Kotaku Rumor: Respawn's Game Xbox 360/720 Only, always-online, FPS, Includes Details

One less online fps shooter for me to buy.

Personally think this doesn't make much sense for EA. This is a genre that is stuffed with competition and will even have to compete with Halo and Gears, mot to mention the emergence of Destiny. Also if this game could sell a million or more units on playstation then that is a huge check MS is throwing their way. I hope it back fires worse than the GTA IV DLC.

EA's CEO has resigned, they have been making a lot of decisions that don't make any sense.
9/10 of their moves of recent have been to enter into more saturated markets. I suspect they think the FPS MMO model is new (tbf, it is and I suspect could draw a lot of interest).

Details sound interesting. This could be Microsoft's big exclusive this gen. I could see it replacing Gears in their lineup since that series is likely done for a while.

Yeah I agree. It sounds somewhat different from the standard TDM focused FPS.

I don't think Gears is going to disappear though, there were job listings posted in some thread here a while back mentioning someone at MS who could work with Epic on the future of the series or something along those lines.

Sounds a heck of a lot better than 'The Witness' in my opinion. +1 for Xbox8 . Plus the zombie game? possibly a total of +2 if its better than inFamous3. Looking good for Microsoft

I can't believe some people are trying to downplay this. Sony concluded it's PS4 unveil with Destiny "exclusive content" because they wanted to show there were getting something exclusive for the next game from the guys that made Halo. This is the next game from the guys who made CoD going console exclusive, and I've seriously read "I don't see this as a big deal"?

Poor misguided soul.

In regards to the news, not megaton in the least.

Leaving the console exclusivity out of the conversation for while, there is this:

Two sources have told us that this new game is, in fact, always-online.
While we can safely assume that we'll all see Respawn's game at E3, the source that shared the most specifics of the game with us said we shouldn't expect to play the game until some time next year. They expect it to be a full-sized, boxed retail game.

It seems to be in direct competition with Bungie's Destiny. How is it going to fair against that game? Games like this (mulitiplayer focused) need to sustain players. It will be interesting to see how many player stick with which game on which platform. But then again Destiny is on completely different scale (there is going to be a lot for the single player focused gamers as well), I mean with this game:

Our source was less clear on whether the game would have a single-player mode but speculated that players might be able to go into maps and battle only against bots. They did not think that the game would have a standalone linear campaign, which might disappoint those who enjoyed the excitement and narrative daring of Modern Warfare's solo campaigns.

How is a giant 3rd party game going exclusive to any console not megaton? Oh I forgot; its because its Microsoft. Just because the game might not meet your personal taste in games doesnt mean this isnt huge news.

Respawn news leaks way too often, so I bet this is true. A few people over there with big mouths.

People are saying this is the return of third party exclusive, but what evidence have we seen of that on Sony's part?

Lastly, I would think Sony would know if this were true, as they'd clearly know if a game is being made for their system, right? If I were them... I'd let some comment "slip" confirming this, denying MS the fireworks when they want.

"As far as we know, the fine developers at Respawn aren't making any games for Playstation platforms" said off-hand in an interview to ItalyandPolandGames.biz.eu

Right but Dear Esther runs pretty well on high settings on my 2011 MacBook Pro.

I was sort of hoping for something a bit more from next-gen, you know.
I think it's safe to say Valve will target the widest scope of computers possible, while third parties will do a lot more with the engine. Hence my example. You'll have to wait to see a nextgen example with whatever nextgen variant comes forth :P

If they're going to show a brand new next gen game that doesn't even look as good as BF4 it's going to be an uphill battle. I don't think "from the creators of Call of Duty" is going to pull much weight.

Trust me the game is going to be amazing Microsoft isn't going to pay big money for a mediocre 3rd party exclusive

Ehh...

Although, despite not being a fan of the setting, I'm sure this game will turn out fine

When we're sick of shooters.

I predicted at least 2 or 3 megaton moneyhat exclusives for Durango in year one. This looks like one of them. I'd be shocked if there wasn't more out there... The stakes are higher than ever and Microsoft has one clear advantage over Sony: BANK.

=)

This is where my head is at as well. This is a big get for Microsoft, don't get me wrong, but it faces some heavy competition. BF4 launches on everything this fall and Destiny will be on everything as well, not to mention Call of Duty. Then it is entirely feasible that a very online oriented Halo will come out in 2014 as well.

But kudos to Microsoft on landing this, I just doubt it is worth the millions spent to make it happen. Would rather them doing this themselves like Sony is with Guerrilla Games and Sony Santa Monica for a fraction of the cost. Those are true exclusives at a fraction of the cost, and people are fooling themselves if you think Respawn's games won't eventually come to PS4. Even if it is not until the sequel. That's the shoe that most will be waiting to drop.

this isn't really a "giant 3rd party game" yet .. West and Zampella shouldn't be given as long of a rope as we're giving them just because they created Call of Duty. Let's see the game before we fire the hyperockets.

I didn't know we Gaffers were the ones buying 20 million copies of CoD every year. Glad that this year will finally be different!

Not really sure what you're arguing/implying through poor sarcasm...

You can be sick of a genre without having played it recently.

For a considerably huge amount of negativity towards always online lately, I am surprised to see that people are now celebrating Microsoft having a 3rd party exclusive rather than being cautious about this always online thing.

Also: There are surely some CoD veterans at Respawn, but who tells you guys that the game will be sooooo good? I mean, we have literally seen NOTHING yet.

I wonder how many people that are dissing this game already, without really knowing anything substantial at all about it would change their tune if it was revealed to be a multiplatform game???

Just seems like a lot of people that happen to favor "something" else is dissing something on a console that they may not prefer...not that anything is official or anything.

Because it's only a 'giant 3rd party game' in concept, there's no direct proof of quality from Respawn as a new developer. Plus we know practically nothing about the game outside of a pretty bland description, which doesn't excite a lot of people.

is that really what it boils down to?

For many. Sadly yes.

I guarantee you if Respawn comes out tomorrow and says this rumour is bullshit which could happen. And this game is still on for both PS4 and Nextbox. A lot of people would suddenly be magically looking forward to this again.

I just don't get the general dismissal of fairly large news based on rational or irrational hatred of one brand over another. It may not be large news to you, but it is large news in general. Can you really not remove your own personal bias in this situation and admit the truth? Is it that hard to do?

It's such a sad state of affairs that this mindset exists. As if most anyone on either side has a personal stake in the console wars.

You're saying this isn't huge news because "we're sick of shooters." Who's "we"? GAF? Cuz yeah, GAF seems to be sick of shooters, but the MARKET isn't. That's what determines a megaton -- potential for financial success. Not potential for indie cred.

Trust me anything affiliated with call of duty is money, word will spread around from all of those hardcore call of duty players online to the core players

The hilarious thing is the Killzone 4 thread and the multiple massive Battlefield 4 ones leading up to it's reveal tells me Gaf is certainly not sick of shooters.

Despite what some people say.

It is large news but it's not 'megaton' news, I think that is where some people draw the line.
MS chasing exclusivity of a big FPS was pretty much a guarantee really, and Respawn making something to try and rival CoD was also quite obvious. Marry the two together and this is where we arrive at, no particular surprise and no excitement from some because we know practically nothing outside of 'sci-fi FPS'.

A megaton would be something completely unexpected.
