Wearing a class ring

How does GAF feel about wearing a class ring (specifically from a college) around in public? I recently received my ring, but I honestly don't know how to feel about it. I never wear jewelry and I feel like a douche when I wear it, but I spent well over $1500 for it and I don't want to just have it sit in a case...

Personally I only wear mine when I'm with my father and he wears his, or I'm at something school related. Otherwise it's too big to wear often and gets in the way for stuff I like to do. That said, I can understand why some people wear it: they take a lot of pride in their school, what they went through to get their ring, something (fraternity/sorority/group) they want to display proudly, etc.

Is that not normal???

Doesn't seem out of the ordinary - mine was a bit over $1000. The "plain" rings the school offered were ~$500.

Is that not normal??? That was about the average cost (14k, diamonds). Plus I paid for part of it with a payment plan where they charge you $75 a semester starting your freshman year

Uh our high school class rings (which I never bought) were $150. Hell, even our college ones were only like $300 at most...

Man.

This is a college ring. From Texas Tech. And I keep checking to make sure I didn't say $15,000 or something, because I really didn't think it was THAT bad. Checked the order form again, and yeah $1,385 for 14k, plus an extra $210 for diamonds. Not including tax

wtf...mine was like $150...just white gold and onyx.

I'd be afraid losing it at that price!

Edit: Ohh..college ring; that makes more sense. I didn't bother getting one.

Class Rings are fucking expensive.

I wouldn't wear mine but that's only because I have zero school pride and they're fucking expensive. If you already have it... may as well flaunt it.

$15k? Jesus. I'd wear it just to justify the price.

1.5K*

I dont want a grad ring. Useless material crap that I don't need, especially when you'll presumably marry down the line, and that's the ring you are really supposed to wear.

I don't even think people in public care about your school when you're out of it and you're out and about in the real world

Unless it's a MOOD RING!?? :O

Is it OP? Can it tell you your mood?

Edit: Actually I just bought a $250 watch, so I shouldn't talk. I just hope you get a good job

Hey Frankie, aren't you going to give me your class ring?
I'm afraid I can't do that, Annette
Why not?
Because I don't have any arms!
AAAHHHHHHHH!

The concept is really odd to me. Being from the UK.

I don't see why anyone should boast or be proud of a school they attended. It seems like a "I'm better than you because I attended/did X".

The culture around education in the US is different to UK. The majority of people here really could not care less about where you got educated outside of the upper class nuts who are privately educated and even then that just evolves in a "We attended X together because our rich parents paid for it"

OP is this what you got? because that looks fucking tacky

Wtf is a class ring?

In MURICA, you can purchase "class rings" aka fancy and expensive rings that typically has your college name and year of graduation. They have them for high school and college.

For college I don't think there's anything wrong with it as it symbolizes hard work and accomplishment, but people who wear high school rings scream "I peaked in high school."

$1500 is a lot of money though. You could almost buy a PS4 AND an Xbox Infinite for that much.

A diamond-studded ring? I don't think that's a good look on a man, to be honest.

Needs more pictures of the thing.

Edit: Holy shit those are atrocious.

I graduated college in 1983 and have worn my class ring ever since. It's not particularly ostentatious or gaudy (a little bit worn these days), so I guess that's maybe why I've never felt self-conscious about wearing it.

I wear it to remind myself that I made it through college. It was a tough slog for me - intellectually, emotionally, financially - but the ring reminds me that I can achieve things when I need to. (Cue Stuart Smalley)

You should wear if you want to. It doesn't make you a douche fercrissakes.

Shit, they don't wear rings like that everywhere else? Moving to Cali in a few months, and I don't want to make it THAT obvious that I'm from Tx

Just checked ours for Iowa State (graduated in 08) and apparently they can get pretty high:

White Metals
10K White Gold $735.00
14K White Gold $995.00
18K White Gold $1,290.00
Balfour Premium Silver $455.00

Yellow Metals
10K Yellow Gold $735.00
14K Yellow Gold $995.00
18K Yellow Gold $1,290.00

Plus $100 for a .10 carat diamond.

I'd say wear it if you want, otherwise just display it somewhere.

I got one in High school (they even had a ring ceremony to trick everyone into getting one). I never wore the thing once and still feel bad for wasting my parents money on it to this day. I was smart enough to not even consider one in College.

Why did you buy a ring if you never wear jewellery? And one that cost 1.5k no less.

Anyway never heard of this before but it sounds ridiculous. If you wanted to advertise what uni you went to, why not buy a hoodie?

Just saw the pictures, holy shit those things are awful. You couldn't even pay me to wear one.

Did you pay around that much too? Starting to think ordering it from Balfour was a huge mistake

Looks decent enough

I'll try to find a picture of mine while at work - otherwise I'll post it later. As mentioned earlier, I paid just over $1000. I can't remember the exact diamond specifications at the moment. I personally wanted one that looked just like my father's, and Balfour didn't offer anything close. I know they got that high (and higher I think) in price, so I don't think you paid too much if you like what you got.

ghst

thanks for the laugh
i actually got a sapphire coated pair of class truck nuts which i keep in my jacket pocket. they were only three grand and i think they look pretty stylish.

John Dunbar

correct about everything
i didn't even know they had these after junior high. i thought they were stupid then, and my opinion has not changed.

Well my parents kinda forced me to get one. My dad really wanted me to get it for some reason. I'm the first in my family to really go to college, so I guess it's a big deal to them, even though I don't particularly care that much

Those rings prove you got no class OP

Well damn, I didn't think it was THAT bad lol
