Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

If you own a platform, you have a big E3 press conference just before E3 starts. That's the way it works.

For Nintendo to move away from that is one very significant step towards them no longer making home consoles. Not saying they'll go third party next year... but I doubt they'll make another non handheld console after the WiiU.

Nintendo being at e3, but replacing their 90 minute conference with a 90 minute Nintendo Direct is your rationale that they'll leave the console business?

So essentially they are still having a conference at the same place..but it's aimed squarely at the business/retail side of things and the press/public won't get to see it..

..we get Nintendo Directs/other to be disclosed stuff..the press get a more hassle free hands on.

Nintendo not even showing up to the fight. Boo

He's kidding, guys. He must be.

I don't know how I feel about Nintendo Directs. I appreciate the information they provide, of course, but they just seem so...subdued. It's like FDR Fireside Chats. A great concept, but did they take the place of the State of the Union Address? Hell no!

And has been stated by others, "live" is always better for creating buzz.

On the internet, that "buzz" is often negative. Especially for Nintendo. haha.

But, if they have a Direct that streams (like their Directs often do), we will still all be able to watch together at the same time. Whether its pre-recorded or live, we'll all be sharing the info as it comes. It's not going to be secretly uploaded to youtube in the middle of the night. You'll know about it. GAF will crash.

Last year, Nintendo spent half their conference discussing announcements they made in a Nintendo Direct a few days before. Pointless.

This has the potential to be good.

I guess some people still aren't seeing what Nintendo is aiming for here. By creating a more intimate experience for the media, they are targeting positive press, and less knee-jerk, misinformed impressions.

As explained in my last post, there's a HUGE difference between an E3 show-floor hands-on, and and E3 closed-door hands-on. The latter, more intimate setting facilitate much more positive impressions/reporting from the media. If Nintendo manages to execute this plan properly, they could walk out of the show in a generally positive light.

Didn't Microsoft used to do something similar with the Bringing It Home thing once? It would be a great idea to do something similar.

EDIT: Actually that may just be me remembering things wrong since I recall there being a demo in 2006 of Sonic, yet it might have been to coincide with his anniversary rather than E3.

No, you're right. I think it was Lost Planet 2 (or maybe Lost Planet 1) and some other games.

No one paid attention because it was E3 week.

If Nintendo had good video games to show, it wouldn't need to be a concern

I really love the Nintendo Direct idea. Keep them up Nintendo! But I will miss the goofiness of having Miyamoto and Reggie on stage. <3

You are blatantly ignoring well thought out, reasoned posts so you can continue to try and make this the death of the system.

You add nothing to this thread.

I dont know if I can post a GN link but Nintendo sent a PR e-mail saying 2 E3 Directs on June 11th.

As you’ve already seen, a lot of news about Nintendo games and services that traditionally would be held until E3 is being delivered this year through Nintendo Directs, and various press events. This approach will continue between now and E3. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be fully informed. We look forward to continuing to provide you with Nintendo news and content in ways you haven’t before experienced. Beyond the news that will be communicated through Nintendo Direct videos in the run up to E3, at the show itself we’re hosting two smaller events on Tuesday morning before the LACC opens instead of just our traditional one event. A media event and a partner presentation will both occur that morning. While the audiences will be different between the two events, both will occur on the Tuesday morning of E3 (June 11) which is the date and time period the public has come to expect for Nintendo to deliver E3 news.

At the Nokia theater we’ll meet with business partners (retailers, publishers, analysts, etc.) from the NOA territory and discuss our plans for driving the business and providing tailored information that this group finds useful to their operations. Nintendo has done these same type of business meetings at past E3 shows, but has not in the past few years. This year we are returning to that business partner meeting format. New this year at our booth in the LACC, prior to the show opening, we’ll invite a small group of media to play our games. We will have a strong line-up of beloved franchise experiences available for immediate hands-on play. We are continuing to consider exciting new ways to bring the news of our games and information directly to the players at home during the E3 timeframe, and will have more to say about that at a later date.”

