Since someone from Microsoft complained that Sony didn't show the console itself, what if they show a console, but then on the release they completely change the design shouldn't that be the same as Sony not showing the machine?

They are not going to do that. That would be absurd.

Does it really matter what it looks like they probably didn't finalize it back in February yet.
It matters to mainstream media and to (IIRC) 20% of GAF. At least that's what the thread where it was asked if people care about this concluded with.

...

Yes.

By that logic, if they said that their launch games would be better and then canceled them on launch day, they'd have a worse launch.

But WHY?

So we know a year ago that Rare was in the process of developing "AAA games."

Provided they didn't get canceled, and that at least one of them is set to be released at launch, what kind of game do you think we can expect?

PGR, Bloodwake, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo.

There was also chatter of them possibly working on a action adventure title, although that might have been /wishful thinking.

It's better to show software that's guaranteed to be releasing then say reveal a game and have it run into development issues. It's what happened to Sony with VS 13 and TLG.
No doubt about that. I think Sony learnt a little from that stuff. As bad as those two are, it's nothing compared to Agent. I think all the first parties have a responsibility to deliver anything they feature on their shows, regardless of if it's third party or not. I think MS's approach of showing titles that are closer, and multiplatform often, makes for a lot less exciting showing, but one much more worth of note. The last thing anyone wants is to see these events as wishful thinking on behalf of the platform holders. That's not to say MS and Nintendo haven't also had games fall through, but Sony have been the worst of the three on the issue.

Does anyone else hope it's a huge disappointment so that they aren't tempted to buy two new systems this fall?

Nope. If anything i am hoping E3 is a fucking slugfest with MS and Sony dropping megaton after megaton. I want E3 to be exciting agaim.
