Games which are in desperate need of a "definitive" version

Interesting thread though what constitutes the need for a definitive version is fairly subjective.

Resident Evil 4 for example. We have the original GC game, the PS2 version with added content but cut visuals, then the Wii version with the added content, GC visuals, and new controls options. Of these the Wii version is definitive.

But then there are the HD console and PC versions based off the PS2 version (if I recall correctly). Do we consider the upgrade in resolution to be a feature equivalent to added content? If so than even the Wii version is not definitive.

Nothing wrong with a bit of subjectivity :p

For me the Wii version remains a clear step above the others, but for people who value the HD visuals especially highly, they may rightly disagree.

Hopefully the incoming mobile versions will address that. Not as good as a remake, but they can become the best way to play the original.

A mobile version without button controls would annoy me, but I'd play it. I can get over that if it resolves everything else. Still... a 3DS/Vita re-release... I can dream.

I saw mods enhancing FF4 GBA release like the color palette. Maybe there is one for the audio.

IIRC, there's a patch/mod replacing the soundtrack of FF6 GBA with the SNES music.

The audio isn't a problem in FF4 GBA. The European version of FF4 GBA (fixes all the glitches) is the definitive version of the game with the original sprites and the like.

Monster Hunter 4 - PS4 or Wii U 1080p 60fps

Was there something wrong with the PSP version? People always seem to treat that as the best.

I personally prefer the DS remake (heresy, I know), but I wouldn't be so bold as to claim it to be "definitive" :p

Dark Souls - Dat Framerate Edition

PC version.

I agree with FFXII Zodiac HD edition, would be godly.

Also Dragon's Dogma on PC without the technical issues of the PS3 and 360 versions, maybe go a step farther and add level editor for infinite dungeon potential.

MGS1 - GC has better graphics. PS1 everything else.
MGS3 - HD versions missing demo theatre and Snake's Nightmare but have 60 FPS
Ninja Gaiden - PS3 has dual blades and Rachel missions, Xbox has bigger puzzles and extra costumes and other stuff

3D Mario - a proper one with all the trimmings set in the mushroom kingdom with actual world progression and an adventure feel.

I guess I'm in the minority that wants a new localization for VII.

Oh I do as well. If only to fix the BS stereotyping being done Barrett. I can't replay the game now that I'm much older because of that shit. I get to disgusted by it and end up turning the game off.

Vita version on PS3 would be a definitive version for me.

Just about any big budget PS3/360 game ported properly to WiiU would be a definitive vetsion too.

Fire Emblem 4 (Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) was predictably never brought over. It hasn't received a remake of some kind, which is a shame because it's arguably one of the best FE games, and it has hands down the best story in a fire emblem game to date. (All of those supposedly "new" features that were in FE: Awakening like the marriage system, actually originated in FE4)

PS: This game also had the best FE villain ever.

I do not think it has the best story , but I like your idea.

MMMM, dat 90's fantasy-slayer-ass animu art, so not good.

Resident Evil 1 is about as bad as RE2.

- Original Japanese PS1 version is the baseline
- US/PAL one is in English but has censored FMV
- US/PAL Director's Cut adds arranged mode and uncensored Kenneth death but Capcom messed up and forgot to restore the uncensored intro
- French/German DC has uncensored intro but censored Kenneth death
- Japanese Dual Shock Version adds analogue controls, vibration and orchestrated soundtrack that's generally considered worse
- Saturn version adds Battle Game mode and exclusive enemies and costumes, but looks worse
- PC version is completely uncensored and has best graphics and additional weapons but has some compatibility problems with modern systems
- DS version brings in many improvements from subsequent games (180 turn, etc), Rebirth mode (new puzzles and enemies) and multiplayer but is censored again
- GameCube remake is brilliant but is largely a different game

Edit: Also Conker's Bad Fur Day. The Xbox version has vastly improved graphics and online multiplayer but is censored. N64 version is less censored but looks worse, only has local multi, and costs an absolute fortune these days.

Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3.

Without having to jump through hoops for the PC versions.
Silent Hill 1 only has a PS1 version, so that's the definitive one.

I was thinking the same thing. I got the HD Collection basically for free last year in a deal, but I haven't even bothered to unwrap it after hearing how terrible of a job they did with it, even post-patch.

Since my PS3 isn't backwards compatible, it's almost gotten to the point where I'm considering going out and getting a used PS2 just for Silent Hill 2/3. Which is not something I especially want to do, but I want to avoid playing those games in the worst possible light.

A true, competently done HD Collection by Bluepoint would certainly make life a lot easier, but I doubt Konami is in much of a rush to do it, and do it right.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
FFVI was my immediate thought when I saw the thread title, so OP knows what's up.

I'm in agreement with OP as well. I'm sure that one day they'll do it, I just hope they put time and effort in to build it properly, not just re-skin it.

MGS3.
The 3DS version has MGS4 controls and horrid performance.
The HD version has decent performance, but sticks with the horrid controls.

