Skullgirls DLC Character vote | The Campaign united us, The Voting will destroy us

xQROnEt.png

Changed my votes around a little bit.

So I guess we all agree that the character that was both the most hated and the most loved was Annie, right?

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's Minette. While Annie might not be everyone's favorite character I think most will tolerate her.

There aren't that many divisive characters in the voting rounds other than Annie or Minette. I take back what I said about Beowulf, he's not that "controversial".

I'm surprised by the plush love. I consider them the lowest form of collectables.
I suppose if plushies were generally considered collectibles, you might be right. Figurines and statues are generally considered collectables, plushes not so much. I'm aware there's a third-party market for them, but they aren't really as big as stuff like Toylet.net or artbooks like Udon Entertainment (or if we're going to talk cards... Magic: The Gathering probably has a larger third-party market than any of the above by far).

I don't pick characters based on drawing in new people without taste. I pick characters I'd like to use.

I think that's a perfectly fine perspective to have. It's just that this is a "long haul" kind of situation and the only limiting factors for this IP are time and money. The "best" decisions, roster additions, etc. are the ones that get Lab Zero the most money/sales to allow them to make the most content and benefit the most number of people. This of course assumes said decisions don't constitute a "jump the shark" moment. At this point in time with the current state of the game, I'm not convinced Minette works towards that end. I could be wrong of course and obviously I'm not a fan of how she looks or is expected to play.

I finally made up my mind.

Sure, but I'm not Lab Zero.

The fact is, I sincerely doubt that Feng or Beowulf's inclusion is going to substantially change the number of people who buy this game. It won't. It may change the number of people who stick it for the "long haul", but those people can come back for Skullgirls 2 when they have characters who appeal to them more.

This poll is about Skullgirls fans voting for what they want to see in the game. I recognize the meta of voting for more universally inoffensive characters, but screw that. We donated to this project because we cared about the game. This vote is OUR reward, not someone else's.

I went with Beatrix as my number 1 again, because fuck yeah knife throwing and spatial manipulation cape.

I bumped up Ileum up to my number 2 because... I figure that these two don't have the greatest chances of surviving into the next round. Damn you. Yes, you, the one reading this. This is mostly all your personal fault. A thousand farts upon your house.

Dhalia is my third because I figure she has the best chance of going it all the way. Zoner or not, I think I'd like to see her in the game more than the rest (that aren't Beatrix and Ileum).

After that is Molly, because why not, and then the rest of the fellas with Beowulf at number 10.

I voted for an OVA, comic, and fight stick.

Tutorials, World Tour, and an "Other" recommendation that is probably impossible to implement.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Hey, man, don't look at me like that. We both have the same, noble cause.

I felt the same way Crocodile did at first until we got to the top four because I wanted people to enjoy the game. Now it's every man for himself after seeing that circus.

the only limiting factors for this IP

No! No! No! Game! It's a game! A world!

(deep breath)

If I linked this amazing piece on why we (gamers) need to stop referring to games as IP every time time someone said it, I'd probably be banned in a day. So I won't do that. But I'll link it here, where that soul-killing acronym is applied to this game.

Apologies, everyone does it, it drives me absolutely bonkers, and I just couldn't keep my mouth shut.

The widespread use of "IP" is one of the great victories of people adopting PR speak.

Another is the use of "DLC" over "micro transactions" which, as I understand it, wasn't very popular in marketing departments.

I still feel the same as Crcodile. Also for completely selfish reasons. I want more people to play the game so there is a wider group of people of varying skill online to play against. Simple.

Doesn't sound all that selfish or bad if you ask me.

I hope Beatrix makes it to the next round, but I doubt it. Chances are the top ten will be:

Annie
Minette
Feng
Venus
Aeon / Black Dahlia
Umbrella / Marie
Beowulf
Isaac
Panzerfaust
Stanley

I'd be surprised if even one is missing.

The non-character votes this round were pretty interesting. Artbooks and plushies all the way!

