I know this twitter is fake but this news seems to be like a huge joke. People asking for him to resing and now they give him more power.

Lol this will change ....nothing ?

Iwata is there but as long as i don't see so change of direction it doesn't matter on who is flying the damn plane.

But as you say this could mean nothing and things will go as usual.

If you're just looking at the Wii u you're being short sighted and ignoring that the 3DS is killing it right now. Obviously there are missteps with the Wii at the moment but if they can turn it around like the 3DS iwata and Nintendo will be just fine. Anti-consumer mistakes aside Nintendo will be fine and that's all this conversation is about.

If by killing it you mean the 3DS is down year over year, failing to meet projections yet again, and having serious problems selling software, then yes, it's "killing it."

Iwata has no understanding of the Western game market, has no good relationships with Western developers, so this should be *AMAZING*

Ironically amazing if you're a Nintendo fan, just plain amazing if you're not.

I really think Iwata thinks the only problem with the WiiU's state in North America is NOA incompetence. I hope that's not the case.

That's more or less my sense of things as well, though I hope I'm wrong.

Speculation that Kimishima is being groomed to replace iwata is 100% baseless conjecture.

I love that half of GAF was expecting a resignation from Iwata today, and when that hasn't happened it's now time to figure out how this move could presage a resignation at a later date.

Iwata's probably safe for a couple more years at least since Nintendo turned a small profit on paper thanks to the exchange rate changing.

You know it makes sense though, Iwata has made a personal commitment to achieve some incredibly ambitious targets for the upcoming year. Now he's taken the reigns (ALL THE REIGNS) and also very deliberately taken full responsibility. Whatever happens, good or bad, is all on him.

I don't wish anyone ill so I wouldn't be sad to see Iwata spark some astounding turnaround in the next 12 months. I just don't see how he could.

Basically, whether Iwata succeeds spectacularly, implodes abysmally, or just kinda muddles along, it's all going to be glorious fun on GAF.

No, I think quite a few were expecting/hoping for him to step down today. "Half" is exaggerating, though :-)

This was never, EVER a possibility. He merely implied he may resign following next year's fiscal performance, which began on April 1 and doesn't end until April 2014. He won't resign until next April, if he does at all. It all depends on if he meets the 100 billion yen commitment or not.

It'll be funny when Iwata will achieve his 100 billions yen next year.
huh? I have a strong memory of Iwata saying "Please Be Excited"

maybe I'm just remembering wrong.
That's not Iwata, for Iwata it's "Please understand"
Please be excited come from Square Enix.

After the meltdown of this morning news, I see the thing more clearly and I agree with Aquamarine's quote earlier in this thread.

This is probably in preparation of Iwata stepping back from the global president position, between this summer and 2014. Maybe if this fiscal year is doing good he will not retire after all too, but just in case Kimishima will be in Kyoto to take over and Iwata remain in NoA.

The important things are, IMO, that both mens can speak english, and this is important for the global president and NoA CEO positions.

This is exactly what comes to mind. He's proven to be a good executive, just not a good global president. He's done a lot in opening the company up to consumers with Iwata Asks and Nintendo Direct broadcasts, but now the goal is to open up to a new direction. Personally I trust Iwata far more to handle NoA far more than I do some of the other people in place already. This is a really good transition. Of course this won't satisfy the irrational vitriol filled NeoGAF community that wants him thrown through the company doors on his head, but its a sign of things to come none the less.

I think this is great news! Now they should start cloning Iwata and placing him in all management positions. Perhaps it could go further...

Every new Wii U will come with a copy of Super Mario Bros. U and your own live Iwata whom you wiill need to feed and care for. He will daily get you out of bed with his patented "direct to you" encouragement, then spend the rest of the day being your friend and telling you about the great software that will eventually be available on the Wii U.

Then watch you with his arms crossed and a stern expression as you play Super Mario Bros. U for the umpteenth time...

No, seriously, he's a great guy. \. :-) ./

Shareholder approval, eh...but then given the majority of shareholders are Nintendo directors IIRC its a rubber stamp at its finest.

Say, did the new Seamen that was in the works come out yet? I think they should remake it into Iwatamen.

Yes, I'm aware of that, which is why I found it amusing :-)

Why is speculation constantly being mixed in with the facts here? Iwata is assuming the new role in addition to his current role. There's nothing remotely stating that he will be losing his current position as global president in the coming months.

Funny how this wonky interpretation of his "commitment" to reaching a sales target turned into the expectation that this was an actual thing that's gonna happen (within 3 months even). Gaf continues to amaze me. Not necessarily a compliment.

Just one more additional position for Iwata to resign from in the next 12 months. No big deal.

You should really fix that typo in your name.

They've been getting better. Stuff like Paper Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda are even getting Western releases before Japan. Still not perfect, but this year most of the new stuff with be out in the US within 1 month of the Japanese release.

Don't forget the first ever simultaneous global release of a Pokémon title!

Ah yes, because that makes perfect sense!

First step on the way to the zombie apocalypse.

Are there a lot of Nintendo games that haven't been localized recently?

There are still quite a few. And you really have to include the battles fans had to fight for the Operation Rainfall trio.

Soma Bringer
Fatal Frame IV
Zangeki no Reginleiv
Captain Rainbow
Tomodachi Collection (DS & 3DS - although I fully understand how the text-to-speech thing kinda screws this up in general)
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Another Code R

are the big ones I can dig up without looking at lists.

ah damn that's right. MY BAD. That was from the PS4 conference right? gah, i don't know how I got that mixed up in my head.

So this means no Japanese centric games for USA confirmed? I mean, wasn't it Iwatta who slapped Reggie on the hand because some game didn't sell so they decided to hold back on all those titles that did finally come out that everyone was pissed that wasn't coming to the US.. I'm not sure how to read this.. and lately we have an example of the US getting quite a few Japanese centric games on 3DS and what seems to be in general "fan service"... which way will it go? I can only assume they try and push everything the US's way because there isn't enough content as it is.. this news is very surprising.

If this means a better connection between NoA and NCL, then good. I'll hold my breath for the former becoming more like the latter, however.

I don't get how this changes anything. Do you guys think there was something prohibiting something like Fatal Frame coming to America if that's what Iwata really wanted before he became CEO of Noa?
