Guys, you're paving the road to disappointmenton.

We know what's inside Durango, we know everything.

Yup we pretty much know all the inside of a Durango.

Microsoft backup for 360 was more of a "just in case" scenario if AMD and IBM could not pull through in time

But from that point on, I believed MS was going to aim for flexibility over exotic feature set.

Wait what? I just read it and thats not at all how it was explained. It was a full on feud that resulted in some people resigning when the decision was made.
Not saying that getting them BUILT wasn't a deciding factor but reducing it to, we had an entire division called "just in case" seems oddly dismissive. Especially as MS purchased an entire company based on the system that DIDN'T get made.

Of course it is just a book. So I guess there is that to take into context.

(talking about a subsidy model.)
Since Microsoft, or any other big corporation, uses the accrual method of accounting, there really wouldn't be a large "financial" hit in terms of their financial statement.

The only negative hit for Microsoft would be a drop in the cash flow statement and the creation of an allowance for subsidy/bad-debt.
Sales and therefore net income would still be recorded as usual.

Wasn't that Xbox 1? It was DirectX team vs WebTV

Xbox 360 was both teams merged together.

I remember reading in uncloaking the Xbox 360, they were fully prepared to go back to nvidia if AMD could not resolve the issues they were having... Same with IBM.

They were keeping options open

So MS doesn't have to take on the "debt" of each sale? I for some reason was told that they have to take on the complete debt. But as you say if its the accrual method than its less scary financially.

With how competitive Bill Gates is and I know he is not involved in much day to day activities over at MS, but I can easily see a GIF of him telling the MS Engineers that there is:

"No fucking way a console with my companies name on it is going to be inferior than what fucking Sony is going to offer...upgrade that mother fucker now!". lol

Both. Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 had companies purchased and resignations. So I guess...its the same both times. Defacto.

MS's dislike of Nvidia was so high they were looking into using other companies to create custom chips just to NOT use them. I guess if that also failed they might have gone back. They took such a massive bath that it was almost unfeasible to use them again. In the book someone described the deal as almost gangster like or something like that.

I love that idea. I love the idea of 2 competing groups in a company really trying to make the BEST thing. One of the great times at Sega as well.

Definitely need to read it again, that backup model was most definitely a just in case and it really wasn't that far along, it was something that mostly existed in concept only. This diagram was discovered in the beginning of 2004 like 2 months after IBM taped out Xenon to MS. It was clear by that time that MS had settled on their system specs and they spent the rest of the time working out the nuances and doing testing (because contrary to belief that shit takes months and months to do).

Ya I just read it and that's not at all how they described it or how MS did it in the past, or how it read. I am of course talking about the fact that they did have competing designs with competing groups.
But what are you saying about the diagram? That they had no others? EDIT: I guess we can all guess at what point the breaking point is now that I think about it. But its obvious they do have these competing groups and ideas up until some decision is made. Which was my point.

FYI I am not ascribing to a change nor am I ascribing to the leaked specs. Just so no one thinks its tech talk with any feeling behind it.

Came in for a leak...anyone?
Nada and the tent ain't saying shit:)

I always felt that Microsoft slacked towards the end of this gen on first party titles so they could come out of the gates strong again for the new Xbox.

Even though i don´t have a 360, i really love new reveals, and i am very exited for MS´s reveal. Especially since competition in the console business is good for us consumers. MS had a lot of forward thinking policies that benefited the gaming industry like revolutionizing online on consoles. I am exited to see what they will think of next. I am expecting the OS to be very intelligent and efficient and has a shit tonne of features.

Nah, we knew that.
Edge and a few others wrote that Sony was seriously considering doubling those 4GB GDDR5 several days before the event.

In fact PS4 unveiling perfectly confirmed EVERY rumor

There's also rumor that 720 will go with 12GB of ram, so should the latter be the defacto? The truth is 4GB of GDDR5 was the real deal, we can't throw 20 different rumors out there and randomly hit bits and pieces and claim we knew everything all along lol :p

http://majornelson.com/2013/05/16/xbox-delivers-for-core-gamers-with-machinima-and-more/

We roll out new entertainment experiences on Xbox LIVE on a weekly basis all over the globe, bringing you movies, television, sports and music week after week and offering something for everyone in the family. But this week, we’re going back to our roots and highlighting experiences for our core Xbox gamers.

We launched Machinima a few weeks ago—our first app to launch in all 41 Xbox LIVE markets—and the download rate has been overwhelming. In fact, after only two weeks on Xbox LIVE, it’s already one of the fastest adopted Xbox Live entertainment apps of the last 12 months.

Hint at next weeks event?

I almost did a back flip inside my car!!!

Indeed, we saw pretty much everything we knew already but in presentation form, the only things we hadn't seen were the videos for games etc. and some titles.

I expect the hardware will be what has leaked for Durango, we already had supposed leak of all the games that will be at launch which is likely what will be shown, and at this point I imagine we will see the OS and some its media applications. The only surprises I'm expecting are what the games will look like, just like we didn't know at the Sony event, and stuff from 3rd parties, like when Capcom showed Deep Down or whatever it was.

I don't really care at this point if the specs are "inferior" to the PS4, I'm going to end up with all the consoles again like I did this last generation, they are all going to end up looking great.

So MS doesn't have to take on the "debt" of each sale? I for some reason was told that they have to take on the complete debt. But as you say if its the accrual method than its less scary financially.

There is no "debt" here for Microsoft, cause that would imply a liability/obligation to transfer asset of economic value to someone. In a sub model, the obligation here is for you to pay them, not them to pay themselves. A liability would only exist for MS if say, Microsoft allows you to pre-pay for 2 year of live, then they'll be obligated to provide you with 2 years of live service.

So the customer takes on the "debt" here.
Microsoft will book the sale in the year of sale and accrue a receivable account.
Of course, they'll have to setup an allowance account for a % of people who will bail on their account (loss).

That and any other cost +fees in terms of keep track of these financing options.

So they make the systems...which costs money. Then they give them to people for less than they are worth...with a promise someone will pay them back. But they don't have to take that additional debt on in some way? Accounting....I suck.

Thanks allot for the answer. That stuff is so far above my head its insane.

Lol exactly, we can't round up every rumor and claim we knew all along... unless dual GPUs and 12GB is in fact true

Then best thing is that we NOW KNOW that the new system will both allow and block used games while also being online all the time and also not being online all the time. Oh I forgot to mention it has...three GFX cards including a PVR card as well as about 48 total gigs of memory.

Easy.

So I was wrong, it's not powered by petrol, it's powered by a singularity. Xbox Infinity... It all makes sense now.

Am I the only one that doesn't know what he's talking about? What are these roots they're returning to?

Well I took it to mean what is often called MS's original roots during system launches. Which have always been games.

I mean even video game publications use that terminology at times to describe what they want now, or back in the past when writing about how the 360 became successful by going to its gaming roots.

I could be wrong. Just how I read it.

how is that 14/4 CU split looking? DF's custom compute module?
