Darknessbear coming out with all the lame retorts while getting slammed by facts. The XBL sale was great. Very late in the gen, but great. No need to try and talk it down with lame excuses. Is it a sign of things to come (better sales in future) or Microsofts last attempt at making a bit of money on those games?

I think a lot of their sales and promotions lately are due to revenue being generated by XBL game sales (both arcade and GoD) are way down. This generation has gone on too long. Personally I haven't bought anything from the service in months, and won't until they announce whether or not the next Xbox is backwards compatible. If it is, I'll start spending the MSP.

I actually assmed the big sale was to apologise in advance to no BC in the new Xbox.

But to actually get people replacing their discs with DDs for the Xbox mini.

I have a spare 4GB, ill sell that off for the mini. Pack my Halo 4 LE away.

My current plan is to dump my PS3 towards the price of either a PS4 or next Xbox. Also toying with the idea of just going with an Xbox and then supplementing that with a Samsung Series 7 Chronos gaming laptop. Used one the other day and it played Crysis 3 on its highest settings really well. Also recently fell in love with Windows 8 (says a lot coming from a MacOS lover). If Microsoft finds a way to make the app store on Win 8 playable on the next Xbox, they've made my decision even easier. Addicted to Taptiles.

I do!

... what discounts? Like those spring sales they use to do? Weren't those for anyone though?

Microsoft does their deal of the week and sometimes some good GoD sales but nothing like PS+. Sony does a good job in giving day 1 discounts to PS+ members. That's what I want MS to do.

Yes! I dream of a mix of Roku with XMBC/Plex and be able to remote control from cell phones/Tablets.

I have Plex on my PC but I don't want my PC to be on all time.

I hope they tie in the Windows ecosystem with this somehow (WP8, W8, etc.) could be pretty unique.

Am I the only one excited about the HTPC capabilities?

I want a Roku but I am waiting for more Xbox details.

I'm pretty interested to see what they do. As clunky as it is, until recently I was using my 360 as my primary means of watching things on my TV. In fact I would have been using it more for that than games.
Upgrading that and combining it with some kind of IPTV box would be a pretty compelling for me. Well as compelling as it can be outside of the States. They have been offering Foxtel streaming here in Australia, if that was bundled with the subscription price I'd be pretty tempted.

Me too. Been using Win 8 the past month or so and it's great. I was staunchly with Apple since the lousy Vista, but this OS won me back. I love the integration of XBL, achievements, games/apps etc. I don't think there's any way that the new Xbox doesn't integrate it all to some degree. The question is just how open will they be with the App store to indies/devs. Right now the Win8 app store is my go-to shop for puzzle games.

I hope MS shows something good, because nothing I know of right now (rumors) will win me back to Xbox. Windows 8 is pure garbage and I hope they do not use anything from that travesty of an OS and integrate it with the new xbox, and paying to play online is not what I want at all. If they continue to lock MP behind a paywall they have lost me for good. I am already buying the PS4, but I hope MS can do something for me to be excited about the Xbox for a future purchase.

See, I hope they totally integrate Windows 8. I only had the pleasure to use the Beta (was my main OS for several months) and I absolutely loved it. Also, I wouldn't be too keen on sticking to the paywall for multiplayer stuff. Not much wiggle room if Sony implements it. Can always just say it doesn't matter then though.

I used windows 8 for a good month just to see if there was something I was missing, but coming from OSX and Windows 7, I just couldn't stand it. I hate the start screen, it has no place on a desktop or laptop. The removal of the start button makes me angry because I don't want to access files from the start screen, nor should I have to download a program and pay for a start button. I mess with files a lot and having extra button clicks when they were not there before is just wtf to me. I hate the design as well, it looks like a OS created by 12 year olds. I do not want it anywhere near the xbox. I admit I am an apple user first and foremost, but Windows 7 was a great OS and Windows 8 seems like a massive step backwards for no good reason other then to try to push touch where it is not needed.

Windows 8 is a huge step forward. Also helps that it's incredibly fast and memory efficient. Finding, installing and running apps on Win 8 completely blows away the MacOS experience. As a Mac owner I wouldn't have believed it, but they won me over. Enough so that my next laptop won't be coming from Apple. The next Xbox needs to integrate with the Win 8 AppStore. Would be a huge misstep IMO if it doesn't. Kinect controls, if more accurate than current Kinect, would be great with a similar interface. But holy crap if they use the same voice recognition software from Win 8 in the new Xbox, it's going to be awful. I used it in Win 8 and it missed nearly ever word. Then I loaded Google voice and it never missed a single one.

I don't like Windows 8 on a desktop but you'll be interacting with the console in a very different way compared to mouse + keyboard. I would imagine a stripped down metro version of Win 8 will be user friendly enough for a console.

Why does it need anything to do with a failed OS? (Microsoft is not happy with Windows 8) They should make it a fresh new experience, not use something that nobody wants.

Because they want to push one of their major product lines with another of their major product lines?

I really don't understand the pining for the start button. I swear on my computer with Windows 8 I press it like once a week. I do admit the start screen isn't the best for mouse, but it's glorious for touch. I can't see why it wouldn't be equally good with Kinect.

I'd respond, but it's kinda hard to take anything you just said seriously since none of it is actually true.

The Start screen works fine for me with touch or without. I've found it's much quicker to navigate the OS than it is in MacOS. And the functionality of the old Start Bar is still there (simply right click on Start instead of left click). Shrug. People hate change, I guess. Even when it's better. It'll all just be noise in the not so distant future.

Some people use the start menu a lot (I know weird right?), and when they take that away and make me pay for an alternative then we have a problem. Your OS is known to have the start button, don't get rid of it, add more to it and make it even more powerful. Not make it a whole screen full of unnecessary apps that were already fine the way they were.