Even after getting my far and away most wanted newcomer, this feel is still there for me. Spite votes, votes for the sake of approaching some freely tossed and frequently changing sense of "normalcy" amongst the genre, and meta voting... To hell with that shit, I'm voting for what I like or have come to like even in the smallest manner. I want to feel good about what we did and the treat we got as a result.

Hell, I have goddamned D.Violet in my top 10. Clearly I don't give many fucks about anything anymore.

Let's not get started on adopted gaming lexicon that I wish never left the mouths of the people behind them. The hardcore/core/casual lines from the GCN/PS2/Xbox era that persist even now cause me to groan every time they're mentioned.

Also, I can dig your "selfish" reasoning there.

You Stanley fans better hope to your God(s) that Panzerfaust and Isaac concept sketches don't show up. Like I said before... ten out of the eleven characters with a video or concept collection have survived until now. Six of the top 8 from the last round now have to contend with these charged up characters. The battle for the top ten will be a bloody one. Thank God Eliza is out of the way or this would look like a certain elevator movie scene.
It is when I all want is rage messages from people drowing under Peacock's and Double beautiful synergetic bullshit.
Now it's not selfish, but evil instead.

Indeed

Eliza is far and away better than the other dark horse. :P

Just voted... After much thought, I changed things up a little:

1) Feng
2) Annie
3) Beowulf
4) Scythana
5) Molly
6) Venus
7) Minette
8) Ileum
9) Stanley
10) Isaac

As for merch, I went with artbook, figures, and fight stick.

...Now I just need to find time to actually play the game again. working 12 hour days doesn't leave much time for gaming...

That sounds about right, Neo. I'm dubious of Stanley's chances though.

Like Aeon, I'm not writing him off after the first vote. He made it to the top 8, he has a good chance of reappearing.

You Stanley fans better hope to your God(s) that Panzerfaust and Isaac concept sketches don't show up.

I don't think the majority of Stanley voters care about his gameplay concept so much as they care about him being a scientist shark with lasers.

3) Beowulf

I'm so disappointed :(

It's my way of relieveing stress after having to sit through dumb long combos and almost imperceptible resets into death.

"I didn't even get to play."

As someone who loves playing one of the de-facto most oppressive teams in Ultimate MVC3 even if it's not for outright combo video purposes (I love neutral with Viper more than unblockables into GGs, movement/spacing/pressure and neutral control with Dante, and high speed rapid sequence mixups into okizeme resets with Strider), let me just extend an apology towards you.

That being said, I really hope that the characters picked + the new DLC coming anyway + the original cast will allow me to reach the same level of enjoyment as my Marvel 3 team without the ever expanding list of bustedness coming from that game.

Edit: Why can't we have animated gif avatars anymore man...

Haha, don't apologize. I'm just as bad being the extreme on the other side of the spectrum. I'm all about, "Initiate Plan Gradius: Fling everything across the screen." I'd play MorriDoom if I could (fireball fly cancels are too much for my hands).

In fact, I want Peacock with Doom missles. Why? Because muahahahahahahahahaha

Every bit matters as we reach this top ten and I have a feeling that Stanley is weaker than the other guys who made top 8. He does have room since there are three free slots with Eliza gone.

Personally... if I could have four final concept collections to end things it would be Annie, Panzerfaust, Molly and Roxie. She could use the bump from some mech art.

I can respect that. The resets are okay with me though. The good thing about those "imperceptible" resets is that you can learn how to block them with enough practice and I can respect the work that goes into setting up an opponent. Long combos means you just gotta grit your teeth and "don't get hit" is the most nebulous advice ever.

This is what happens when you pot vote split. Don't vote split, kids.

:D

To be fair, the new system doesn't allow for much strategy in terms of voting choices; if you're only getting one vote the best thing to do is to give it to your favorite character... I mean, if your favorite character has no chance and gets eliminated then the vote is going to your second favorite so ultimately no "damage" is done.

I don't think ordering shit beyond the top 4 matters, tho.

Can anyone even think of a Fighter that got a "second lease at life" due to a single character addition? Or one that had widespread misconceptions / ideas changed by adding certain cast members?

