Oh god who did that.

Wait until banned paper and the Mirror get hold of this:

Downing told the Liverpool Echo: "Once Carra announced his retirement, Stevie mentioned to the lads that we should do something and with Carra loving his football so much, we decided to go to a game.

"The manager allowed us to go over there and we were all in a box at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

"It was the first time I've been there and it's an amazing stadium. The atmosphere towards the end, after Real scored those two late goals, was brilliant.

"Nuri Sahin joined us in the box after and brought a few of the Dortmund players with him. They were obviously delighted about getting through."

Sahin's pretty much just a tour guide/party liaison nowadays, isn't he.

Just checked, Sahin's featured in the Champions League twice this season, both times as a substitute. He played seven times for Liverpool and seven for Dortmund, although all his games for us were as a starter, whereas at Dortmund he's been used as a substitute.

Still can't wrap my head around the Sahin thing. It'll haunt me for a long time. At the time he was here it just made no sense to use him because he was far from ready to play in the Premier League.

AVB knew, too. Quite incredible really.

BAE INTERVIEW ON THE GRENADE OMG HES FUCKING MAD/BRILLIANT:

"It's always, 'What do you think? Ronaldo or Messi?'" Assou-Ekotto says, blowing out his cheeks and scarcely concealing the boredom. "Or maybe, because he is a Liverpool fan, 'Torres was good' ... blah, blah, blah. I don't particularly like talking about football. I don't immerse myself in it."

As if to illustrate the point, Assou-Ekotto looks blank when Luis Suárez's biting of Branislav Ivanovic comes up. "He did what?" he asks. "Il a mangé?" If he is joking, the deadpan expression is inscrutable. "Surely, Benoît ... come on." But no, it is plain. He has no idea. Assou-Ekotto has never got the fuss about football and footballers.

If AVB sells Assou-Ekotto I'm going to kill myself. He's the GOAT.

"In England, it's more objective. People are more cool about players earning millions. It's also not whether they agree with what I say, it's that there is a respect for the fact I was man enough to say it. I must say, as well, that I have seen quite a few Spurs players kiss the badge and then fuck off. I am still here."

I strongly suspect he was brought in to be the deep lying playmaker he is best at, to play alongside a fit-again Lucas and with Gerrard at no 10. You can see how that would have looked good logically at the start of the season.

What became quickly apparent, however, was that firstly Lucas was a long way from fit (and got another injury to top it off) and secondly that Gerrard's best position was where Sahin was. You add that to the re-emergance of Henderson and the lad had no chance.

I don't think Sahin is best suited to the PL, but to be fair, there were some unfortunate circumstances linked to why it didn't work out.

You should see the last game he played in. He scored a blooter. He's played pretty well since his return to Dortmund.

I saw that goal, was a beauty.

He scored a cracker against West Brom for us, and he often tried to shoot. It's just in other areas he wasn't fast enough, or strong enough, or confident enough. He didn't press with the intensity that Henderson would've, or even, at the time both were in contention, play as neatly as Joe Allen did, or whatever. He didn't have the passing range of Gerrard, or the holding ability of Lucas, and he just wasn't ever preferred. Even Shelvey had more about him to justify a place in the starting lineup, as proven when he came into that City game at Anfield early on and played exceptionally.

I don't blame Rodgers one bit for not shifting the entire team around to accommodate him.

You just needed Lucas fit.

You just needed Lucas fit.

Then where does Gerrard play? He's been exceptional as a deep playmaker, and others have done brilliantly ahead of him. Seems odd to shift all that around for what would likely be little gain. Gerrard's our captain and leader. He's got priority over a loan signing.

Liverpool fans must be very happy with the direction Rodgers is taking you. Playing attractive football, scoring bucket loads of goals. Not in the top 4 but I suspect you'll get there in a few years if Rodgers stays around.

lol, twitter is saying arsenal have signed Jovetic for £26m, won't believe it till I see him holding the no.9 shirt on the website.

Our manager already knew this.

Edit: oh you already said that... well now don't I look stupid

Learnt my lesson about top four predictions but my favourite thing about Rodgers is his ability to coach.