Many other articles that I can link as well. It is a failure so far. It has done worse than Vista. You can say I am wrong all you want, but the facts do not lie.

I should have clarified my statement "failure so far".

I've got Windows 8 installed on the 4th HDD bay of my MacPro. Its great. Got me back into PC gaming.

Guntringer Dead Mans Run is cool.

To have a stage all to themselves and then double back and share the E3 hype also? Seems like a good way to go in with momentum. I mean, I guess it could be spun to be a bad thing but it would make one awful dizzy.

Not that I buy into the idea that MS originally intended to debut this thing at E3, but if you're gonna wait this long you might as well just double down and own all the E3 buzz.

So yeah, the scheduling seems a bit shit.

No way. E3 time is still shared time. Rather you spread things out than have stuff mushed together and press overlook a lot of it just to highlight the key points and move onto the next conference. Doubling down is just less net exposure.

Even if its close to E3, it still keeps and strengthens the buzz being in close proximity. Moreso than the PS Meeting anyways.

Indeed, they have to stand out with the reveal, at E3 everyone will be dropping bombs.

Especially difficult to wow at E3 when you are giving your presser at the exact same time as the Apple WWDC keynote. Guess what the internet will be focusing on?

Plus, May 21st will probably be mainly about the hardware and E3 will probably be mainly about the games.

Microsoft at most gets about three weeks of media attention, and probably not even that since the two weeks before E3 are dedicated to speculation. Right now everyone's attention is focused on MS. The day after the 21st that won't be the case.

If you think they'll struggle to stand out by announcing at E3, what chance do they have with just one of several bloated E3 conferences? I would have loved to see MS do a tightly scheduled two hour conference with none of the usual E3 filler. Even Sony's conferences drag on to the point where I'm just pissing away time waiting for the big reveal. Having the biggest E3 reveal with the most to report might also have created the perception that MS stole the show or "won" E3.

I think that after E3 everything starts over. There will be so much new information from both Microsoft and Sony that whatever happened in the last two months wont matter much.

It's having the same effect on me. The app store + steam is just awesome. The entire OS just runs great. The only complaint I have is with search, and I hear they're fixing it in the service pack.

I'm a Playstation fan, but Robbie Bach and J Allard........wow.

You guys remember J Allard's Email message?

Also found an old interview with Robbie Bach

Those guys man.

Along with Peter Moore, they made the Xbox brand the beast that it is today.

Huge respect for them and I could only imagine the wonders of the nextbox if they where behind it.

But your post about liking Windows 8 was a joke, right? It's an abomination.

It's really not. I find people who say that haven't actually used it.

All they did, was take the original start menu, and give it its own interface. It's almost completely optional, and there are free programs for the whiners to get their start button back.

Aside form that, it's leaner, faster and more stable than any windows before it. Yeah, what an abomination.

Actually no. Mattrick is the reason it's been number 1 in the US for over 2 years. The revisionist history on the 360 is a bit ridiculous at this point.

They were all important for getting Xbox 360 where it is today, both the good things and the bad things. People have the tendency to only remember the good things (especially when it suits them), so it's easy to forget how everyone hated those guys for things like RRoD, paid Live subscriptions, pricey peripherals and so on.

I really want a dedicated Plex app on Durango. When I'm home I can access my Plex server from my PS3 or 360, but when I take my console to someone else's house it doesn't work. I'm kind of confident it will happen on Durango seeing how Microsoft wants the Xbox to be the only box you have and that Plex has an app on almost every single platform available.

Also, I'm curious to see who's going to be on stage when they reveal the console and talk about the specs and features. This is the list I can come up with:

Steve Ballmer - HIGHLY unlikely, but if Bill Gates could reveal an Xbox in a leather jacket with The Rock, why not?
Don Mattrick - The likely choice. I like Mattrick, he's a smart dude with REAL game dev experience, but man he's not a good public speaker.
Phil Harrison - Would be absolutely weird to see him at a MS event.
Phil Spencer - I think he'll be the one to talk about first party durange games.
Major Nelson - Unlikely, I think he said on his podcast he's going to be backstage.
Marc Whitten - He's usually been the guy at E3 to talk about new Xbox Live features and I remember him unveiling SmartGlass.
Laura Massey - She's a software engineer so she has probably worked on Durango. Plus after the overreaction online about Sony not having any females on stage, they might pick her.

I have a funny feeling that the new app store will be open to far more developers than before. So something like this won't be unrealistic to expect.

But there are so much new stuff, and I don't like new stuff. It confuses me.

They've already announced it's Don.

Yep. I fully expect it to be open to any developer that already developers for Windows 8 or Windows Phone.

They'll be talking about the Xbox at Build in June (after E3), something that I don't think they've done before

I expect they'll show how easy it is port a Windows 8 app to Durango, which will probably just involve a simple update to Visual Studio.

What I really hope they do is give app developers full access to Kinect. If the rumours are true and they're including a Kinect in every box I don't see why they can't.

Definitely. There is no doubt they will and it could be an awesome impulse for both Xbox as well as the Windows eco system.

I just hope they revamp the store to something proper. Neither the current Xbox store nor the Windows 8 App store is good (enough) imo.

I understand what you're saying but I still think it's beneficial to have a day to yourself, completely away from the E3 hoopla. It's basically ensuring 2 different sets of media coverage. And look on the bright side, at least there's a few weeks in between them. The "project natal" unveiling was the same week as E3 if I'm not mistaken.

Fucking space ponchos.

Wndows 7 uses much of this travesty and its great,

It really is just a better performing win 7 with the start bar moved, I cannot see the drama at all.

simply because most people don't like waving their arms around to do stuff that can be done with button presses quicker.