Honestly, if it means there's less chance of drivel such as the Wii Music display, Cammie Dunnaway nonsense or botched gameplay demos, it's got to be a good thing. Game announcements and trailers exclusively please, thanks.

Edit: Two Directs instead of one live presentation? Sold.

What the fuck are you even talking about?

I am talking about people saying that Nintendo releasing demos of the games that are shown during E3 being something that could help sell systems. People that already want the system when certain games come out are going to get it for those games. I am talking about people that need something to generate an interest in the system. Hearing that you can play a demo of a game that was shown may not be enough.

I am guessing Nintendo will advertise the Directs for E3 very well and then show off some great stuff. I just don't think the demo will be enough for an instant purchase at that time. The games will still have to be released in most cases to get people to buy the console.

I didn't realize you guys missed Moffit so much. I'm sure he'll appreciate all the kind thoughts. Maybe if you ask nicely enough, he'll come do a full presentation for you guys.

It has been a problem, because most E3s no one cares about Nintendo compared to the competition, especially in the last 2-3 years.

You speak as if Microsoft and Sony conferences have been amazing, gaffe-free bastions of wonderment and new announcements. They really haven't. Nobody "won" E3 2012, it was mediocrity all round. Don't even get me started on Microsoft!

They have good games for their audience. They don't have games that can stand up to direct comparison with Sony and MS's big reveals. Especially this year. Which is why they've quit.

Because a God of War/Gears of War prequel is tough shit to beat?

I don't give a fuck about how Nintendo goes about talking about new games and system software: just show me some Smash Bros. 4, Mario Kart, Mario 3D, Wind Waker HD, X, Wii Fit U, Yarn Yoshi, Pikmin 3, and Zelda U, and I'll be the happiest fucking person on the planet.

Seriously, who the fuck cares about the big show? Information will get around regardless.

What are you even talking about ? You want a driving simulator, an couple of fpses and so on from Nintend, just so they can be compared directly to MS and Sony games ?

I remember how much we all cared about Usher and Wonderbook. All three have had weak showings especially in the last 2-3 years. Are you forgetting that Ubisoft had the best conference last year on the back of one game in Watchdogs?

Keep spinning though.

1) I don't like Sony or MS's first party, so this isn't me saying those games are good
2) to the mainstream press, yeah, games on true next gen systems with huge budgets will be seen to completely outclass The New 3D Mario. Even if quality wise I'm sure Mario will end up better than shit like God of War.

Who is saying that?

The gaming press has been less and less interested in Nintendo's content since Wii came out. This isn't breaking news. It's an enthusiasts industry and the enthusiasts working in the press are far more interested in Sony and MS than Nintendo
Can't say I've noticed. All the games that deserve the good review scores and media coverage appear to get it. I think the enthusiasts get more excited about major Nintendo releases than anything, to be fair. Maybe except MGS and Halo.

It isn't the same. They're bailing out of having an event that can be directly compared to their opposition.
The events couldn't be directly compared before this decision; the other two will be sharing significant details of their new systems. They can and will be indirectly compared, and that has happened for every E3 previously.

If Nintendo had good video games to show, it wouldn't need to be a concern
Just to double-check: You are aware that the implicit conclusion of that assertion is that all Nintendo games they show over E3 will be bad, right? Just making sure you're quite clear on what you're stating.

I think this is the real reason for canceling he conference. The casuals are gone and aren't coming back, so they are doubling down on the loyalists. Nintendo Directs are all they need to preach to the choir. The strategy makes sense from this perspective.

I guess.

But Nintendo are basically isolating themselves from anyone in the industry, publishers, developers and gamers (at least, those who aren't part of the Nintendo brand loyalist camp).

That's the definition of a niche.

Also, based on strictly empirical evidence, I can safely say that Nintendo is continuously losing more and more of their old guard fans.

That means, people who used to like Nintendo but they're getting more and more frustrated by their decisions on both the hardware and the software front.

Have you played any Nintendo games lately? Mascots and shit aside, in terms of content and design they are still very very competitive. And I'm talking 3DS games
