Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

There is so much wrong in this thread it's a joke!

3DLand is one of the games of the generation! It embodies everything a mario game should be! tight, replayable. Just enough secrets.

Nintendo need to release more games like that and less like NSMB!

Thanks for your input.

The sad thing being that 3D Land feels like a console Mario game. It's that good.

OK, you convinced me.

  1. Neogaf's population is not representative of the general public and can not be extrapolated to gauge sales
  2. Thread replies/views are a meaningless metric since very niche games have way bigger threads than hugely selling games
  3. Thread replies/views are highly susceptible to other factors such as controversy and time of release
  4. Neogaf has frequently changed its Official Thread rules over the years, making it impossible to compare replies/views accurately
  5. You ignore conversation that occur outside of Official Threads, such as in LTTP threads
  6. You ignore the age of the threads

Therefore, the replies/views of a thread are not representative of a game's popularity, sales or quality.

3D Land is brilliant, but nobody gives a crap about it... Just like NewSMB U. :/

Didn't 3D land sell well though?
I sincerely hope so.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/3ds.html << Super Mario 3D Land is their best selling 3DS title so far.
Then why isn't this thread 30 pages long ? :/

Like I said previously, this game is just weirdly ignored/forgotten.

What the fuck, since when was thread length a quantifier of anything? You're acting as if the game is some niche third party title, it isn't. It's regularly still sold in bundles, and is usually top of the 3DS's shelf in retail.
1. Calm down, good sir.
2. I just think that the "replies" and "views" numbers are a pretty good indication of a game's popularity. Particularly on a large and very active forum like NeoGAF.

Galaxy OT : 14,128 replies - 973,903 views
Galaxy 2 OT : 9,069 replies - 622,519 views
3D Land OT : 4,384 replies - 288,231 views

The best and most ambitious portable Mario in history deserves more love and attention, IMO.
.

lol

I don't agree with the OT, I think both Galaxy games are better. 3D Land is too easy when you abuse the Tanooki suit, even with the difficulty spike going up when you reach the second part of the game. Still, it's the best handheld Mario since Super Mario Land 2 Six Golden Coins on Gameboy. It's even better.

I just 100% completed this two days ago. Somehow got back into it. Amazing game.

I guess I should say I've 99.5% completed it. I did the final, final level once through with Mario, but I've yet to do it with Luigi. I kept trying but Luigi's higher jump through me off. I'll go back to it, but is there anything after this other than bragging rights?

I think that has more to do with the permanent power ups than the controls, I never felt like I had as much control in 3D Land due to 8-way movement. But permanent power ups is something 3D Mario should stick with.

I would love to see a home console Mario that carries over some of these philosophies.

The power ups aren't timed, but they are gone if you're hit once. It's much less forgiving than timed power ups of previous games.

The point is: in SM3DL you kill enemies primarily by jumping on their heads because the controls are good enough for it. I re-played SMG2 after SM3DL and was shocked at how more floaty the controls were and how stomping enemies wasn't as easy or intuitive.

I think SM3DL is purposely made easier to make up for the controls. Trying to play 3D mario with a 3DS is not ideal and I believe Nintendo knows that and adjusted the difficulty accordingly. If I could play SM3DL with a Wiimote and nunchuk it would be easier.

And ?

I didn't care about sales, and I still don't. Even if I'm quite happy that Nintendo sold 8 millions copies. Totally deserved...

The "problem", in my opinion, is the lack of enthusiasm around this game, here on GAF, or on other VG forums. 3D Land is not as popular, "talked-about", as it should be (just like NSMBU).

PS : Might be the fact that I'm not using the word "popularity" the right way ? (as you can see, English is not my mother tongue). It is not synonymous with "commercial success" to me.

I do kind of understand understand what you mean, Setsuna. 3D Land's reception seems to have been more lukewarm compared to the other 3D Mario games (except for Sunshine I suppose). But "Popularity" might not be the right word to use, yeah.

Possible, I suppose.

But I'd raise issue with your assertion that the 3DS and 3DS XL have the same hardware. They obviously don't, given that they use different sized screens. Who can say where the differences end?

It's worth pointing out that even in the same line of devices hardware capability/details can differ. The best example is the PSX, where the later models actually rendered the graphics differently (shading, polygons) than the early models. But the same can be said for pretty much every console from Gameboy to Xbox and beyond.

Well I do think that's where the differences end. Obviously there's a difference in battery to accommodate for the larger screen, but there seem to be no other notable differences from what we know (which admittedly is limited to dissections and the like), so I think it's more likely that you're noticing differences because of the firmware update. But you're right, there might be more we don't know of!

So playing with a single analog stick and face buttons is harder to control a platformer than...

...a single analog stick with face buttons?

Agreed a hundred percent. I'm not entirely certain 3D Land is above the Galaxy series (never played those games) but I completed the game over Christmas on my nephew's 3DS XL and was shocked at how good the game was. It's a game that is definitely on par if not superior to Mario 64. Nintendo development at its finest. Every second of the game is an enjoyable experience. It's a joy to play and one of the primary reasons to get a 3DS.