The only characters that really seem like they'd "hurt" this game, are the ones that over-emphasise the negative aspects.

---

I really hope that if Minette wins, that she's properly used as a reflection of the best parts of this whole Indie GoGo situation: The fact that the community came together, and turned the fate of Lab Zero around, for a much longer time period than they initially expected.

Collecting tips, gaining confidence, and turning into a strong contender, all because of willing, helpful community support, from people of all races, backgrounds, nationalities, and walks of life... It'd just be the perfect trophy for the best aspects of this campaign.

Replace backup characters with Patron Saints, Mike Z eating a Zammich, Ravi Yagami, Little Innsmouth inhabitants, a Gigan, an Egret, Salty Umbrella (drinking a Hi-C?), and Ottomo's Pilot, for good measure ;)

I want Some beatrix and Beowulf art. I'd love to see what they can do with illusions and wrestling.

Compared to the last round, we now have a top 10 instead of a top 8. And because Eliza won the first vote and is no longer part of the contest that means we will see at least three new faces in round 3 this time.

While it will matter mostly in the top 4/5 this time because of the need for 50% of the votes, I still think ranking the characters is important. It gives a more accurate image of what characters fans want.

The only characters that really seem like they'd "hurt" this game, are the ones that over-emphasise the negative aspects.

That's true.

Knew I had to be missing something. Though (and we'll never know beforehand) I don't think being, say, fifth or lower is anything more than a consolation prize. If there's a cluster at the top, IRV has a chance to push someone over the top, but it's hard to see how it could propel someone from 9/10 to victory.

Right. The characters past top four probably only matter if you're contrarian by nature and your top 4 is full of characters that have no chance in hell of winning. :P

We're kind of past that with the top 20 here now though. Past who made it to top 8 previously I don't know what's going to happen. The next vote is going to be the most illuminating before Peter drops the bucketload of stats on us from both votes.

Intellectually, I know I just have to keep taking it until I can finally see what the reset is and then learn how to block it (and then after that learn the mixup for the different reset options the character has and try and guess correctly), but emotionally I think it fucking suuuuuucks lol. I wouldn't mind so much if I didn't have to sit through them for so long.

I have sloth reactions and sloth learning speeds.

Pretty much and most of those characters are glaringly obvious despite how interesting their gameplay sounds.
I want Some beatrix and Beowulf art. I'd love to see what they can do with illusions and wrestling.
I have an ultra clear image in my mind of the fighting style Beatrix would use and Mike confirmed that my suspicions weren't completely off. Beowulf isn't as over the top as the other characters in my mind so I'd like to see them more.

This is all useful data for future projects so it still has some use.

Now your name makes sense.

If I could vote I would vote for Annie and Beowulf.
Tee hee

I think if you buy a digital tier from Lab Zero's Humble Bundle store you can still get a vote as long as its done before a voting phase ends no? Can Ravidrath clear this up?

No! No! No! Game! It's a game! A world!

I'm not sure that article did a very clear job of explaining why using the term IP is bad but I'll stop if it bothers you. Sorry :(

"Don't get hit" is seriously my favorite line in terms of fast fighting game players giving advice. It's so dumb but when you experience everything else in a game like that, you can only come to the conclusion that it's the best advice you can give while being as vague as possible. :lol

Yeah, they've been adding Humble Bundlers to the list. That said, I don't believe they're going to add you mid way through a round, so you've got until Monday or so to buy in and have a say on the final vote.

1. Beowulf
2. Scythana
3. Venus
4. D. Violet
5. Beatrix
6. Brain Drain
7. Panzerfaust
8. Stanley
9. Adam
10. Isaac

Everyone else didn't really matter much.
I changed up my votes a bit!

1. Beatrix
2. Beowulf
3. Scythana
4. Venus
5. D. Violet
6. B. Dahlia
7. Brain Drain
8. Panzerfaust
9. Isaac
10. Taliesin

Beowulf, Scythana, and Venus are still my favorites, but Beatrix needs some love.
