Well Sony haven't exactly set the world alight with another Killzone and another Infamous. I don't care about either of those games if that's their launch. Drive Club might persuade me but Evolution's pedigree doesn't really fill me with confidence.

If MS come out swinging with a new Forza or PGR, though, I'd have to be there day one.
Agreed. Forza has been nothing but quality and having a shiny new one at launch would be amazing.

I know what you mean. I will only buy one system this year. The most powerfullest.
I just upgraded my PC last autumn. I can pretty much use it to shoot down incoming asteroids now.

I doubt the release windows of both machines will be very close to each other. At least here in EU. Which means I can buy both, at their respective launches.

What's the first game they show guys? I'm thinking it's Rare.

Does anyone else hope it's a huge disappointment so that they aren't tempted to buy two new systems this fall?
Nope. If this system is disappointing then i'm not getting any new system this fall. Who am I kidding, i'm getting the next Xbox regardless. :)

I'm thinking they show actual gameplay of thier exclusives or in general the games, and not just in engine footage. It was slightly annoying of Sony to show little gameplay IMO.

Please keep the fanboy stuff anyway from this thread. Let people enjoy their excitement.

How is it fanboy? More like concern for my wallet.

Last gen Xbox 360 was my primary system.

Basically I either want them to go all out and make an amazing system, or for it to be disappointing.

If it is middle of the road, then the decision gets much more difficult.

Yeah, that'd be great. They've had a few extra months, should be more viable for them.

Well considering the one that already went disappointed me enough that I'm getting a gaming laptop, I sure hope the 2nd one to reveal doesn't disappoint me as well. I'd hate to go console-less.

well sony show if i must say the truth already disappointed me.(i repeat this is my opinion)..off the shelf architecture that for someone mean "elegant" (in this case my pcs been in smoking from the 1980) no console at show...no motion control ..and a share button.......i hope ms do something really next gen...i mean NEXT GEN......we already have pc that can run games with ubermegatextures 10 times better than ps4/next box i want somethign that pc cant do...thats next gen for me

if they do..ill buy just xbox at start and ps 1 - 2 years later just to enjoy their exclusives

if ms dont

ill buy both in some years...but not in the first year

(i know that ill buy both already )

..ps. i know what u was trying to do man...my answer was sharp enough?

I wonder how they managed to prevent any leaks. It's pretty impressive tbh.
This is how they kept the Surface a secret:

Microsoft has a major manufacturing design setup in what it calls the Garage, full of 3D printers, injection moulding machines and computer-controlled laser cutters. But that's not where it worked on the designs for Surface because it's far too public. Instead, the design team initially worked in what Stevie Bathiche (pictured below), Microsoft's hardware maven, calls an underground bunker with no windows.

When the team outgrew that they moved above ground into a larger building; this one did have windows but it also had the kind of security you associate with bank vaults (or Microsoft's cloud data centres for services like Office 365, which have guards with guns and take biometric verification to get into).

Getting into the Surface building means going through airlock-style doors; the outer door has to close before you can get through the second door and go inside, so you know there's no-one sneaking in behind you.

This isn't related to the event (or it might be, though I expect more of this at BUILD), but I thought I should mention it here first and maybe later create a thread for it.

I've written about Microsoft's Xbox gTLD plans a bit before. It's really interesting stuff that could change very much regarding online. Here are some excerpts from the original filing (June 2012):

18(a). Describe the mission/purpose of your proposed gTLD.

The mission of Microsoft Corporation is to transform the way people work, play and communicate through the provision of software, services and hardware. Microsoft does business throughout the world, with offices in more than 100 countries and over 90,000 employees. Every day, billions of consumers and businesses work, play, and communicate using Microsoft software, services, and hardware.

Microsoft launched the original Xbox game console in 2001. It was succeeded by Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE, the online service for Xbox 360, which currently has 35 million members worldwide who cumulatively spend 2.1 billion hours a month on the service. Introduced in November 2010, Kinect for Xbox 360 set a Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling gaming peripheral by selling 8 million units in 60 days. The content and games enjoyed on the Xbox playform is generated by internal game and entertainment studios as well as third party game developers and entertainment partners. The bestselling Xbox games include Halo, Call of Duty, and Gears of War.

The missions of the .xbox registry are to lay the groundwork for providing consumers who interact with Microsoft through the .xbox registry with a more secure and authentic experience, to protect the Xbox brand, and to promote the Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and XBOX LIVE entertainment services.

We are assessing the opportunities that an .xbox gTLD has for the delivery of secure communications, products, and services.

18(b). How do you expect that your proposed gTLD will benefit registrants, Internet users, and others?