My nephew also had New Super Mario Bros 2 (which I played to completion) and I felt 3D Land was far superior. NSMB2 was good but 3D Land was on another level.

i just want to say i could play mario 3d land a million times over. it is SHEER GAMING GOODNESS.

literally, if we got super mario 3dland 2 for 3ds. uh YESS.

I've just got a 3DS and I'm really enjoying 3D Land, probably the first time in many years I've enjoyed a Mario game.

Galaxy just felt a bit too chaotic and just annoying to play.

Yeah, I just meant that I like how powerups function like in 2D games. The game becomes a little to easy with them on though imo. Especially the raccoon suit. Obviously this could be pretty easy to fix by simply making the game harder.

With SM3DL Nintendo created a new kind of Mario game and I think it deserves to be re-visited more. A SMG2-style sequel would be glorious. Heck, I would take even a big DLC expansion.

3D Land is a very different kind of 3D Mario compared to the others. It's almost like SMB3 in 3D.

Agreed.

64 > World > 3DLand > Galaxy > SMB > 3 > Galaxy 2 > YI > 2 > Lost Levels > Sunshine > Land > NSMBU > NSMBW > Land 2 > NSMB2 > NSMB

As different as Galaxy is to Mario 64, in fine.

But your comparison is quite right, Magicpaint. 3D Land really is faster paced, more "intense" than its 3D predecessors (particularly SM64). More focused on platforming than exploration, like a 2D game.

But "Popularity" might not be the right word to use, yeah.
My bad, then.

Got it yesterday, really enjoying it so far. It definitely makes the 3D sweet spot stand out in a really negative way, though; for me at least playing it without 3D on can be a huge pain in the ass since the perspective seems off a lot of the time, so I'm forced to play it in 3D where you need to hold it just right. First 3DS game for me so I guess it's just an adjustment thing, but the 3D (even though it looks pretty good some of the time) has been a pretty big negative for me so far.

Soundtrack isn't great either.

Agreed.

64 > World > 3DLand > Galaxy > SMB > 3 > Galaxy 2 > YI > 2 > Lost Levels > Sunshine > Land > NSMBU > NSMBW > Land 2 > NSMB2 > NSMB

Anyone who puts what is almost a Ti-81 Calculator game Mario Land over any of the Marios is a loon or is running off of nostalgia fumes. Take your pick.

I honestly think there's some sort of problem with your thumb if you hate the circle pad. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the PSP's corrugated nipple.

I love the circle pad, it's great. Compared to the psp's worst analogue stick of all time it's a godsend, even without that comparison it's great.

okay

that's like comparing shit to polished shit

I want to play 3D Land with a real analog stick. Wii U analog stick is god tier.

In that case it's fortunate that, aside from their Game & Watch legacy, Nintendo have never released such a game in the franchise.

Sunshine is so underrated. It has some of the best level design in the entire series. FLUDD-less levels = gaming nirvana.

Galaxy isn't as dramatically different. It's still objective based like SM64 which was already a huge departure, but it does tone down the exploration and open-endedness and of course the new gravity mechanics add a new dimension. Still, they're cut from the same cloth.

The FLUDD-less levels are great which makes the rest of the game feel shit.

It feels like a generic 3D platformer with a dumb gimmick. It's nowhere near Galaxy or 64 except when there's no FLUDD.

Personally I loved how much the FLUDD added to Mario's moveset and really made him incredibly versatile. I liked having a mix, though I would have liked even more FLUDD-less levels.

It really says a lot about the quality of this series when the worst game on that list was still a landmark of entertainment in my life, with unforgettable memories playing multiplayer at work in our cubicles.

Depends if you mean the multiplayer with Mario and Luigi and minigames. The latter was easily the best multiplayer fun you could have on the DS.

So, I got SML3D like 2 days ago.

I know it's supposed to bite-sized, but man, the game is so easy (just started the special levels). It's my biggest fault with the game, as I'm flying through it. I'd hope for at least leaderboards/other competitive features for replays, but I'm not really seeing that. Mind you, I do enjoy the game, it's just the Mario itch I've been looking for. I also wished there were a ton of touch-based minigames like the DS version. I also owned Mario Kart 7 and was disappointed with how barebones it was.

The only other Mario game I've owned/played through is Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for GBC.

Mario games (and Nintendo games in general) are why I want GC, Wii, Wii U, but since all I have is a 3DS, I'm limited.

I remember playing Sunshine and loving how open that game was. I really wish SML3D was more like that. I'm guessing the main Mario games have open worlds, unlockable areas, side-missions, etc?

Do you guys think we'll see games like SMSunshine ported to 3DS? I'd love to finally own and try a full Mario experience.

I think Sunshine is great and all, but the game has some shitty levels and the camera has to be one of the worst in a Nintendo game, it just actively acted against the player. Personally though, I feel the level-design is the weakest of the 3D games, but I'll agree that I still think it's underrated. FLUDD gets too much shit, I had a ton of fun screwing around with that.

This is a random question, but how do those Mystery Box streetpass things work in this game? I got a couple of them last night in the city and tried them out, then noticed a third one this afternoon at home when I checked my 3DS as it was charging. I don't think it's very likely that I got a Streetpass in the apartment, so I'm just trying to figure out if this was somehow a leftover one from being out and about last night or not.
