Next Generation Less FPS more Platformers

I can promise you less FPS because there will be less games in general.

The platformer thing, do you honestly think this current market will support that many? Especially for the group that buys consoles early in a lifespan.

Barely excited about this. I don't think VR like this will ever be more than a novelty and a passing memory. Surprised people are still investing in it.

Probably because of videos like this. It's definitely something I want to experience, more than any other recent gaming technologies.

I would love a 3D platformer renaissance. 2D platformers are doing great but where are the 3D ones!?
They're much harder to make than 2D platforms. The technical challenges alone are far more complex. Writing a 2D movement and collision system isn't that difficult, but taking it to 3D adds so much more complexity in the math. That doesn't factor in the need for animation and a much smarter camera.

I love first-person as a perspective for gaming. It is easily the most engrossing, and with VR tech catching up, it has the most potential for fully interactive worlds. That said, I want more first person adventure games...where narrative and world building take precedence over shooting. I really think we've exhausted the genre if we approach it from a violent angle.

I really hope that the FPS-scene will take a step back in the next generation and let other genres get back to the light again. Platformers especially, since those are almost exctinct nowadays, which is sad...

i'm sorry but did you just own a pc this past ten?
because platformers are alive and well on home consoles...

What new experiences did we get this gen outside of motion control crap?

cover mechanics. cover mechanics everywhere >_>

also the 'climb anything' mechanic of assassin's creed and infamous games.

oh, and please don't be so narrow minded. some motion control games have been quite awesome.

There was cover mechanics last gen.. hell Winback on the n64 had cover mechanics.

Climbing stuff... I guess, its done better but its not like it wasnt done before.

Ill stop being narrow minded about motioncontrols when I actually play a good motioncontrol game.. most entertainment Ive had his that double fine theater and thats hardly a game at all.

I also want way more platformers, action games and futuristic racers.

Couldn't care less about shooters with a controller and a shitty FOV that I can't change. I don't want to play those.

I won't be getting a ps4 at all unless there are enough GOOD platformers, action games and (future) racing games out to justify it.

What I really need is not more platformers (they are already living it up with their latest renaissance), but more Turn-Based-Strategies! Especially fantasy TBS. Sure, there's AoW3 coming, but apart from that, the genre is quite dead. I was severely disappointed by the latest HoMM and am REALLY not looking forward to another mediocre sequel.

And more isometric RPGs that are not 99% hack&slash....Oh who am I kidding, I'd probably be satisfied if the quests had at least some minimal depth to them without being your typical AAA RPG fed-ex borefest.

I would just like less killing and stressful games and a more relaxing gaming experience without constantly gunning down 1000s of people.

Health regeneration, auto-saving, more openworld games, multiplayer perks ...

Things don't have to be new experiences to be interesting.

This generation showed some very interesting gameplay-related evolution.

What's happening is that genres are melting together. Nowadays, almost every AAA game has it's platform- and RPG-elements. Gameplay is now more diverse than it ever was.

Damn dude... shooters have been around for almost as long as gaming itself. It doesn't even matter if it's first person or not, shooters will continue to be popular for years to come. I don't see anything wrong with this.

They should go where they belong, on the PC. Instead of every western third-party trying to develop cookiecutter gunz 3 with season passes.

Are big budget American action films ruining the film industry? No. So why should it be any different for games?

You lost me at no.

Can't say I've used it but I doubt you can either. Everyone that has used it are astonished at it and if it gets in enough hands I could see it take off.

There are some genres that work best on certain platforms/with certain control methods. You could argue that FPS games belong with mouse and keyboard, but there are a lot of people who swear by pointer controls for first person games. Also there isn't much difference between the average FPS and TPS these days... but neither genre is going anywhere.

I don't go for the latest obscenely high budet action film when looking for a film to watch. A lot of people do, so there is money to be made. But in no way does that impact on the quality of films in general. There are still dozens of great films released every year, just like there are dozens of great games released each year that aren't FPS.

As a fan of both genres, I'm pretty sure I actually played more platformers this gen than FPSes. Super Meat Boy, the Galaxies, VVVVVV, DKCR, Rayman Origins, the NSMB games, Canvas Curse, etc.- we had a veritable renaissance this gen.

More importantly, most games- of any genre- are not worth playing, so I only play a small percentage of the games released each year to completion. As such, the ratio of FPSes to other genres in my playtime isn't anything out of proportion since I'm only playing, what I believe to be, the cream of the crop. I guess what I'm getting at is that the dominant genre on the market shouldn't really matter for any one consumer buying selectively. If the bulk of the market shifted to a different genre, you'd likely see plenty derivative, poorly designed games in it and would end up sticking with just a few staples while forum goers then began to complain about it.

Platformers have always been my favourite genre so I'd welcome a comeback of big budget, disc released AAA-platformers with open arms if it ever happens. However, in general I'd be very happy if next gen would offer a comeback of colourful, less serious in tone games. If Knack is anything to go by there seems to be a good chance of that happening. I'd also welcome a comeback of games like Pandemonium, just anything that features a wacky scenario. I can understand the developers going after realism but I wish that we'll also be getting lots of games that don't try to be realistic.

Well, if someone makes one that takes off, the copycats will come out of the woodwork. It's just that there's no way that one will get the budget of a flagship game. Catch-22, really.

I want to see more The Cave and Giana Sisters! My gods those games are great! It's like a revolution in 2D platforming.

Yeah, I saw a recent tweet by Jaffe where he highly praised it after trying it. For some reason, I don't see it taking off all that much. People are still used to playing in front of a television set.

True, but I think once people try it they'll see how it changes things.

I can't wait to get my hands on one, I've always been open to massive changes in the industry though.

God no, as bas as the flood of FPS games is, it would be far worse if the same ammount of platformers would be released.
