Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

Nice impressions, I can't wait for this! Will we get a dual audio track for SMT IV or just the English voice-over?

Given the amount of voice acting, I expect it'll be only in English.
It's possible that the demons in random encounters will still have Japanese voices though.

The only MegaTen games I've played are Persona 3 and Soul Hackers but this is the first game I've preordered since Scribblenauts because I love P3 and SH so much. These previews are great and the game looks bad ASS.

The story sounds totally amazing.

A bit of a shame; I hope the English VA will be great. I'm never bothered by stuff like that but there's quite a difference between the Japanese VA and the English one. I do realize it's just a teaser trailer and it doesn't have any of the main character's voices but it just feels less atmospheric.

I think the plan is to start donations for RK's run at the beginning of June, then start the Fiesta itself a couple of weeks later, just like last year. But there are a few hiccups.

Sounds good, gives me some breathing room to beat Soul Hackers and I'll be able to take an SMT IV break in between runs during the summer.

Though I bet they'll be another way too hard level check at the end of the game ala Strange Journey and I'll quit right before the end to do more Job Fiesta!

Going to be a great summer for grinding!

Great feature on SMT IV, from a Japanese network thing, but it's all in (hilariously narrated) English.

If you can get around that, there's some interviews with Masayuki Doi and Kazuyuki Yamai.

Sounded like a 4Kids narration. lol at some of the Bravely Default music that was playing.

Some interesting things from the video:

-They were working on the scenario/setting for 4 years.

-Yamai said they couldn't deliver a subpar product and it took them time to make the game a quality product.

-He also said they intended to go with Power Rangers-esque designs for the demons like Raphael, Asmodeus, etc.

-The localization team had trouble with translating the lines because they wanted to keep the nuances from the original Japanese script, so they worked with Atlus JP during the character design stage while they worked on the translation.

-Doi said he wanted to take a more anime approach to the designs to reach more people, and the blue and white outfits the characters wear were made with intention of communicating the characters to the player better.

-With the event scenes they added depth to make the world feel more realistic. They used CG instead of flat images for the backgrounds to achieve this.

-StreetPass can be used to create demon profile cards which can be created to let other people see your demons' stats, give them better stats, allow for special fusions, and can let you get special items.

-Fusion search lets you see which demon you can make and which skills and effects you can get before you fuse demons.

-They tried to make the game more accessible but without alienating fans. The one game journalist dude even noted that some of the older games you practically needed a guide for but for SMT IV so the extra things they added for accessibility helps in that regard.

-The fans in general seemed pretty positive.

Watching the video right now but it looks like this will be the first game I keep 3D on.

and yeah, these narrators/translators, jesus.

Dr. Hawking is now in the character section.

Been a while, chief.

He looks fine comparing he last iteration. Steven and Black Samurai are from past SMT titles.

So I wonder if there will be a cameo from SMT3? Demifiend maybe.

Right now I'm debating with myself to purchase a Japanese 3DS with this game. The Japanese 3DS will happen someday but the problem is I don't like the LL model and the pack is only with 3DS LL.

I'm still extremely worried regarding the game's direction though.

I've never played a mainline SMT before, only Persona 3 and Soul Hackers, but this looks totally badass.

This is the first game I've preordered since Scribblenauts so I'm totally stoked and glad I caught the Newegg deal.

Extremely worried? Why?

Extremely worried? Why?

- What I hated the most in Strange Journey is that the story started with your MC taking orders from his superiors and this game seems to start like that.
I much prefer starting alone like in the previous SMTs. I ended up loving SJ but the beginning of the story was a big facepalm moment for me.
- These big brawlers in battles. I hope it won't devaluate the same demons when fought in small numbers/individually.
- No random encounters
- The design in general which is now more anime-like
- Not having access to hard mode from the beginning
- The characters are voiced (which is cool) but with static portraits?
- The removal of the moon phase system
- Fusion system seems be have been simplified way too much.

I was going to add "Keneko where are you?" but I'm starting to accept that that guy will never design new demons for the series again and we will have to accept seeing his same old designs again and again, which is better than replacing them with sentai-like demons I guess.

I keep my expectations extremely low but this game is still my most wanted this year so I'm having trouble keeping that. Something inside me is telling me that everything will be all right but I'm still very worried.

I wouldn't be "extremely worried" about things that are nitpicky at best.

Also, I didn't know people cared about the moon system, lol.