Players have improved massively under him, and I feel like he's got the ability to improve players and unearth potential (Sturridge, Downing, Coutinho, Henderson, Enrique). Plus he's going to apply his coaching to the kids, which means we'll see players like Sterling, Suso, Kelly, Wisdom, and Shelvey grow substantially next season and beyond.

It's exciting, and offsets the disappointment of not playing in Europe, at least for me, anyway. The trajectory's good.
Arnold I think you need to try out a few formations.

It makes everything that little bit easier.

I genuinely reeling trying to make sense of Sahin. We had our rumbo, and it fell down the drain. And it's not even like we could've saved him.

Our manager already knew this.

Yep.

I'm may think AVB's a grumbling blert at times, but he's an excellent tactician, and knows his scouting. We have our differences, me and him, but he's a top manager.

Sahin's pretty much just a tour guide/party liaison nowadays, isn't he.

He's actually on the way back to his former self. Not at his best yet but he's been doing great for us in the last few matches, I think he started the last 6 or 7 Bundesliga matches.

Sure, CL is different. Gündogan is better and we need a true DM like Bender in those matches. No way to play for Sahin. Next season will be interesting, though. Will be a very tough choice between Gündogan and Sahin in the important matches.

Also, watch him destroy Bayern on Saturday ;-)

Sahin was and continues to be a case of wrong time and place.

He shouldn't have left Dortmund, especially for Madrid. I guess he was unlucky with his injuries but everyone knows what it's like at Madrid. If you don't get off to a flyer then it's a long long, often impossible, way back.

Sahins now had pretty much 2 seasons where he's doing nothing of much note or worth - that's a massive setback in a such a short and unforgiving career.

That shot of him at Anfield taking in YNWA was nice though.

Right now, I made up with the way we are going. I think a lot will depend on this summer though.

I reckon we need about 7 signings just to complete the squad (though probably only 2 first team players), and it's probably realistic we can bring in about 4 this summer. If they are the right 4, and at Studge/Coutinho levels of quality, we really will look a hell of a better team next year.

Also, credit to whoever's idea it was to bring in Dr Peters. Our club has been mentally fragile for so long that this was probably the best move we could have possibly made.

Bolded is very interesting.

Well Bundesliga is on Sky next year, so I imagine the coverage and excitement for it in the UK will skyrocket, probably leading me to watch more matches. Will keep my eye on Nuri, because I'm still fond of him despite his comments on Rodgers.

Football's going to be very strange for me next season. I'm buying an iPad and watching matches on my Nana's SkyGo, and I'll try and get to a game at the Emirates, WHL and Stamford Bridge. Fuck Upton Park, not arsed.

Mentally and physically. Just look at Agger and Gerrard now and 2 seasons ago.

Craven Cottage is a nice ground to go to Arnold, neutral end too. Easy to get tickets.

And you can watch Berbatov live, it's quite something.

Fucking hell we could be relegated tomorrow.

I can't go back to League One. Don't send me back there.

You won't, mate. I have faith.

Might not be able to make it to the match, although I'm crossing my fingers. Decked my face in this week and I've had a large graze/scab as it's healed. Waiting for the scab to fully heal underneath before I venture back into society, because stuff like laughing and talking too much makes it tear slightly and prevents it from healing. It's an absolute ball ache, I'm basically isolating myself from society until it's better.

Luckily there's enough football on telly this weekend to assist my recuperation.

Coutinho looks like a wonderful player. Really been impressed with Rodgers' coaching skills. The players have adapted well to his ideas.

Would love to see Arsenal bring in a younger manager when Wenger inevitably leaves. We need a breath of fresh air, some new ideas and methods.

Also I second this

Nice ground, good atmosphere if a tad quiet, cheapish tickets, easy to get away from comparatively. I liked the Cottage the few times I've been.

Looking at the Championship, the perfect results for me would be

Brighton to beat Wolves
Bolton to beat Blackpool
Peterborough to beat Palace
Cardiff to beat Hull
Watford to beat Leeds
Forest to beat Leicester
Wednesday to beat Middlesborough
Huddersfield to beat Barnsley

If this all came true I'd be delighted.
