So what's expected from the retail meeting? Will anyone be reporting from it, or is it all NDA'd?

What retail meeting?

More than likely we won't hear anything until the 21st. Even if there is some retail meeting happening before then, hopefully nothing leaks. I'm sick of so many different rumors at this point and just want to hear the official info.

I really hope Microsoft brings the thunder and the rain. I'm pulling for them but my wallet is gonna cry hard if I have to get this and a PS4. I'm taking the day off for this presentation. B^)

I don't think it was a retail meeting it was a internal event to show the console to the rest of Microsoft.

iOS is fucking trash, man

The only thing that iOS has going for it is consistency and visual cues.

They can fix W8- the problems aren't that big.

Agreed about iOS. It's awful. Just weak. Win 8 will get some tweak, whereas iOS is in need of an overhaul, which it sounds like Jonny Ive is doing right now. I hope he succeeds as well as the Metro team. I also hope he then moves on and breathes fresh life into MacOS. Looking forward to seeing how Win 8 is implemented in the next Xbox. If they don't tie into the app store heavily, it's going to be a major missed opportunity. They have the potential to dwarf any indie effort Sony or Nintendo could come close to mustering.

Yeesh. Yeah, Windows 8 is straight up garbage in terms of UI. Sure it's an improvement when it comes to performance, but at the expense of useability. It is god-awful, the metro-UI is a disaster and it better be significantly redesigned for Durango's sake. Well below something like iOS.

If you're going to compare Windows 8 to iOS, then you should compare Windows 8 on a tablet to iOS. You can say what you want about Windows 8 on the desktop (though I personally disagree with them), but on a tablet Windows 8 is fantastic. Better than iOS in my opinion.

Also I really doubt the UI will be redesigned for Durango, since navigating the Windows 8 start menu with a 360 controller is actually a very nice way to use Windows 8. Especially when you're using a TV.

We need another:

And more:

Would not be surprised if the Kinect requirement is because of the metro UI. Since Kinect II is rumored to be much better, I actually wouldn't have a problem navigating a metro UI with my finger/ entering data with voice or finger as long as there are other options. Sounds kind of fun.

I know a lot of people hate the idea of it though

Have you tried navigating Xbox 360's UI with Kinect? It doesn't even matter if Kinect 2.0 is 1:1. Navigating menus with your hand from a couch is slow. You'd still have to wait for the icon to circle on the item you're trying to select. It all sounds cool, and at first it is, but it is the worst way navigating menus. If holograms were being projected out that you could manipulate with your hands, then we'd have something.

I don't hate the idea. I just find it completely useless. Even if Kinect 2.0 can finger track, it does nothing for me.

I can navigate fine with a controller.

this is probably because the console UI wasn't designed around Kinect being universal.

Well even with Kinect 1.0 it's possible to select stuff by just opening and closing your hand, so I'd imagine Kinect 2.0 would have no problem in that regard.

I dont have a problem doing everything with a controller if I'm going to be playing games. I think voice control is much better if you're turning your console on to watch movies or listen to music.

It's really not. I find people who say that haven't actually used it.

All they did, was take the original start menu, and give it its own interface. It's almost completely optional, and there are free programs for the whiners to get their start button back.

Aside form that, it's leaner, faster and more stable than any windows before it. Yeah, what an abomination.
What the fuck is the point of this comment? That there aren't valid objections to Windows 8? That I'm lying and your opinion is somehow more valid? There are a dozen threads in off-topic if you want to read "whiners" lay out their arguments. I don't care if there are free programs, I shouldn't have to download anything. It's atrocious.

If you like Windows 7, and have used Windows 8 then I don't see what the issue is. You can stay in desktop mode almost exclusively. So I don't see the problem.

Someone hold me back

Why?

I'm a Mac user anyway. Have been since Vista, which pissed me off to no end. So I'm currently hip deep in Apples ecosystem. But having a MacPro makes it easy and convenient to give myself the option to run Windows without affecting my Mac OS.

It's really nowhere near as bad as many make it out to be. Funny enough, even when I actively try to stay in Metro mode, I end up mostly in desktop mode, so I'm amazed so many complain about metro mode when the computer almost doesn't want to spend much time in it. But then the number 1 thing I do on my Windows partition is use Steam. That might have something to do with it.

whats the problem with windows 8 ? i used it for a few months and the only thing that bugged me was the missing start button. bought that stardock software and it was back again.

It bugs me that this company (Stardock) is making loads of money with that crap.

No one is hip deep in Apples ecosystem. Apple is balls deep in you.

My situation is similar to yours. Left the Windows ecosystem when Vista released. I love MacOS but its app store implementation is crappy, and we all know how awful the games situation is on a Mac. But running Win 8 on it has been a godsend. Much better OS, incredibly speedy to navigate, and the implementation of the app store is something I hope Apple copies (since it really just looks like Microsoft copied the iOS appstore anyway). Hopefully they spend a bit of time on the Xbox implementation of the OS during the reveal.

