I find it odd that Sony would announce so early. Maybe they needed the hype train chugging along because ms has some serious hardware like old rumors would indicate. Just a thought. If ms was going to go out and announce a weak kinect box wouldn't have been best that Sony wait to announce.

everything was leaking...pics of controller, final specs, gaf insiders were even hinting about some games. they did the right thing by announcing

One last thing, my fellow game developer colleagues have pretty much said that they believe the Xbox is severely more powerful than the PS4, they were very surprised with just how much.. They've spent a great deal of effort reducing certain game textures/animations and the engine in general just to get a decent 60fps on the PS4. Clearly in their eyes the Xbox is leaps and bounds ahead of the PS4.

Come on. At least make it plausible.

durango is early november, paul is the real deal.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a late September / early October launch. Get the initial push from the core that want the system now and try and satisfy those needs while building stock of consoles up for the holiday push starting in November.

God damn, that's so far away....

This is what I suspected. Again, go off what we KNOW.

Sony came out publicly and stated they'd let MS go first. Then after hearing rumblings of 8GB of ram and a pretty beastly new Xbox, Sony holds an early event that surprises just about everyone. To add to the surprises, they even upped the RAM from 4 to 8GB without even 1st party devs knowing.

So yeah, my assumption would be that MS has something special up their sleeve. But not necessarily specs. I think its something to do with the OS personally. I think from a spec perspective, it will be like the PS3 vs 360. An advantage, but nothing extraordinary. I think MS has a killer feature or two planned for the OS that people haven't thought of yet.

I'd hardly call a 1.23TFLOPS machine beastly.

I'm still relatively confident in my September prediction.

Late September seems plausible. Especially if Microsoft wants to get out a little ahead of PS4. I wonder if we will have a situation where both PS4 and Durango launch the same day. Last time that happened was the Gamecube and Xbox.

My September prediction came from the GTA delay. Pure speculation of course.

I suspect Microsoft (again, based on known history) money hatted Rockstar again, and asked they delay the game until launch of the new Xbox, and simultaneously release a 360 version, and then release an up res Durango version for launch. September means plenty of time in before Christmas, and also gives time for more games that miss launch to release before Christmas.

September would also lend credence to the 6 months behind rumour given the timing of that rumour was almost exactly 6 months before the end of September.

I really want a next gen version of GTAV... Imagine the meltdowns if it is really 720 exclusive.

I'd hardly call a 1.23TFLOPS machine beastly.

Rumor has it they bumped clocks up maybe 7790 level(1.79Ghz??) and with a 32mb block of Esram Cache it should be quite beefy.
And Durango has from what i heard a very nice Audio hardware built in not sure if ps4 also has the rumored SHAPE block.

That is good enough to help them, see Bioshock. When it released on other it didn't even matter.

For GTA to "not matter" the exclusivity period would need of be MINIMUM one year.

If Microsoft release the Xbox mini and clear out inventory of the disc based 360, then I don't see money being a problem. If I was Microsoft, I'd be going the Poker route and really leaning on my opponent with the larger chip pile in their face.

I go off what we KNOW.

Major Nelson had a countdown. It was to E3.

Post Sony reveal, they now have their own reveal for pre-E3.

The Xbox 360 reveal was at the same time. Just before E3. To me, this means one of two things.

This was the plan all along, or, they've created this small preview as an answer to Sony's reveal.

Anything else is a rumour based on a rumour based on a rumour.

So what? It was just a countdown to E3. I have no idea why people read so much into this. A pre-E3 event was the plan all along. The 3 week delay was not.

Doesn't it seem odd to send out invites the day it was supposed to have happened? I still think Microsoft is right on with their plan, I mean it lines up with how they announced the 360. Announce in May, E3 was a week later in May that year as well.

Yeah, it worked well for them last time. I'm interested to see the format for the announcement. Is there any indication of the scale of the event yet?

Yea but the people from that time aren't here anymore. Not sure if it was them that set up the dates though. The event is only an hour.

You missed the general gist of that conversion with up jump the boogie. My point was that i don't believe the rumors of any delay.

Personally, I also think may was the intention all along. Just like the 360. But of course, like all the negative bullshit surrounding the Durango, the delay is now essentially considered fact because of rumors.

My suggestion was, that if anything, based on what we know, it could have in fact been the complete opposite of a delay, which is that a may event wasn't the intention at all. So to try and clear up, I'm not saying that May wasn't the intention, I was merely trying to explain why we shouldn't believe rumors, and that we should goi based off actual tangible information that we know is accurate as opposed to rumours.

Nope, I get your point. I'm just saying that the countdown clock he posted is no indication that it was 'their plan all along'. It was just a countdown clock for E3. That is all it was. Look at it again.

I know. I know. I was just...

It's ok. Don't worry. I'm obviously not explaining myself properly, and I'm not sure how else to explain it.

gta 5 is on both next gen consoles

It'll be funny because if they come out at a Microsoft event the first thing that will happen is people proclaiming Xbox exclusive even if they are planning on bringing it to both systems. It will be a volatile time on the internet in 2 weeks.

actually chances of that happening is low. These games costs 100m+ to develop. As the console war ends, the victor will force publishers to make exclusives but at launch its very obvious to expect the big franchises to be on both next gen consoles

I still feel MS should delay their launch by 6months and come up with a better HW

Why? There's no need to.

6 months is not nearly enough time to redo hardware. Also, Microsoft is in a much better position to throw around some serious money than Sony is. I'm not saying it'll happen, but if a company were to do it, it would be Microsoft.

As for picking sides for exclusives, you're more likely to see that at the beginning of the generation rather than the tail end. Development costs at the beginning of a gen are higher as teams learn new SDKs and hardware and drop off as companies like Epic crank out engines that smaller teams can pick up and not have to worry about "coding to the metal". Companies like Microsoft or Sony will front a good portion of those development costs early on to land a killer app early in the console's life. Look at this generation, pretty much every 3rd party title for the last 1-2 years has been on each system, where as early on you saw Mass Effect and Bioshock coming to the 360 first than much later on to the PS3.

I doubt it.

I think GTAV's move was more about how packed Q1/Q2 were, and the game could use a bit extra time.

GTAV's release date is conveniently placed in a lull right before next-gen and holiday titles hit, so they'll get the limelight to themselves for a while.

I find it humorous to hear people almost worried about Microsoft money hatting exclusives, and writing it off as "not worth it" for third parties.

It is completely worth it at the start of the generation when dev costs are high, and sales aren't guaranteed due to small install bases. That's precisely the time to take dat cash. A studio is being guaranteed money regardless of the games performance, AND saving themselves the cost and effort of porting.

Why wouldn't they do it?

Yea, exactly. This is why the Respawn rumor makes sense. Get a ton of cash heading into a new generation to learn a new system and in return give up your first game for what will probably be a timed exclusive. If there is one thing Microsoft has done that I do like, it is the use of timed exclusives versus all out. Let the love be shared of great games to everyone.
