AMD recently talked about their semi-custom business.

There is no way in Hell, MS could change some of its needs/designs in the last year considering the console architecture is at best partially co-developped...

MS fanboys, myself included, thought they would break the bank and build the perfect HTPC.
that was a wet dream.

those rumors are just the sticky side of waking up in warm bed after a wet dream.

That's one reason I keep touting it. Seems a drop in improvement just like Sony's 8GB was.

It's arguable how much they could take advantage of it with the supposed slow bus speeds though. Still, as I've said, it would allow them to reserve 3GB while still keeping 9GB for games, and if nothing else, excess could always be used to decrease loading.

This specs race must be bgassasin and the Wii U guys worst nightmare. "Bubu, they keep moving the goalposts that the Wii U was trying to hit!". Lol. I mean damn, Sony and MS aint playin...

I dunno, the more I think about it a simple upclock might be the lowest hanging fruit. Because I'm not sure the memory system can take advantage of 12GB...

Maybe an GPU upclock to 960. That would be ~14.5 TF I believe I've figured before. Close the gap with the PS4 enough to keep the IW and DICE guys happy?

I agree an upclock makes the most sense. However, if the rumors regarding them having trouble with heat are true, they probably won't. Unless, of course, that's why they are having heat problems.

At the moment if rumours are to be believed, Sony have more RAM visible to developers and it's faster. If they can't increase the speed to parity, shouldn't they at least try to hit parity on quantity?

Well, it's like putting 8GB RAM in a shitty low end PC GPU. The bandwidth isn't enough to really use it, so it's pointless.

If the rumors of the 360 architecture are true it only has 68GB/s of main BW. Although it also has ESRAM that shouldn't be taken lightly.

However I wouldn't say out of hand that isn't enough to use >8GB. I'm not a programmer working with the system to know that. At a guess it could be problematic though.

PS3 has 176 GB/s of main BW, so it's in a better position there.

I dunno man, Greenberg's tweet seems to be a pretty blatant hint. Put yourself in his shoes, he has to say something without saying anything...

There's other pieces too:

Sony's announced specs+increase to 8GB likely put pressure on MS to respond. It is likely MS NEEDS to stay close to the PS4 for porting purposes or risk developers wrath which could lead to loss of support in a worst case scenario.

Thurrott used the wording, in describing the Durango reveal delay, that it was to "better position against the PS4". Literally nothing fits that better than a spec upgrade.

Mark Rein hinted MS would respond to Sony's 8GB announcement, saying "cant wait to see how MS responds to this"

We will find out the 21st.

We will find out if they are delayed till 2014 (which is exactly what a major spec change this late will do). I can see up clocks happening if heat and thermals aren't a issue (and rumours say they are) but anything can happen I guess.

I seriously don't see any worth in trying to interpret a emoticon from a person who can literally not respond in any meaningful way, if they were silent people would take it bad, if they said yes they would get fired, the emoticon says nothing and is probably just to keep the peace.

Also I would like to see the B3D post you keep talking about saying that they can have any memory size upto 32GB without a major redesign just because its on B3D does not make it true.

He knows about a new Fable game and is looking forward to the reveal.
He is there to talk about Fable and present a new direction of some kind, or a new series.
He knows about a new game Lionhead is working on for longer now and will be a launch game.

I simply have no hype. MS is late, and whatever they will offer their strategy reeks of corporatism whereas Sony is risking its ass.
I admit loving backing the little guy, especially if he's worthy yet not perfect.

Does Patrick K work in the industry? If so, then Greenberg is just responding with a smile...I wouldn't look too much into this. On the other hand, if Patrick K is just a regular fan then I can't see why Greenberg would tweet back unless changes (probably insignificant) were made.

Nope - afaik he's a fan from germany. I had some conversation with him on twitter when I first spotted the Xboxevent.com site.

He didn't actually say anything.

I think, like before the Sony event, the best course is going to be to set level expectations based on what we've heard... anything else is just gravy.

Why would you respond to someone hoping that your specs have increased with a smile if your specs haven't changed? If there was no change wouldn't he just ignore it?
