Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

That's pretty much what it is :lol

This is about where I fall. Additionally, I think that the presence of the Tanooki Suit presents a major balance issue. I still enjoyed the game, though.

This must be the generation where Nintendo cashes in on the love of Super Mario 3. Mario Kart 7 added a tail power up too.

Individuals have different tastes, so I'm not sure what the issue is here. If Nintendo continues to make "full" 3D games like the Galaxy games alongside games like 3D Land, everyone will be happy (general character/franchise fatigue aside).

Yeah Mario 3 was pretty bad too right.

Yes, because I clearly hold 2D Mario and 3D Mario by the same standards...?

Super Mario Bros. 3 took what Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels had built and expanded on them. Super Mario 3D Land takes the base 3D Mario controls and strips them down to the bare, bare, minimum. Not comparable at all, not even getting into the fact that they're completely different beasts in completely different dimensions.

I prefer 2D Mario to 3D Mario; but I like them both for different reasons. Galaxy was more 2D-esque than SM64, and I think it's a better game than SM64. I consider Super Mario 3D Land this grey area in the middle that ends up satisfying neither.

You can't fit people's opinions into neat little boxes like that.

It's not as good as Galaxy, but it is the best handheld Mario and measures up well against the console series. You can tell they were having a lot of fun designing the levels, and its really quite impressive and interesting as to what they accomplished. Lots of variety, very imaginative tests of skill as well as fun homages to old levels or other series like Zelda. Very cool game. Mario 64 is honestly not a very good platformer and doesn't hold up well anymore, its a dumb collectathon.

I love 2D Marios and Mario 64! Sunshine was pretty fun, too, but not great. 3D Land was awesome.

I think I would appreciate it more if I could play it on a full controller. The 3DS has pretty good controls for a portable device, but it still gets uncomfortable in my hands, especially for longer play sessions.

Sure we will. The only thing missing is the opinion that it's 2.5D

It's a good game, but it's saved by the back half. The game is just too easy.

The game was designed to be a gateway to 3D Mario. A lot of people didn't make the transition to 3D Mario and gave up at Super Mario 64 (my parents included). NSMB series proved they didn't stop liking Mario, They just couldn't play 3D games. 3D Land was supposed to be the remedy to that.

This is the one with the small linear levels that was over incredibly quick and then the end game was just time trials or the same levels over again but changed a little bit? Yeah, not so much. SM64 was so much better -.

It's an okay game but nothing special. Like the Galaxies in Galaxy 1 (but to an even more severe extent), the levels have enough to compel you during your first run through them but after that it's over. The second playthrough with Luigi isn't fun at all.

(I miss the days of Sunshine where you could look forward to entering a level more than once.)

It's a great Mario 3D game but it was a bit too easy. Still fun and best portable Mario game In a long time. Hope a sequel is announced soon!!!

I disagree. The Galaxy games were so filled with magic and creativity. 3D Land is fun, and has some great platforming, but its much less creative and has almost no 'wow' moments.

Nintendo could have made a game like 64/Sunshine but they thought it would be better to make it handheld friendly with short levels. Wish they would quit with that shit, they ruined Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion doing that, IMO.

I think I liked it a lot because I wasn't expecting much. I got it for Christmas and was blown away by it. It's definitely up there.

I will say this in defence of 3D Land: it has the best boss in the series, and unlike Mario 64 which was amazing in '96, but doesn't hold up at all, its design choices should make it relatively timeless.

It's also much better than Sunshine, so there's that.
Sunshine is still a good game.

I prefer 2D Mario over 3D Mario but I feel that 3D Land is the weakest 3D Mario game I've ever played.

Then again I never touched Sunshine.

64 holds up just fine for me. Just beat it again a few weeks ago. So what are these design choices that make 3D Land timeless?

The controls feel great in SM3DL. Not quite as good as Sunshine (yep I think Sunshine controls best) but better than Super Mario Galaxy feels to me. I don't think the level design is as good as other 3D Mario games though (and I'm obviously of the opinion that its more a 3D Mario than a 2D one). It rarely impresses visually either. Its a great looking game on the 3DS but after the Galaxy games I must confess to being disappointed I never saw some larger set-piece like environments like that huge spinning lava cylinder in Galaxy 1.

Still easily a must play for Mario fans.

Oh, list wars, huh!? I'll do it too, though NSMBU is omitted as I have yet to play it. I think Yoshi's Island and Wario Land are hard catches to put on here; they count as Mario games with their names but they're more of sub-series. Makes me wanna list Donkey Kong games! :P

Handheld man, different standard than games on my 50" plasma. Also I've found that cranking up the 3D makes the 3DS graphics tolerable.

