Even NSMB is better than it.

But isn't 3D land SD?
This is about where I fall. Additionally, I think that the presence of the Tanooki Suit presents a major balance issue. I still enjoyed the game, though.

Yeah Mario 3 was pretty bad too right.
I prefer 2D Mario to 3D Mario; but I like them both for different reasons. Galaxy was more 2D-esque than SM64, and I think it's a better game than SM64. I consider Super Mario 3D Land this grey area in the middle that ends up satisfying neither.ITT: people who prefer 2D Marios saying the 2D-esque 3D Mario is the best 3D Mario, and people who prefer 3D Marios saying the 2D-esque 3D Mario is the worst 3D Mario.

It's a good game, but it's saved by the back half. The game is just too easy.
It's an okay game but nothing special. Like the Galaxies in Galaxy 1 (but to an even more severe extent), the levels have enough to compel you during your first run through them but after that it's over. The second playthrough with Luigi isn't fun at all.
(I miss the days of Sunshine where you could look forward to entering a level more than once.)
I disagree. The Galaxy games were so filled with magic and creativity. 3D Land is fun, and has some great platforming, but its much less creative and has almost no 'wow' moments.

I will say this in defence of 3D Land: it has the best boss in the series, and unlike Mario 64 which was amazing at the time, but doesn't hold up at all, its design choices should make it relatively timeless.
It's also much better than Sunshine, so there's that.Sunshine is still a good game.

Handheld man, different standard than games on my 50" plasma. Also I've found that cranking up the 3D makes the 3DS graphics tolerable.
But then wouldn't the existence of the Vita make 3DS graphics intolerable for you? The 3DS is farther behind the Vita than the Wii is behind the Xbox 360 and PS3.
It's hard to go back to the 3DS after playing the Vita.

It's kind of a "Kirby-esque" style. Kirby's levels are generally quite easy and despite some difficult bosses, getting to the "end" isn't difficult. The collectibles and challenges and getting to 100% are the big sources of difficulty. Mario's starting to feel that way too, for better or worse. Also, what's with Nintendo wanting all players to see the credits or whatever? I remember the designers saying that in an Iwata Asks. Hopefully in the next one the game "ends" after 10 stars, so they just go crazy with the levels for the remaining 110.
I'm a bit LTTP, but seriously...
This game is AMAZING! The classic music, stage layouts, secrets, enemies my god, nostalgia in every turn.
This really feels like the Mario game Nintendo should have been pushing instead of the NSMB series.
I personally feel this game is more of a Mario game than the Galaxy games, that while fun, still relied on gimmicky controls and an atmosphere/music that didn't quite click with me.
If you're on the fence of what free game to get (from the 3DSXL promotion), my vote goes to SM3DL.

New Super Mario Bros U is better though!
I found SM3DL to be one of the best 3D Mario titles (only behind Galaxy 2) and this is coming from someone who enjoys every 3D Mario over every 2D Mario (except World).ITT: people who prefer 2D Marios saying the 2D-esque 3D Mario is the best 3D Mario, and people who prefer 3D Marios saying the 2D-esque 3D Mario is the worst 3D Mario.

64 holds up just fine for me. Just beat it again a few weeks ago. So what are these design choices that make 3D Land timeless?
The game was designed to be a gateway to 3D Mario. A lot of people didn't make the transition to 3D Mario and gave up at Super Mario 64 (my parents included). NSMB series proved they didn't stop liking Mario, They just couldn't play 3D games. 3D Land was supposed to be the remedy to that.
Not for me, the 3d effect makes 3ds a unique experience for me
I guess I could understand if you are one of the people that play with 3d off always though. 3ds games look like ass with it off to me
I don't use the 3D often. When it's on I can't hold the sweet spot and end up concentrating more on that than the game I am playing.
To be honest, I think the 3D effect is poorly implemented. I can't even move without losing the sweet spot and I hear it's even worse on the XL.
