In my opinion, GTA V timed X720 exclusive is highly unlikely. Sony knows how huge that franchise is and it would not just watch MS grab it and go away with it.

An established franchise going exclusive is a big risk for a publisher, because there is a chance they could alienate all users on a specific platform. I can only see this happening with new IPs.

You're taking it to a literal extreme though. We're talking about games exclusive to Durango in terms of having a next-gen version.

FIFA, BF4, GTA V; all that stuff is already cobfirmed to be on PS3/360 and that's not changing. Those are huge install bases where most copies will be sold.

But if you want that high-end next-generation experience, that will only be on Durango (or some of it's content, anyway.)

So no, none of these potential deals would have a publisher ass-out, so to speak.

And Microsoft could easily make that payment and not bat an eyelash. They could likely even help cover over half the cost related to marketing, too.

Are we really back to the point where people just think MS will moneyhat all the big franchises because yeah, they're rich and Sony isn't.

Why didn't MS just do all that this generation?

I bet Sony/Nintendo would cry foul and get an antitrust investigation going.

Taking over the whole gaming market by buying off all the game companies is not just a matter of having the money to do it.

LOL.

It cost them that much for timed exclusive DLC.

I thought that was a loan or something? But yeah, I did say "at the very least". It would likely be much more.

Because I think it's kind of illegal or something.

I dont think you can just straight pay for games. I could be wrong.

What's called "moneyhatting" would be like, funding development of a game that wouldn't otherwise be made, or co-marketing deals, mostly the latter I think. You help market a game, pay for the marketing.

Besides, if MS wanted to use money to influence this market they'd be better off adding a few CU's to their hardware.

Because it's more expensive and has less impact later in a generation?

Yeah it makes more sense to do it now possibly.

But I think its quite simple thinking from some people that because MS is so rich, if they front enough money for something, they can get it.

It doesn't quite work like that. At least in terms of MS actually being willing and able to put up vast sums for gains that are probably more expensive than they are worthwhile.

the only exclusivity I can see is the respawn game. and that is very unlikely
but don't forget what gerstmann said so who knows

Manufacturers need to build an install base and having established franchises as a platform exclusives is an easy way to attract the attention of prospective owners. It's a short-term solution.

It's a new IP. You can put "From the creators of Call of Duty" on the front, but it's still a new brand which makes it a risk. Totally in the realm of possibility.

You don't think they'll try? It doesn't make any sense to do it for an entire generation, they had already gotten all the benefit that they were going to get from their earlier gen efforts. Microsoft is launching a new xbox, and this new Xbox could do wonders for Windows 8 and really bring together a lot of the plans that they are interested in seeing succeed, and they will put serious money into giving it a shove. It isn't just that they have the money that Sony doesn't, Microsoft are also actually willing to spend crazy sums of that to push their ambitions forward.

Before you know it, they'll be paying you a 7 figure sum to agree with them. :P

How much would a GTA V exclusive moneyhat cost? I'm thinking $50 million at the very least.

Basically someone would have to pay for the cost of porting it to the next machine exclusively and then covering the lost revenue through not releasing it on another machine.

In GTA's first year of launch about 1 copy of GTA was sold per 360/PS3 worldwide

Using last gen as a guideline, they can expect to sell between 6-10 million in a console's first year of sales.

Lets pick a nice easy number and say between the Ps3's 6 and the 360's 10 and say 9 Million in the first 12 months for a next gen machine.

so 9 million per console in it's first year and 1/3 of those will have GTA

3 million units of a next gen port and 20$ revenue per unit... $60 million for that alone, but then if the game has already been out on another generation, then it's unlikely to sell such a volume, so you could maybe half that.

Either way it's a shit load of cash to pay for something that isn't really exclusive at all, that money would be better off securing potential new IPs or developing titles of your own that are truly exclusive.

The Vita has an exclusive Call of Duty... regardless of it's quality. Anything is possible, though that might have been the case due to it being a handheld.

They would also have to pay extra for the resulting loss of goodwill among Sony and Playstation fans. This part could be very expensive for Take Two / Rockstar's future business...

Not really, Sony didn't pony up the money and the game is on PS3. They will also release the next true next gen GTA on both next gen machines, which will include Sony's system. Clearly Xbox gamers didn't take it personally when the PS2 was getting first bite at the apple for all those years. A few angry fans on forums won't be enough to harm the GTA brand.

Careful

That was said about FF and Resi.

SOny are heavily rumoured to have FF as an exclusive again... sure MS will have been working hard in the other direction.

Oh please. The Xbox user base was a fraction of the PS2 user base.

Nah, the rest of the world doesn't behave like Neogaf when it comes to getting in a strop over trivial things. The game would only ever be timed exclusive I'd of thought , due to cost and it's still coming out for PS3.

At this point GTA carries way more weight than FF, which has fallen way down. Unless they bust out something crazy like FF7 Remake, which is not really going to light the world on fire, I don't see a new FF as the megaton bargaining chip it once was.

If the FF rumours are true then Microsoft are stupid not to explore Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon with further releases. There's obviously a market for the JRPG still, and they don't all require outlandish budgets to make.

I would love to see another Lost Odyssey. FF has lost its way and there are plenty of other RPG's out there to take its place.

It's not only about getting in a strop - the GTA franchise could become less valuable as a result of an exclusive, so just paying for lost sales of one game does not cover the damage.

The only exclusivity I see happening is in the form of partnerships, like MS did with the Gears series. Any new IP is what could be exclusive not an established series.

Hopefully MS will go after the Japanese games/devs (and why not Eastern Europe devs), 360 was successful and the console to get because it had a wide variety of games...this has to return with Durango.

I'd love to see Crimson Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Chromehounds and new projects (Sweary, Miyazaki, Suda 51, Platinum) from Japan next gen. I love Japanese games dammit! :P

I'm leaning towards Respawn's game being the EA Exclusive to Microsoft.

And Final Fantasy going to Sony.

Anything above and beyond that will surprise me.

I would like to see them rekindle whatever agreements they had with Sega in the early years of the Xbox. Some good exclusives came out of that relationship.

It makes zero sense for Sony or Microsoft to get GTAV as a next generation exclusive. They'll both target games that were built ground up for next gen. Let's face it: most gamers are going to buy next gen software for their next gen hardware. That's how it goes. Now, could I see Sony or Microsoft targeting the next Fallout game? Or maybe something like a new Epic franchise? Yes, but everyone knows that gamers would overwhelmingly buy GTAV for their 360 or PS3.

Ehum? People bought the cross-gen games the 360 launched with, no? I'm pretty sure I would pick up GTAV for my next-box if it was available Day One. If nothing else, I'm sure it'd run better.