We expect that customers and users of our Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services will benefit if the .xbox gTLD registry allows us to lay the groundwork for providing a globally recognized and more secure platform to complement our on-going efforts to enhance the security, stability, and reliability of these consoles, devices, and services. We hope that the opportunity to provide our customers and users with an increased sense of security and authenticity for their interactions with the Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services has the potential to increase their confidence in and use of these consoles, devices, and services. We want our customers and users to connect, play, and communicate through a platform that they believe is secure and authentic. Depending on the extent of consumer recognition and acceptance of new gTLDs, it is conceivable that we could migrate our entire suite of Xbox LIVE entertainment services to the .xbox gTLD and use the .xbox gTLD to bring heightened gaming and lifestyle experiences to Xbox, Kinect, and Xbox LIVE users.

What is the goal of your proposed gTLD in terms of areas of speciality, service levels or reputation?

Tens of millions of customers use our Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services every month. The goal of the proposed .xbox registry is to lay the groundwork for providing customers who interact with Microsoft through the .xbox gTLD with an increased sense of security and authenticity, to protect the famous Xbox and Kinect brands, and to promote the Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services. Because the .xbox gTLD is the TLD counterpart to our famous Xbox brand and is a complement to our Kinect brand, the importance of maintaining and strengthening these brands dictates that we operate the .xbox gTLD registry to the highest service levels.

We anticipate that operation of the .xbox gTLD may provide us with the opportunity to use the gTLD as a globally recognized and more secure platform through which we can give our customers and users choice and flexibility and a familiar, easy-to-use interface through which we can continue to deliver to deliver amazing and innovative gaming and entertainment content and services.

What do you anticipate your proposed gTLD will add to the current space in terms of competition, differentiation or innovation?

Our proposed .xbox gTLD will add differentiation to the current space because it will be the only gTLD that has the potential to provide customers and users who interact with Microsoft through the .xbox gTLD with an increased sense of security and authenticity, to protect the famous Xbox and Kinect brands, and to promote the Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services. The tens of millions of online gaming fans demand platforms that are secure and stable and a gaming experience that is fast and realistic, capturing the imagination whatever the device that is being used – computer, television, tablet or telephone. We anticipate that our proposed .xbox gTLD will add competition to the current space to the extent it enables us to meet these demands of online gaming fans in a way that current gTLDs cannot. We anticipate that the opportunity to operate an .xbox gTLD has the potential to provide an authentic and secure platform through which we can continue our commitment to innovation.

What goals does your proposed gTLD have in terms of user experience?

The goals of the .xbox gTLD are to lay the groundwork for providing users who interact with Microsoft through the .xbox gTLD with an increased sense of security and authenticity for their gaming and entertainment experiences, to protect the Xbox and Kinect brands, and to promote to users the Xbox gaming and entertainment console, Kinect game system devices, and Xbox LIVE entertainment services.

I believe Microsoft should face no challenges in their pursuit to register this (and ten other) gTLD, so it's feasible that we could see it at launch or closely after. Exactly what their plans are can be found in the document though it means simply much higher control and security and new ways to interact with other players and services.

I don't know if this is interesting enough to warrant a thread, I'll let you decide. If anything, it could add more fuel to the "always on(line)" debate.

Depends on what they want to achieve with this event, I guess. MS is still going to have an E3 conference this year, won't they? It's kinda strange to have two events in a span of just two weeks.

What is this first event going to be like? Will it be a tease for the things to come at E3? Or are they going to show us their bullets? But if so, what will they show at E3 to make us excited?

I wonder if next week's event will be focused on the hardcore, while they're going to try to use the E3 as their way into the mainstream media with Kinect and services.

Most of what Sony shown was just talking though, and then there was that video of developers saying how good the PS4 is going to be. If Microsoft doesn't have too much of that there might be enough time for gameplay.

I expect MS to skip the in-depth Cerny technical discussion (which the nerd in me loved) and keep the event focused on games, services and entertainment. Compared to Sony's presentation it will be slick, lean and mean.

Yeah I mean nothing Sony showed was too crazy. But they did surprise me by revealing a more powerful system than we were expecting. I will say that it was the first time ever where I didn't come away disappointed by the tech specs for a new console reveal. All previous gens I have looked at the specs and thought they are too weak (as a long time PC gamer).

The ability to live stream your game to friends is pretty cool too. Otherwise, yeah they just showed a more powerful console. The good thing is that they focused on just providing a more powerful console that can play core gamer games.

I want to see games from MS, not Facebook/Netflix/TV integration stuff. I have no interest in that stuff. I have a media center PC that can do way more than any (non modded) system will ever do so for me those features are a waste of time.

I just hope they don't make XBL super expensive or reveal a console that is severely under-powered. Show me a powerful system with good games if you want to win me over MS.

There should be room for gameplay, but I guess they will also need some time to demo OS features, like multitasking for example, and of course NUI controls.
One hour is quite short, and a full gameplay demo could easily take 10-15 min.

Lot of the in-depth stuff will be saved for E3. I'm expecting broad overviews of system stuff especially.

A teaser, or the game?

I know a lot of people were impressed with Sony's showing, and I didn't think it was awful or anything, but god damn, not showing InFamous gameplay? Crazy talk.

Teaser.