It bugs me that this company (Stardock) is making loads of money with that crap.

It amazes me how many people whine about the Start button, and don't know that you can essentially get it back by right clicking on start instead of left clicking. People hate change though. That's one that never changes. One thing is clear though, this is definitely the direction the OS needed to go.

Might as well just stick with 7 if you need to buy a program to get something good that was native in the last OS.

Wait, why? Almost all indies use steam not windows 8 app store, or they use Desura. Once again MS is late to the party. Plus if they do not let off on fees then it wont matter even if they do tie it in. I am sure they will as Sony has been, and they do not want them to win outright, but you never know with MS. I wouldn't count Sony out either, as they have two consoles that the indies can develop for and use cross buy. Most Pc gamers use steam, not the windows 8 app store. So how will they dwarf them in any way? Sure they can put it on the Windows 8 app store and it works with the Xbox or vice versa, but they could also put it on Steam (which they most certainly would do before putting it on the windows 8 app store) and then just put it out on PS4 and the next Xbox. Not many people are using Windows 8 so it makes more sense to put it out on what people do have, which is windows 7, Vista,Xp, and OSX (which steam works with all of them). Then port it to the consoles. Far more ways to make money instead of tying it in to only two stores.

I was just thinking of that. This might be why Sony is contacting so many indie developers. If 720 sells well or atleast equal to PS4 and is easy to port to, your favorite indie game will probably be there, whether MS reaches out to anyone specifically or not. Sony needs to convince developers to develop for the PS4.

Yeah I've never actually used Kinect to navigate menus, or at all. So maybe it is a terrible idea.

More PC gamers may use Steam, but more PC users use the Apps. The masses determine what's successful. PC gaming isn't thriving because of Steam. It's thriving because of games not on Steam (and not on the App store for that matter). I didn't count Sony out. It's good that they're finally waking up to the fact that indies are popular.

Yep. Having the huge Windows 8 audience and the next Xbox audience would be a huge plus for Microsoft. Only question now is if they view it that way.

I'm guessing that voice is more of a factor here than the hand motions. And it would also necessitate an always-on connection to function properly. Perhaps the root of some of the rumors.

This is going really offtopic, sorry.
It valetes itself on peoples habits. Plus I find it weird that so many Windows 7 users are using that Start button anyway - I never touched that thing - it's a slow menu.

Back on Xbox reveal topic yall!

Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean other people don't. It's an integral feature of Windows. I'm a Metro fan btw, so I don't see the point of not including both.

i honestly cant wait for the reveal. i want to see some new ips. that marlow briggs trademark was gaming related right ?
as a shooter fan, i think next gen is gonna be glorious :)

I assumed that many Windows applications are compatible with the app store, i.e they could work on 7 and etc as well but with little modifications they could be put on the Win8 app store. I'm not really sure if that's true.

Is this true? If not, how much work would it take for something to be in the condition to be put on the app store? What would be necessary?

edit: So it seems like that was a false assumption by me. Windows software isn't as compatible with WindowsRT as I thought. But I don't really understand anyone of this, so I guess I'll find out after they announce it.

edit edit : also there's still a bunch of apps in the store that are in RT that would be cool to see on 720
Build 2013 is happening in late June and Xbox will be represented there for the first time so we will probably get answers then on cross-app development.
yeah

I think it's interesting that there are tons of hardware rumors but almost nothing for software rumors. To me that still gives me reason to be excited. Just over 2 weeks!

The Verge ran the rumors of the launch software and Thurott confirmed he heard about the same titles.

I do believe the rumor of Microsoft having crazy design on the dev kits that can be traced back if a picture does leak.

I wonder if we'll see Ubisoft showing Watch_Dogs again. Anything short of Bethesda being there will be a disappointment to me.

I don't think Ubisoft will show up because they have deals with Sony for Watch Dogs and Assassins Creed.

It's also very close to E3 so if they have a new IP I think they would hold it till E3.

After the announcement of Ghosts showing up at the event, I don't expect Respawn to show up.
My guesses (apart from Ghosts) :
- Exclusive racer (Forza or PGR)
- Rare's game
- GTAV next gen version
- some kid/family kinect game

Yes, I got it, but I mean some devs actually have the kits, it is easy to take a picture, some phoyoshop, and upload to internet. It always happen.

I actually wonder why this doesn't happen even with the stripes on the kits. They could easily just edit them out or change them.

My guess would probably be:

COD Ghosts with announcement of the 1 month exclusive DLC
Rare's Kinect Game
Racing game
I think they might put an indie developer to announce their plans with indies

Even when I guess that you have to remember they only got 1hr to announce the console and the features and show some games. Wouldn't shock me if they only show 2-3 games only.