The GBA release is arguably the most modern but is unfortunately saddled with the GBA system's various limitations, most notably its massively downgraded audio.
There's a patch to get the SNES music to the GBA version, and another that restores the original colour palette.

Maturity, bitches.
SMA is the definitive version, I have trouble going back to previous versions that lack Toad's croaking wail of a voice, cheesy boss quotes and ROBO BIRDO.
Weird how conservative they went with the other SMAs. Super Mario World would have been so much better if the Koopalings had cheesy taunts.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Plus is in desperate need to be playable on a home console

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike (Needs the rest of the stages from New Generation/Double Impact)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 Manhattan Project needs a 4 player version

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Oh, cool, I didn't even have to venture past the OP.

Final Fantasy Goddamn 6, Square. Just fucking do it already.

*watches as they go "remake" 4 again*

Guys, any game that comes to the Wii U is the definitive version. Even the ones that get cancelled (aliens) :p

Dragon's Dogma, needs a PC version.

Resident Evil 2 simply needs a facelift. I played RE2 last summer for the first time, it is arguably the best of the old style Resident Evil's, I was impressed.

As others have said, definitely Persona 3. I had to play Portable+FES for the complete experience. (and it was awesome, if I may add)

Also agree with FF6.

P3P is the definite version, it was awesome to play the game in VN format and without wasting my time walking around, really made it easier to replay(and female MC was better than the male one)

Nope.

I get the "laziness" aspect of thinking portable is the real version, but there were way too many scenes, ESPECIALLY THE ONES IN OCTOBER, that are somewhat ruined by not having animated models moving around to go with what's happening. You lose a lot of the emotional punch of a scene that way. They were smart to have the MC's awakening for the first time take place in a fake battle using the models, but they don't do that anywhere else in the game. What a letdown.

There needs to be a 3 with a full version of the game for the Female MC, animated properly, and the Answer needs to be reworked slightly so what happens in the Journey effects the Answer(with Junpei, what sex MC was, etc).

Suikoden 2, has sound glitches, bad translation and of course is impossible to find. Japan got a widescreen addition for PSP which we never got.

Was thinking about this, and I think for me it's probably Mario 3.

I want the option to use the NES graphics and the All-Stars graphics, plus the addition of the e-reader levels in both the old style graphics and the new style. Also, let the GBA voices be switchable on and off.

Super Mario Sunshine always felt like a good game that had some flaws because they had not enough time.
I'd like to see the blue coins removed and the levels that were cut out (Battleship Island, Lighttower Island, Flame Temple) added there instead. No need for the train system, doing it like in the released game is the better idea anyways.

Final Fantasy Tactics

The "Sound Novels" are minigames found in the Japanese version of the game. Unlocked when the specific Treasures (Artefacts) are earned, they consists of four visual novels that are related to the elements in the Brave Story (Chronicle) section of the game.

These sound novels have no bearing to the main plot, but they are interesting side-stories that tell a bit of the history of Ivalice. They have a playing style similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure books.

They were scrapped entirely in the English versions of the game, whether on PSX, PSP or iOS. It would be nice if Square Enix would translate them in a definitive version of the game.

Came to say Persona 3. FES and Portable have their pros and cons, it'd be nice to have a version with the best things from both.

Throwing my vote for Persona 3 as well.
I know atlus has just been milking 4 at the moment but with the anime film on 3 coming out soon. Seems like a perfect time to release a version that combines the twos content.

Xenoblade needs an active quest system for the sidequests. it's a huge oversight, and one i really do think was cut for time. you have the big arrow at the top of the screen, the "story memo"...why would you implement these if you weren't intending to set up an active quest system? a billboard for finding sidequests would've been nice, too.

It's a rerelease that's buggier than the original. Might as well. Atlus and people sure made a big deal about it coming out.

It's just a ISO dump that has some issues with emulation, it definitely is the same game as P3 FES on disc.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Final Fantasy V.

SNES - Never localized
PSone - Slow loading times
PSN - Slow loading times + botched save screen
GBA - Was the sound compressed? I'm not sure.
iOS - lol graphics and lazy tiling.

The superior version should consist of at least FFI/FFII/FFIV PSP graphics, iOS portraits and localization (if ever that changed), and tweaked SNES gameplay I guess.

MMMM, dat 90's fantasy-slayer-ass animu art, so not good.

They could probably pull off more acceptable art, look at some of the redesigns of certain characters in Thracia 776.

I want Fire Emblem Gaiden much more, though. It's the weirdest one to get through, appropriately the Zelda II of Fire Emblems.

Dragon's Dogma needs a PC version bad (frame rate disaster). Ninja Gaiden 2 could have severely used a Ninja Gaiden 2 Black (no, sigma 2 doesn't count).

Persona 3.

Handheld version has the awesome option of a female protagonist and some better squad options. P3 fes has a long epilogue campaign.

Combine the two on vita please?

By the way, as much as I appreciate all the advice to play FFVI with the patched-in GBA script, I don't think anyone can consider it a replacement for an actual updated release of the game. In truth, the fact that people have gone to such lengths suggests all the more that one is necessary.
