Not sure why Paul Thurrott is getting so much flak here as some kind of untrustworthy source. Over the past few years, he has been spot on almost everytime when it came to Windows/Microsoft products. He is also dedicated to covering all things Microsoft as a journalist.

Sure he might not have wanted to commit to what always online meant, but he said himself he was basing that off documentation.

I think the problem is that Thurrott's source and Edge's source may be the same person who was unaware of what 'always online' actually meant internally. If this source is working on the engineering behind the button that ejects the disc, they may have no idea what 'Always Online' means for the console as a whole.

You realize he's one of the most respected tech journos around right?

That shows how low the bar is.

He publishes articles and goes on podcasts saying 'requires always online connection', and then somebody tweets asking if you have to be online to play games, and then he says "no idea".

It is irresponsible, but this is 2013 and journalism in most facets of society is completely dead.

Well, it's pretty simple. Know what you are talking about when you report it.

SUCCESS!!!

woooo. good news.

i kinda wanted them to try it though... wouldve been an epic blowback

edit: well auto shutoffs would suck still.

lol

Some people will still insist that it needs to be online, don't worry.

This is only because literally every bit of information we have seen says this lol.

The very specific language of this email is odd. I mean why not just come out and say there is no always online Sony did this right away. Why all the obfuscation by Microsoft?

Ubi has already dropped always online and I can't see EA trying it again. I'm sure that there will be network features through Uplay and Origin but I doubt they'll do DRM.

A new generation presents new possibilities...

I'm sure they'll couch it in, "There are multiplayer aspects that require the connection at all times," even if they're minimal at best. I wouldn't count it out for blanket use. I'd hope for everyone's sake it isn't used, I'm just not convinced.

Waiting to see how this works before I buy. Nextbox will need to have some very compelling exclusives for me to purchase though, regardless of how the online activation works, now that nearly everything I want to play has a PC version.

There is a reason more specific leaks haven't come from Microsoft yet, they're controlling information very tightly.

Also, you can accuse Microsoft of many things, but being ahead of damaging rumors they have never.

Oh cool, can you show me the press release

Or even any evidence

Evidence? Check the OP.

Seriously, equating an internal Microsoft email to a dubious rumor carrying multiple "things could have changed" provisos based on early 2012 spec leaks is stupid. Never mind the fact that many of the people who towed that line have changed their tune on exactly what "always online" could actually mean or imply.

Ars is legit and there's no reason to suggest this isn't legit either.

I was hoping it would be always online and that sales would prove that the mass consumer doesn't give a fuck one way or the other and end this debate altogether.

I don't know what to believe anymore. But this email seems strange to me. Shouldn't something like this have been known to the people who are directly working, marketing and involved with the hardware like.....a long fucking time ago? How does that not have an affect on...everything, from development to product perception?

Again, all very strange. I hope for the consumers sake this ends up being a reality so we can move on and worry about actual games.

Finally some good news. Now hopefully we can ditch the Kinect. If MS does that I'll take the next Xbox along with the PS4.

It means that even without internet, console will still operate and inform you that you need to be online to proceed further.

Oh cool, can you show me the press release

Or even any evidence

Personally Im skeptical of any site but articles do warrant discussion.

Why need a press release to counteract a rumor made or interpreted incorrectly / intentionally by some insiders ?

Word is literally all over the map o this deal.

This is encouraging news, but honestly we've had so many reports of the "always on" thing somehow I doubt this is true.

I mean. how would this be any different than the current Xbox 360 structure if it was true?

How can a console be "Always online" if it isn't really required to be "always online".

You're either always online or not.

If this is true than the console isn't anymore "Always Online" than the 360 is.

you are aware that nothing was officially announced either way? They did not add or remove anything

No, but it's fun to rationalize disdain. I think Sony originally planned to charge $1,299 for the PS4 and require a Google Fiber account for the device to function. I'm not going to congratulate them for not proceeding with that fantasy.

I think there is an element of truth to it. That is the ONLY reason they haven't made a statement denying it. I mean you act like they are holding everything close to the chest when we already know about illumiroom and we even know the price points, gimme a break about them not wanting to divulge info. For some reason the always online DRM details are being kept secret for a reason.

The email makes no sense

1) we are to believe there are people working on Durango that don't know if it is always online or not
2) the author of the email, the one who knows that durango is not always online, sends a NDA sensitive email about Durango to a group of people not on the durang project.

I'm sorry, but like all the pro xbox720 rumors concerning always online, this does not pass the sniff test.

I don't truely believe durango will be always online, but I honestly believe all these "leaks" and "rumors" saying Durango is not always online are all hoaxes from fanboys that are butthurt from the initial Edge rumor.

Consumers won as one comment on ARS eloquently states.

Of course, the existence of such a mass e-mail implies that this is a recent change in policy. My work never sends an e-mail to everyone to say, "Just FYI, the policy we've had this whole time is still the policy. Keep doing what you've been doing."

Why need a press release to counteract a rumor made or interpreted incorrectly / intentionally by some insiders ?

Good news.

Although rumor probably should be put in the title

Is this a rumor? Yes. Is it a highly credible rumor from a trusted site, likely more trusted than the sites the previous rumors have come from? Probably. Is it still a rumor? Yes. Do we have anything but rumors? No.

Can we stop arguing whether or not this a rumor? Probably not. I just hope May 21st clarifies all this so people can stop wasting time and talk about the actual information.

Edit: I mean nothing against the quoted users. Just the continued fighting about whether this is a rumor or not.

How can a console be "Always online" if it isn't really required to be "always online".

There are a bazillion threads on this

Always online - low power mode, 24/7 download/patches/whatever
Online required - Console will not work at all without internet connection

Your phone (assuming you have a dataplan) and PC are always online, both will still work if you take them offline

Exactly. Them continuing with the status quo isn't worth praising.
I guess it's more of them staying resilient against anti-consumer yet successful practices, namely on he PC. I'm not sure if it was an imminent threat but there was a scare considering gamers at large proved they didn't give a fuck if something was always online; if they wanted the game, they'd get it.

Sony deserved a tiny bit of praise for not succumbing for that shit and MS do too if they don't either.

I'll be happy if this is true. Microsoft going so extremely down the path of all Games-As-A-Service would be bad for all.

Let's hope this is true.
