What if xbox 720 IS a cable set top box? Wouldn't the always online makes sense?Just a theory.

This would make sense for a number of countries and then it wouldn't for a number of others, most cable features won't be seen outside of NA anyway due to a bunch of issues.

Makes sense.....wait, there isn't cable in Europe or other countries? Pardon my ignorance on the topic.

you shouldnt have to be online to watch tv, either.
Thats...thats not what i'm saying :/

Expect that either theres going to be a bunch of different models for different countries (yay differing standards) or they are just not going to implement it outside of NA at all, it will be a big headache to do over all and IMO doesn't make much sense.

Damn, scratch that theory, i didn't know cable is meh globally.

What Microsoft need to do to get this right is to show major exclusives (which what was lacking of Sony PS4 event) and of course their top IPs like Halo,Forza and Fable,it need to be all about the games.

Lacking at the PS4 event? They showed 4 exclusives.

And if you think this event will be all about games, you're in for a huge disappointment my friend.

Oh the other thread bit it. Well, new thread, new hype!

As far as games go, I'll say what I said in the other thread:

E3 will be the game event for sure. I do think they will try to show off a big Kinect game at the May event, though, maybe Ryse. I could see them spending a lot of time on a big reveal demo showing off how it's possible to make a Kinect-controller-hybrid core game. I also think we'll see one other game that doesn't show Kinect use at all to keep it balanced. I think every other game will be saved for E3. A very small taste of games. The rest will be hardware, services, and their vision.

That's my expectation. We won't know everything we want until E3.

I thought I was tripping so I went back and read the thread again. Where does Crazy Butt say anything about required online? I saw him mention that EA had some deal with MS but that's it.

Exactly. Plus VGleaks pretty much put that rumor to rest. Always online to play games doesn't make a lick of sense and I doubt that'll happen.

so this is essentially 'mircosoft direct' but live?
awesome. can't wait for it.

EDIT: oops. thought the press weren't invited. little too eager on my part.

One of the latest sort of credible sounding pastebin rumors said always online is only for Durango games.

So anything else, apps, 360 games (think this rumor also claimed BC) would be allowable to be offline.

I dunno, kinda sounded reasonable *shrugs*

In a sense you do have to be online to watch TV...it comes through a cord to your TV, lol.

If you have cable internet like most americans, there's a decent chance if your internet is down so is your cable TV.

hope ballmer storms in at some point

surely there will be some games.

i mean, tell me what the hell else is supposed to fill up an hour, realistically? i mean seriously give me your hour layout if you dont show any games.

You can fill an hour really quickly.

They'll show the box, the controller, maybe the new UI, bullet point some new features and that's pretty much an hour.

I think they will save the Xbox 360 Mini for E3 along with big game announcements. They've already got a half dozen or so games before the thing has even been announced.

My theory, a one hour event with the promise of "blockbuster titles" at e3 sort of tells me that contrary to popular belief, they might focus on hardware, it's look and feel and what makes it tick (OS etc...). Announce a hardware megaton and leave the viewer salivating at how those "blockbuster titles" might look like on the new hardware.

"My corporate schmuck is better than yours.."

Fanboy shit gets funnier every year.

Xbox boys just need something original. Kazifying things felt fresh...for about a page. Doing the same for MS feels very old hat. Another reason Sony revealed first, it was all about the gifs.

Meme agents have at it...

I vote to photoshop a sad looking J Allard into the background of every E3 photo this year.

I'm expecting games but they could easily fill up an hour with Kinect and partnerships with companies like ESPN if they really wanted to.

Well, I guess in just a few weeks we'll know if these rumors about "always on" and "no used games" are true. Either way excited about a new console being unveiled.

Just for reference, I actually found out about the conference from Google. Amazing how this news spread so quickly. Microsoft is going to spend that marketing money wisely- this thing is going to be huge, whether you like it or not. They certainly have more money to throw around than their competitors and they'll use it.

I can't help but get stoked when I see Microsoft big wigs like Phil Spencer tweet things like this:
Phil Spencer said:
Good Episode guys. Completely agree games critical to platforms success.

I expect to see a LOT of games from May 21st through E3. Xbox was built on gamers. People shit on Mattrick all the time but the dude has been making games since he was 17. Xbox is a gamers company and I'm excited to see what they have in store.

There will be games, but it will be a taste. Sony talked for about 40 mins before they got into games and demos (they were on Gaikai still at that point, and they didn't seem that long-winded to me, time flies), and I expect something similar here. I think we'll hear about their 360 success, their vision for the future, how XBL will evolve, talk about all the third-party partners, show the controller, show the consoles, show new services, then they'll probably get into Kinect.

I expect that to be the juming off point for games. They'll show how Kinect 2 works with a game, that's why I expect Ryse to be shown at this event. I then expect them to demo another new exclusive IP, maybe Black Tusk's game. So my expectation is a couple exclusive IPs demoed, not just trailers, then E3 will have the rest of their surprises, plus third-party titles. It sounds like a fair way for them to handle it.

Interesting move by Microsoft. Having their reveal so close to to E3 is essentially going to insure a majority of the mindshare and discussion going into the event is going to be about the NextBox.

Let's hope for their sake it's good mindshare.

To the majority, it likely will be, but to those who more or less already have an intensely pessimistic view of anything Microsoft does, even before they fully understand what their plans are, they will, predictably, come away more than a little unimpressed and disappointed with whatever it is Microsoft showcases.

A lot of aspirational speak which gamers don't really have the patience for and will only make fun of. I don't think they really considered their audience in that regard to be perfectly honest. Gamers wanna see shit now they don't wanna hear about things that will be great in the future which is why there was so much crying over them not showing the console.

So much crying...

well considering they had press and investors in the direct audience I'd say it was warranted. and as a gamer I quite liked it. Its nice to hear those things lol. no doubt MS will do the same at their reveal.

I dunno... The Microsoft guys just really don't seem as likeable.

I honestly couldn't give a damn about these people so long as they do their jobs and ensure i get the games i want to play. They are interchangeable to me, just suits spitting PR crap i couldn't care less about. (Only exception being Kutaragi, because he was shithouse crazy and always said hilariously over the top shit when hyping the Playstation brand.)

Those expecting a ton of games are in for a disappointment. This reveal will largely focus on unveiling what the console and controller look like, the new dashboard, Kinect 2.0, and services. At the end, I expect a sizzle reel containing all announced next gen third party games (Assassins Creed 4, Watch Dogs, Deep Down, etc) and they will finish with one new exclusive. Everything else will be saved for E3.

The way I understand it is that there will be a larger emphasis on games at E3.

Also, Microsoft is primarily a software company striving to be an all-around entertainment company. I'm hoping that they're building the next Xbox around gamers, but I have my doubts. We'll just have to wait until May 21.

I firmly believe we won't have a full grasp on what is going on with each of these companies until after E3. I think there is moneyhatting and partnerships going on on both sides that won't be revealed until E3
