying he should commit suicide you need to re-read.
I know your not suggesting that and do not think you'd do such a thing.

A CEO doesn't really typically get to decide he has a year to try and fix problems that have accumulated under their leadership. They serve at the pleasure of the board. Although I recall reading Yamauchi still has huge influence over said board, despite retirement, and as his hand-picked successor he'll probably have this opportunity to try at least.
This literally made me LOL.

That's why I said there's a chance for him to be given the boot tomorrow but it is unlikely. There is no internal candidate that can step up to the plate and replace him, as bad as the 3DS and Wii U launches were. Yamauchi hand picked Iwata, I doubt given the enormous success of the DS and Wii that two bad years will make him give him the boot.

Are you a fan of Nintendo video games and properties?

Sure. What does that have to do with my priorities exactly?

Do you want Disney to own Mario?

Are we just making shit up for fun in this thread?

People were saying the same thing about Vita VS 3DS at this time in 2011. Not saying the turnaround will be the same at all, but, well, the future is far from predictable.

You ever stop and wonder if Nintendo is releasing IP after IP for the 3DS because they finally have a handheld that can handle it? Or is just because they need to meet their goal? The DS didn't have a cluster of Mario games in such a short span of time. And Earthbound? I bet if the Wii sold like shit we would have that game six years ago.

You do realize that all of those games have been in development for a couple of years, right? It's not like they just started developing them yesterday.