But then wouldn't the existence of the Vita make 3DS graphics intolerable for you? The 3DS is farther behind the Vita than the Wii is behind the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The most streamlined 3D Mario with no bullshit tutorial/intro/fluff. The last half of the game has great level design, who cares that they're just remixed levels.
But the first half is super easy, and it was "safest" of the 3D Marios.

Also, what's with Nintendo wanting all players to see the credits or whatever? I remember the designers saying that in an Iwata Asks. Hopefully in the next one the game "ends" after 10 stars, so they just go crazy with the levels for the remaining 110.

It's hard to go back to the 3DS after playing the Vita. Everything about the Vita looks and feels better than the 3DS.

It's kind of a "Kirby-esque" style. Kirby's levels are generally quite easy and despite some difficult bosses, getting to the "end" isn't difficult. The collectibles and challenges and getting to 100% are the big sources of difficulty. Mario's starting to feel that way too, for better or worse.

I'm a bit LTTP, but seriously...

This game is AMAZING! The classic music, stage layouts, secrets, enemies…my god, nostalgia in every turn.

This really feels like the Mario game Nintendo should have been pushing instead of the NSMB series.

I personally feel this game is more of a Mario game than the Galaxy games, that while fun, still relied on gimmicky controls and an atmosphere/music that didn't quite click with me.

If you're on the fence of what free game to get (from the 3DSXL promotion), my vote goes to SM3DL.

Here, here.

For some reason, I'm impartial to sunshine/galaxy/galaxy 2, but I adored this! For some reason, at 12 yrs old, I'd pictured Mario 64 to be like how 3D land turned out...

I found SM3DL to be one of the best 3D Mario titles (only behind Galaxy 2) and this is coming from someone who enjoys every 3D Mario over every 2D Mario (except World).

64 holds up just fine for me. Just beat it again a few weeks ago. So what are these design choices that make 3D Land timeless?

64 controls like shit by today's standards, and level design is very hit or miss, IMO. 3D Land is (relatively) timeless because it has an actual vision apart from pure novelty (64's novelty was from being the first 3D platformer, and it succeeded very well in this regard... when it was released). 3DL takes an approach to 3D platforming that hasn't really been done before and basically perfects it in terms of gameplay. Its main problems are that it's too easy for a large chunk, and feels barebones in some respects. But it controls like a dream and the level designs, while short, are consistently excellent and engrossing. It never feels like a slog, which describes how I feel about Mario 64 for most of it.

If you asked me to compare how I felt about 64 in 1996 versus how I felt about 3DL in 2011, I would rank 64 >>>>>>>> 3DL. But if you asked me to play one or the other in 2013, it's not really even a decision I'd have to think about. 3D Land, any day of the week.

I agree with you, playing Mario with my GF makes me apperticate even more the value of a gentle difficulty curve. However, for me, the game was even too easy in the back half.

Not for me, the 3d effect makes 3ds a unique experience for me :)

I guess I could understand if you are one of the people that play with 3d off always though. 3ds games look like ass with it off to me

I don't use the 3D often. When it's on I can't hold the sweet spot and end up concentrating more on that than the game I am playing.

To be honest, I think the 3D effect is poorly implemented. I can't even move without losing the sweet spot and I hear it's even worse on the XL.

64, sunshine, galaxy, and galaxy 2 blow Super Mario 3d Land out of the water.

Can't believe how much praise this game is getting, and that its actually being considered for being greater than the masterpiece that was galaxy. For once I agree with metacritic scores with how the games in the series were rated. This game was good, but it was definitely not amazing. Atleast in my opinion. I don't know how many threads I replied to where I specifically detested this game for the 2D things it pulls and how streamlined it felt. Not to mention less challenging and numerous other issues that I need to play again to remember.

It feels like I played a completely different game because when I got this game along with buying a 3DS for this game I thought it was the worst in the series and an abomination. I thought they could have pulled a much better entry for the 3DS. I sure hope they don't continue with this direction with the wiiU entry and I doubt they will.

Its been too long since I played this game so I think its about time I made a dedicated argument to why I didn't like it so much, and play SM64 and SMG1&2 again as a side by side comparison. It'll probably take a month after I finish a few other games off my plate, but this game is good, nowhere near any of the other 3D mario game levels of greatness.

If you are having this problem have you tried turning the 3d slider down to where it's just barely on?
