Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

Sunshine came before it so I'll have to agree to disagree but it's the one Mario I've really really enjoyed since the 64 one since I was really lttp on Sunshine.

I think it was the true 3d evolution of platforming Mario games. Galaxy games are great, but they're something different.

Differently a gem.

My main issue with it is that it just feels like a 3D NSMB with a splash more creativity
(and better music)
. I really enjoyed the game, and it's one of the few games I've really put in the effort to 100%, but it lacks the same immersion and feel that 64/Sunshine/Galax(ies) offered.

It's platforming bliss, but I like the 3D Marios because they offer more than just platforming. 3D Land didn't.

It was okay but I much rather would have preferred a true 3D mario game like 64/Sunshine/Galaxy
Mario 3D land is the truest 3D Mario ever. It just doesn't have a sensation of open world or deep levels, but as a 3D platformer it feels fresh for the pacing and fun it has. I think it just lacked a bit on content (like having more game modes, for example collecting purple coins in all leels within a time limit or challenges)

Sure.

And by sure, I mean no.

You're not alone. 3D land felt like a fun distraction, but hardly on the level of the Galaxy games. I think it's the fact that the game is so damned easy until the last third of the game or so.

I honestly enjoyed NSMB2 more.

samesies

also people seem to forget that 3D land is at a sucky 30 fps

what a chump

...which makes all the difference. It felt more like a 2D game than a 3D game.

3D Land felt like poor mans version of Crash Bandicoot. I'd rather them make excellent 2D Marios or excellent, innovative/open Marios like 64 or Galaxy.

But yeah ^^ 64 is not aging well. Still when it was released it was friggin phenomenal unlike this.

So was the original Legend of Zelda when it first released. But I rarely ever see anybody put it anywhere near the top of best Zelda games.

Both Galaxies trump it in nearly every aspect.

Count me among those confused by the 3D Land adoration. It's good, but I really didn't see anything super special about it. It's a poor man's Super Mario Galaxy.
One major thing I personally felt is it cut the extraneous stuff and was pure fun. It cut out all the crap no one cares about and left a fun game. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 definitely are more epic and creative games and I don't think SM3DL ever hit the highs of the galaxy series. However I think SM3DL was one huge playground. I'll be honest, Galaxy had about 3-4 worlds of interesting and genuinely fun concepts. The first two worlds were like tutorial worlds teaching you concepts and was rather boring. The last world was filled with a lot of the same ideas and concepts just harder.

Galaxy 2 was vastly superior with 5-6 worlds full of interesting galaxies.

Galaxy 2> SM3DL> SM64> SMG> SMS

Wrong. The game is absolutely timeless. Ocarina of Time on the other hand...

Considering it is less challenging, less pretty and features less sophisticated level design compared to Galaxy, OP is wrong.

Nevertheless I love 3D Land.

Super Mario 64 levels are so sparse and empty feeling in 2013. There's way too much time just running/swimming/flying large distances.

Super Mario 3D Land is a brilliant game where you are almost always doing something other than covering distance, and can be digested in small bites, which is absolutely perfect for a handheld title.

I love all the Mario's. Especially the last few. Galaxy 1 and 2, 3D Land, NSMBU was beast mode, I feel and etc.

Hard to say which is my favorite Mario as many of them are just that damn good. But I can confidently say that Super Mario Sunshine was pure caca.

I don't like that 3D Marios go to a linear progression level. I want hud worlds as in 64, sunshine and in a lower measure Galaxy.

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone to the Mario Sunshine love.

Galaxy 1, 2, 3D Land and SMB 3 all reside in heaven among the gods

Mario 64 is slumming it in purgatory, aging a little worse everyday

64 is ageing super slowly if at all. Still nice and playable for me lol.

On topic,Both Galaxys are in a league of their own but I love 3d land since it's like a mini mario galaxy and good music.

I like 3d land the most out of the 3d mario games because to me it feels like the classic 2d games ported into 3d. So when people say it's their favorite. This is most likely why.

64 = 3D Land > Galaxy 2 >> Galaxy 1 >>> Mario Sunshine

So yes, I agree! That moment when I realized just how awesome 3D Land was was a magical moment.

Not that the past Mario games were bad... I love them except for Sunshine which I just like.

It didn't really have much competition with Sunshine and the Galaxy games IMO, but yes, I would agree. It's still not nearly as good as Mario 64 when it came out. That was a mind-blowing experience upon release, whereas 3D Land is a "mere" great experience.

To be fair, though, I never played Galaxy 2. I just didn't like Galaxy and assumed that 2 was similar.

It's fun and I hope they keep going with it because the portable Super Mario's have true identity again rather than just being ports, but I prefer the Galaxy games and NSMB games more.

64 (controls are rough imo)

Wow, I consider the control over Mario in Mario 64 to be the best part. You can make him do just about anything and go about the stars in so many different ways.

3D Land can't even be mentioned in the same breath as the Galaxy games for how stupidly limited Mario's jumping abilities are. I know what the makers were trying to do: 2D Mario in 3D--it's just stupid and makes the game all that much more boring. What good are these playgrounds to jump around in when Mario has like three different ways to jump?

Yeah Mario 3 was pretty bad too right.

This is about where I fall. Additionally, I think that the presence of the Tanooki Suit presents a major balance issue. I still enjoyed the game, though.

I agree with OP, but I've never played Galaxy 2 (and I only played Galaxy 1 for like 2 hours). I just couldn't do SD graphics by that point. I didn't play most Wii games.

What I wouldn't give for Super Mario Galaxy HD Collection. Nintendo should be pumping that shit out during this dry season. =(

But isn't 3D land SD?
